    So I’m a cellist, I’ve been playing almost a decade. I own a cello that currently is worth around $10,000 and I really want a box cello. Totally honest. Let me know. 😂

      I have made a cardboard box "cello". It, however, does sound horrible.

      Good to see this sense of rationale reach traditional instruments, finally. The guitar world has been full of all kinds of marketing hoopla and snobbery for centuries up until now. Especially electrics where people would (and still do to a degree) argue over scientifically unproven and even debunked fluff designed to make luthiers rich.
      Sorry, no cello is really worth $10,000. People just think they are.

    • @OliverBatchelor
      @OliverBatchelor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@denizenofclownworld4853 Maybe! I'd say it's worth whatever value it brings to a person which could easily be $10,000! A guy I know made one and spent 400 hours doing so, that time is only $25 per hour - those things are pretty huge undertakings for a skilled craftsman to make.

    Nice flowing piece with a great little melody. I love that low Ostinato.
    It would be a great Kontakt instrument to layer. Nice playing also for bowing on a homemade instrument.

      Thanks! It took many takes to get it to a listenable state. About the Kontakt instrument: I spent all last weekend sampling it. Now I just need to chop up my samples and make it into a library. (So far I've just sampled sustained long notes, but I plan to do ostinato next.)

    This is actually mind-blowing. I can't believe that sound is coming from a box? So all violins and violas and cellos and basses and guitars could just be rectangular and it wouldn't make thaaaat much difference.

    Incredible. Reminds me of cigar box guitars. This is resourceful and beautiful. If you sample it I wonder if you will try to recreate the "realism" of it or go for something otherworldly. It would be so funny to spend 100+ hours recording legato transitions for these instruments but at the same time a great experiment and learning process. Very curious what you think of sampling in this context.

    • @DavidHilowitzMusic
      @DavidHilowitzMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! So far, I've decided to stick to regular "sustain" samples (as well as spiccato and pizzicato) and not worry about legato. It just seems too crazy for such a bizarre niche instrument. :)

    There is a simple scientific reason why David Hilowitz is able to create surprisingly good sound out of this cheaply made box cello. The fact is that a simple rectangular box with the correct proportion is the most efficient resonating chamber possible. It beats the curvy shape of the traditional violin family of instruments easily despite its "ugly" look.
