    When the owner says that the temperature gauge goes way up even before the engine starts, it seemed odd that somebody changed the thermostat when it seems obvious that the gauge is showing an incorrect temperature.

    I had a GM the other day that had 42 codes set in OEM specific. There were voltage high and low codes for nearly every sensor under the hood. They wouldn't clear. However Global show no codes at all. Replaced the computer and that went away, but I had a bad crank sensor and cam sensor. No way to know that till I got the computer to stop flipping out on me though.

    Used to rebuild my own starters, but now that I'm 67 I find I value my time more, especially when the parts are hard to get. Last year the GM starter on my wife's car developed an intermittent no crank. Electrical feed was OK. The pinion gear end shaft had worn through the bushing right into the housing so I was really glad I got a new one before I tore it out. Harder removal than in this video. The old starter never made noise, just the intermittent no crank.

    Have you ever seen substituted voltage values? I can see how it would substitute an interpretation, but substituting an actual voltage value would be another step toward confusing diagnostics.... In any case, it is too bad there isn't a flag to identify when a value is substituted.

    • @acarlX
      @acarlX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      All the sensors on a vehicle with electronic engine management generate an analog signal (varying voltage). At the PCM (powertrain control module) the analog signal is converted to a digital value. Then logic within the PCM analyzes this digital value and determines if it makes sense when compared to other values (oil temperature, intake air temperature). If it does not then a value is substituted. So there would be no reason for the engine management logic to substitue a value for the analog signal. Just substitue on the converted value; analog to digital. And as Eric O has indicated a substituted value parameter is used to keep the engine running (if possible) and not leave the vehicle stranded and non-operational.

    Looks like the other shop just chose the first thing on the list. How did a technician think a bad thermostat would cause a gauge to read high temp when the motor was dead cold. I'm no tech, but as soon as Eric said the temp gauge goes up when the car is cold, my mind said temp sensor. Not having a bunch of fancy scanners, I would have just unplugged the sensor and looked to see if the gauge went back to zero.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately because the temp gage is networked it likely won't read cold unplugged due to the open circuit. In most cases the gage will indicate an overheat condition as that would get your attention.

      Agreed, looks like someone pulled the codes, checked the service data, saw the first thing on the list that was a replacement part ( I think it was listed as the second possible fault), slapped it in, and called it done.
      Some of the stuff Eric gets from "The Other Shop" is a bit of a tougher diagnosis but this was a bit pathetic. I mean if you're going to load up the parts cannon, with the faults described temp sensor should have been the first option!

    In VW/Audis this sensor is a dual one, measures twice the same coolant temp, one signal goes to dashpod and maybe ac and the other goes to ecm. Commonly one circuit breaks and drives mechanics and DIYers crazy, common failure for diagnosing cooling issues on a perfectly running engine.

    I dislike substituted values too. Can be hard to distinguish between what’s real and what a computer making stuff up. Usually end up doing like you and second guessing things. So, end up looking for other values or checking things in a different way to see what makes sense.
    And, at least with a lot of medium/heavy duty stuff there will be multiple things labeled as something similar on the data stream. Usually just ignore the ones that are wild unless there’s a code for them. I think it’s stuff that’s optional or just making room for possible future stuff in the programming.

    Excellent vid. I just went thru this with a 2017 Buick LaCrosse 3.6. Codes for t stat, fans come on and stay on, temp gauge bottomed out on C. Shop already put in a stat. OE scan data from the OTC showed 158* live data. Unplug the ETC and it showed -40. Jump the harness, and it showed 158*.. In generic, same scanner, it showed 240*, harness NOT jumped. The ETC had failed, and the t stat code was because the fans were always running on med speed, it couldn't warm up correctly. New ETC, clear codes, and then the gauge worked, no fans until 207*. I will say that I don't understand why the gauge showed C instead of H, but whatever.

  • @davidhoman3807

    Just a fun-fact for the day FYI, -40 F just happens to equal -40 C. That’s the only temps using those two temp scales that are the same.
    212 F = 100 C
    32 F = 0 C
    -40 F = -40 C

    hello Eric, let me explain what I have in mind regarding the minute (9:49) of this this video of yours and I don't know if I'm right. 1-. ($7E8 HEX is equal to 2024 decimal) this is the current temperature of the vehicle under scanning (228.2 ºF) 2-. so ($7E9 is 2025 decimal) 429ºF is the high side of the scale used by the CPU (and $06 mode) and the low side of the scale is (-40.00 ºF) In fact you can see this value on the scanner, inside the parentheses on the right site of the scanner screen, minute 9:49 this is the complete scale. Also, computers communicate by (HEX and 1's and 0’s) I repeat, I don't know if I'm okay. Greetings from Tijuana B.C, 🇲🇽 Mexico.

    Seems that there are several checks that get fired before the ECM decides to show the real value. Like they decided to show a hardcoded value mid way their decision tree, not kosher. It might be showing what a mess of spaghetti code they have burned in their ECMs

    So do the OEM scan tools offer a generic mode? If not, that may at least partially explain why dealerships seem so bad at fixing cars ;)

      Some do yes. The older Chrysler scan tool does. The DRB III. Awesome tool.

    Have you heard anything about Chrysler 2018 and newer having to have a subsciption to read ecm/pcm information? My S-O dealer was telling me that you needed a $50 a year fee and scan tool needed wifi to work on them?

      Yes with a security gateway module you have to sign up on Auto Auth webapp.autoauth.com/ or if you are using WiTech you have to sign into tech authority first

    Well, maybe jeep is using the Kelvin scale for temp. 419 Kelvin = 294.4°F or 149°C.
