I once spoke to a FHP officer in Miami who was part of Roger’s security detail and asked him if Roger was as nice as he seems to be? The officer said he was without question the classiest person they had ever dealt with. Gave each one a personal gift at the end of the tournament, invited those who had kids to bring them in for pictures if they’d like, etc. It was really affirming to know that every now and then there is someone who achieves that level of success and still remains a decent human being! He will be greatly missed on tour!

That's the thing. Fed didn't need to be at his best to be the most stylish player the modern game has seen. He was always that, except on those days that he was _really_ off (which mostly happened as he turned 36-37). But at his best? He was tennis descended from above and made flesh on a court.

Agreed. Federer is a true artist, and one proof of this is that his technique is almost impossible to fully reproduce. That's because it's integrated to the point where it's not just a part of him - it is him. In a way, there is no technique any more - not in any separate sense. It's simply how his body expresses itself. That's what makes it so natural and so inviting to copy and yet so impossible to replicate.
The challenge Federer lays down to us, like all artists do, is how to find that level of integration in ourselves, whatever our art form is, and to find our own naturalness.
At his peak his level was the highest in my opinion, he would take a set off Nadal at French open quite easily at that level for example. Just sustaining it was the problem.

When these two gentlemen played that legendary 1980 Wimbledon final, I was 5 years old. Seeing them at their age now, and as they speak of a legend who belongs to a much younger era, but who’s also already retired… ah, time flies indeed.

I have been watching great tennis players like borg, macnroe, stefan, becker,sampras, nadal, dokovic. But my player is simply Roger. He is simply unparraral.
They were both amazing players and I still think Borg could have won more but his heart with travelling wasn't in it anymore,retired at 27

That was a ripper match. I watched a youtube clip where Bjorn explains how he went to the net during the match and just chatted with John to settle down, don't be so intense, don't be so angry enjoy the match. He really thought McEnroe's antics were funny. He took the piss as they say.
Federer was the best I've watched. Something about his finesse and grace combined with that massive forehand was just a thing of beauty. Love you Roger
No-one ever talks about Roy Emerson. Probably the best (at his peak) and the most class. Miles better then Borg.

He is a damn good commentator, so insightful, charasmatic, he'd be a hoot at a dinner party.
I still remember the way the British media used to crucify him and label him "Superbrat". Then one year he got pissed off and decided not to play Wimbledon. The result was the most boring tournament in years.
Seeing these guys together and longtime pals is great. Two legends of the sport, talking it up, just great.

I have seen them playing live in the 70s... it was amazing. Borg back then was simply unbelievable. He has had answer to everything and everybody.
John and Bjørn are so different characters and still both of their messages are sweet and beautiful and very much from the heart.
I know isn't that sweet how still kinda SHY is Borg. (Look at Bjorn at 26 no one hotter than him but better players.) I love Bjorn but watch some highlights of some of Rogers AMAZING rallies/ returns...like wow!!. He helped make the sport more electric as it seems each generation makes it better. Novak will be fighting at 50!! I believe it. They made each other better. Its a great time (HOWEVER SAD )for tennis! I do think the cool factor did START in the early 70s with TV coverage etc so I do tip my hat to the guys now grey..ox

@gpman6937 I feel that, too. One of Borg's most ndearing qualities was his calm and modest demeaner. He wasn't trying to be mobbed by girls or fans; HIS cool was 100% real, effortless, and eternal no matter how numan he is. He's a special one. There never been a player with his combination of traits before or since.
As a kid growing up I always thought Bjorn was the coolest, Roger is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, Class act, gracious and humble. Real pleasure to watch Bjorn dip his hat to Roger from one class act to another.

I watched the McEnroe and Borg match as a young kid, the tv only had 10 stations, but my babysitter gave me the context of the importance of the event (i think he translated from english), and I remember that 80s moment to this day. Life was a lot simpler then.

Roger has been my favorite athlete in any sport and at 64 years old I've seen a lot of them! He will be missed.
It's great to see Borg. He was one of my favorite players. Showing respect and celebrating Roger is great to see from two former champions.
Perhaps one day we'd get to see a grey haired Federer and a nearly bald Nadal get together on court and talk about some young prodigy in a similar fashion.

Same here.. I did watch the match, but only 1 set at a time after skipping so many times.
I think there will be many more chances to see him live. I think part of the reason he's retiring is so he remain at a super high level for the next decade, still good enough to challenge a top 10 player for a short stretch. He could try to come back for a shortened season but the strain of a tough match could completely ruin his knee and he wouldn't be able to play in retirement.

I'm old enough to remember these two great champions when they were at their best. To me, Bjorn was the early model for what Roger would later master. That smooth style of moving around the court. Never ruffled or hurried, no matter what his opponent was throwing at him. But Roger also could adopt some of McEnroe's game, and serve and volley his way to victory. Federer was like Fred Astaire or Michael Jackson, dancing across the court. Just a totally unique style, along with the ability to conduct. himself like a gentleman, win or lose. Something that even Johnny Mac learned to do over the years. Always thought that Borg would have been the first man to 20 grand Slam titles, if he hadn't burned out and retired at 26 years of age!! Back in the day....

A few words from Borg count for a lot, when he says " to be your friend" with such a tender expression beats a whole pile hyperbole from Mac. Borg never had to say much, in his pomp he was one of those extraordinary people that you could not take your eyes off. There's a famous photo of him surrounded by hundreds of people outside centre court staring at him in awe. That's a very very rare quality. Elvis had it, Ali had it, Steve MacQueen, but that kind of magnetism is given to a very few. Your body language is doing all the talking for you.

I think Borg could have been the GOAT if he hadn’t retired so early. To think he won five Wimbledon finals in a row is amazing. Certainly nobody better with a wooden racquet. He and Roger are probably my favorite of all time in the open era. They just got on with business on the court and were so ice cool.
McEnroe and Borg are living legends!! Sad but nice at the same time that Roger Federer has now moved into that group.
Legends will come and legends will go. But 1980 Wimbledon...the finals will, for me be the greatest tennis match I have ever witnessed between 2 colossus players. Sorry Roger. You are still great.
I feel that the way Roger plays tennis, and the zone he is able to get into is so rare. that he must be authentic in the rest of his life. Otherwise the Universe couldn't work for him in the way that it has. Words would never be adequate to explain the heights to which he has played the game for so many years. I watch him most days over the last 20 odd years, it helps my timing just to watch him. I love Pete Sampras and Roger Fed, and of course Rafa and Novak, as well as appreciating all the other ATP players. I don't think anyone will ever hit the ball like Roger though....Just surreal ....

I grew up absolutely idolizing these two guys. Bjorn was like a rock star who captivated the world even though he was so quiet on court and Mac was the complete opposite, a loud mothed, bad boy genius. Fire and Ice. The first two real superstars of tennis in my opinion, the Roger and Rafa of their day. Man does time fly.

For a fast court player who turned pro, played in the 90´s and was born with the serve & volley playing style, who learned and developed his skills in the ultrafast courts, playing against Agassi, Haas, Chang, Kuerten, Rafter, Ivanisevic, Rios, Safin, Kafelnikov, Sampras, then suddenly having to adjust to the slowing of all surfaces and bieng forced to play another kind of game from the baseline competing with the best grunters ralliers of all time in Djokovic and Nadal, and STILL WIN 20 MAJORS WITH A ONE HANDED BACKHAND? wow, that makes Roger Federer the Undisputed Greatest Player of all Time.
No other player under this conditions, will ever win 20 majors with a one handed backhand. Two handers have always a big advantage over a one hander in consistency, and with the todays raquet & string technology and also with this type of unified slow courts all over even more ...Its almost impossible in todays game (since 2005 more of less) for a one hander to be successfull ...
What Federer achieved is legendary. Beat Nadal 16 times with a One hander? including 4 Grand Slam Finals? Best of 5 with a One hander?
Beating Djokovic more than 20 times with a One hander? in slow surface conditions?

While we all have our favourite players, Roger's was the talent most of us wish we had. I don't know of any other player whose tennis playing has been called "beautiful" by another great of the game. Also, his behaviour on and off the field was beyond reproach. Tennis could not have wished for a better ambassador. He made watching tennis all the more compelling and I'm sure he not only made tennis fans watch more tennis, but like other sporting icons, Tiger and Jordan, he captivated even those that were only mildly interested in the sport - a true measure of greatness.

Borg basically invented the high topspin all-court game and Mac’s serve & volley looks so effortless but if you try to emulate what he does (and people have tried), you realize it’s all talent. Watching McEnroe/Borg/Conners made me want to play way back then. Short lived. Turns out I was much better at other, but still fun being beaten badly by my best friend and his little brother who just devoured this game.

Who can forget that memorable Wimbledon finals of 1980. One of the Greatest match in the history of Wimbledon. Talking about Roger Federer is like showing light to the sun. One of the greatest and elegant player of all times. Who can forget Rod Laver, winning 2 calendar grand slams in 1962 as an amateur and again in 1969 as a professional. Although he won 11 grand slams winning 2 calendar grand slams in modern era is is unthinkable. Hats off to you Sir. Two great players born within a space of 24 hours but in different eras, one on 8th August (RF) and the other on 9th August (RL).

I started playing tennis when these two were going at it. When you would watch them on TV you honestly could not tell who was going to beat who for each point. It was awesome tennis. Borg was my favorite because of his powerful baseline game and ball control. Plus he never ever lost his cool no matter what. And in those days Macs emotional game was surprising even shocking at times ! It's neat to see and hear him now so much more laid back ! Honestly back in 70s and 80s he was considered the "bad boy" of tennis due to his often explosive anger on the court. We didn't know what to make of him ! Now I really appreciate the insight he brings to the sport.
A lot of admiration for Roger from two of the greatest players of all time that I learnt so much from in my own game.

Mc Enroe resumes it well: most beautiful player, most beautiful tennis. And no, it's not only winning that makes you great. It's that, but all the rest next to it. And on that level, there's a gap with all the rest.

Every time I hear anyone giving Federer a tribute, I can't hold back the tears. I relate to everything they say even though I've never met him. Federer is a rare human being that is a people's superstar.
Listening to these two incredible and vocal players brings tears to my eyes. I grew up watching Rod, Stan, oh so many others. Rafa is my absolute hero as is Roger. Thank You Roger for ALL YOU DO AND WILL DO. Thank You John and Bjorn as well.

I was too young to watch Borg,Connors,Mcenroe and then Lendl duking it out but it's been amazing to watch this great era of Federer,Nadal,Djokovich truly fantastic and I agree with Mcenroe, Federer has been the most magical player to watch, an artist, you could imagine him playing any style in any era.
Always good to see them together, the greatest Tennis rivalry at the end of the 70s beginning 80s, great players, Bjoerns Fila kit including his red top is the most classic tennis wear of all times

when we talk about GOAT, we are not talking about numbers. There are more highlights in five minutes of Federer's video than the entire career of Djokovic, Nadal and Murray combined.
If you really don't think that Rafa & Novak have career "highlights," then you are clearly not a real tennis fan. You're just a biased Roger fan. As a Novak fan who was a Roger fan before that, I can conjure up memories of all 4 players that are simply magnificent. Maybe you should explain your definition of "GOAT," because you cannot leave out the numbers... 14 French Opens for Rafa, 9 Australian & 7 Wimbledons for Novak. Novak is undefeated on Centre Court Wimbledon for the last NINE years,, and undefeated against Roger in Wimbledon finals. They are ALL magnificent, so please - either go away and remain biased, or celebrate all of them. We will miss all 3 of them desperately when they are gone.

But yeah tennis is about endurance, not who hits more winners, most of the time... and that's become even more true on today's slow courts. @@prafulyadav661 Yes, it is. But we can he honest here, and I've said it numerous times already: fans of the other Big 3 have always had their guy down as the best, regardless of records. We have 10 years of online arguments as evidence.
Further, what does it mean to be the GOAT of a sport? If you're invested in that concept, I cannot think of any GOAT that is a pure churner of the best statistics. There are always intangibles, and those are what captures people's hearts and minds, because that is the only way you can be the GOAT of anything -- the emotions evoked are the most important factor. The GOAT is not an actual, measurable thing, because evolution and changing conditions means you cannot compare eras. So, for Federer, the intangibles are the way he has gone about winning as much as he has; the spectacle he has put on in achieving all that he has achieved. This has got to be the part of reason he was being anointed so early on, long before he even had double digit slams (I don't have a problem with anyone arguing that there were also murky agendas behind his marketing at the time). Nadal has his intangibles too, and if he ends up the slam leader, you might see a shift. Djokovic is the one who will lose out here, so he is the one who is most dependent on statistics (he knows this, of course). He already has most, so, if he ends up with the slam record, he will have to hope that his resume is enough for people to embrace him. If that doesn't happen, he will have to be content in the knowledge that he was better than his rivals, with the record books showing this.

He never played to lengthen the rallies and stay in them. He took the initiative always and went for the killer blow every chance he got. They literally slowed down every single court which worked against him and yet he got 20. Will never see a tennis player like the peak Roger Federer.
Tennis will NEVER be the same without Roger! I'm just sorry that I never had a chance to watch him in person.

As a massive fan of Rafa but also a fan of Federer. It truly saddens me to see Federer retire. He gave us all so many special memories and iconic moments. How special that him and rafa had a rivalry they had and on top of it they are both great guys and genuine friends. I truly hope we get to see him play next to Rafa for his finals match at the Laver Cup.
