    This is the first session for this little Unreal 4 Lighting community thing :) Sadly, it became so long that I had to split up the first part, so more will follow soon!
    Very big thanks go to Saralie Wågström who was so kind to provide me with this great environment of hers. You can check her Artstation here: www.artstation.com/artist/sar...

    This series is perfect! It goes over everything that I've been fumbling around trying to figure out on my own. This is so incredibly insightful and knowledge packed; Thank you so much for these, I'm excited to start my next scene and really start applying all of this great information. Thank you again!

    First time i enjoy a youtube video this much. You completely took my attention within the first minutes with your analysis of the digital paintings, and for that i thank you. Eager to continue watching your videos. And must say your approach is completely real and human, most videos out there had already everything figured out and think thats whats important but the important stuff is to deal with problems and the approach to solve them and to see that even masters like yourself can encounter certain problems.
    Thank you and keep up cause you are doing an amazing job.

    Hey, this series is awesome! I learned so much just sitting back and watching you fiddle with this, that and everything but the kitchen sink! If there are more videos, I'll watch them no matter the length! Cheers!

    I've got a lot of new knowledge about scene creation from this lesson. Thank you so much for the proper lighting techniques, the useful features that UE4 provides us and the advice for what we shouldn't do. And even though I'm not a native English speaker, I understood almost everything he explained. The explanation is slow and detailed. I'll keep subscribing this channel and watching next videos.

    Excellent! I'm a Maya Lighting Artist and was looking for tutorials for Unreal 4 and this is just great. Some of the concepts explained in this series have even cleared some of the doubts I had while working in Maya. Thanks for the video.

    This is a really fantastic video. Very well presented with great info. People complaining about 'the theory' being too long should really stick to the 'click this, click that' tutorials for beginners. It's a shame that people are so impatient when watching tutorials. Unfortunately, they are missing out as this is packed with knowledge.
    On my own channel I have a similar approach to yours where I always try to delve into the WHY we do what we do in 3D/CG as it is so much more valuable than mindless button-clicking and hand-holding. At first I was worried that I'd bore people with my constant explanations and preamble but, 11K subs later I find that a lot of folk are enjoying the format. To my mind, it's a lot more valuable to take in as much information as can be had. No matter how long we're doing this stuff there's always more to learn. :)
    So keep up the excellent work. Pro workflow vids like this, on TH-cam, are all too rare. I came for the UE....got comfy with the Stahlenhag.....stayed for the thought-provoking demo. Look forward to more from you.
    Cheers mate.

    I love the content and approach! At first, I was skeptical of your "not going to prepare ahead of time" philosophy, but you quickly won me over as I saw you encounter case after case where you had to deconstruct, explore, and improvise solutions. I learned a ton. I was also worried about the length, but honestly, I got sucked in and had watched the whole thing before I knew it! Watching it at 1.5x speed helped. ;)

      Thank you very much! Great to see that this approach is valued as I wasnt sure in the beginning as well :D It feels a bit off at first, but I strongly believe that problem solving is a vital part of this so it would be even more weird to just leave it out of the equasion^^

    I'm a french student in programming at a video game school, and I don't have any sort of technical knowledge in lighting, and in art in general. But your video is so captivating ! It's so interesting, so thanks a lot for doing this ! Really, it's awesome !
    Would it be possible to enable the community to create the subtitle for these videos ? I really want to ad french subtitle, because I think it's just an amazing serie that french people (and averyone in general) need to watch (for those who don't understand english).
    Thanks again !

    Hi. Thanks for great video. I have question. When you disabled global illumination in post process menu you said it only affects static lighting there is no effect on dynamic lighting. Is this same on LPV enabled scenes too? May be I am wrong but I think it effects to dynamic lighting GI too when you enabled LPV. But again may be I am wrong. :/ Began just now but first minutes of your first video is already very interesting.

    Can you elaborate some more on dynamic vs static lighting? You seem to advocate dynamic lighting, what factors determine either or? Also, does dynamic lighting not require lightmap UVs and baking lights in UE4?

    • @51Daedalus
      @51Daedalus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! Sure. So I am actually explaining why I went for dynamic lighting in the video. The scene I am working on is not mine and in general, I try to stay true to what was imagined by the artist that sent me the scene. So this scene was set up with dynamic lighting to begin with.
      However, personally, I do prefer static lighting since the quality is so much higher and results can get more photoreal when NOT building natural environments. Overall, I decide like this: is it a lush nature scene with hundrets of vegetation assets = dynamic lighting. Is it more of a man made scene or something like that with a bit of vegetation = static lighting. There are also ways to combine the two to a certan degree...but there is not a 100% rule and it all depends on the context of the scene. Oh and for dynamic lighting, you never need to author lightmaps or bake anything! Hope this helps! :)

    • @51Daedalus

      Actually, you are wrong in this case^^ I am German so I have a german Windows (Windows 7 btw^^) and Photoshop CC2015 was installed in German as most of my programs. I later changed the language to English because I am used to work in english software from work but when I updated PS to CC2017 it set it back to German again ;) So yeah, I have already switched the new version back to English again so I am fine ;)

    Okay so I'm watching through the video and I have some feedback. The video is simply way too long. Talking about concepts and stuff for the first 30 minutes will scare some people away. I think you'd benefit more by having a separate videos where you talk about theory and things to look for. Like when you used photoshop to check the brightness level. That was something new and extremely useful. But most people will skip through those 30 minutes to see you work on the scene. Also I loved the fact that you set all the options to default. That will be really helpful for people trying to learn

      Hmm, I actually enjoyed the whole thing. Most of the time tutorials are super focused but I liked how you share your thoughts on small stuff. As a level designer who's been struggling with lighting for years I'm learning heaps.
      So I guess it's up to the viewer. My thoughts is that the more information the better. Instead I would suggest maybe cutting the videos into shorter segments perhaps, that way your videos are easier to browse through without sacrificing the amount of information you share.
      I certainly am incredibly thankful for your efforts !!!

    • @AlecChalmers
      @AlecChalmers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Josue Magallanes I gotta disagree. I wanna hear everything anyone has to say about lighting, there's just simply not enough discussion about on of the most important aspects of modern graphics. There are already a ton of videos explaining how to stick a light in your scene and then they just end. We absolutely need more lighting content.

      They are saying that the two images give very different results, with the scene on the left making the light more noticeable, and the scene on the right limiting the visibility of the light to only the starkest changes. Also the note says that the average in the first image of ~.7 represents about 50% lit in sRGB.
