Engine Compression Test vs Leak-Down Test: Why you need BOTH!

Ever wondered what the difference between a "Dynamic Compression" test vs a "Leak Down" test is? I'll demonstrate how to do a compression test and a leak-down on a 2006 Suzuki DR200. I'll show how the tests are different, but still complimentary to each other in diagnosing engine problems on any car, truck, or motorcycle engine.

Can you use the leakdown tester to read compression? The needle is stuck behind the needle stop on my compression tester.

No. The compression tester has a check valve, the leak-down tester doesn't. The pressure on the leak-down would just go up and down with the piston if you tried to crank it.

compression test: 126,150,150,150 psi. leak down test: 6%,6%,1%,1%. why does my leakdown test looks good but not compression test?

Great Question! It could be a cam/lifter issue, specifically on the intake side. The piston and valves are sealing well, but the engine isn't drawing in enough air to compress.

Also, if you have adjustable valve lash, check to make sure the valves are adjusted properly.
