I like the way you work, I've seen the techniques you use and I fully understand why you do it, I've been roofing for 10 years and I can't deny that your work is great.
I am glad to help. Just remember it is Karnak 81 or 66 Trowel Grade. Home Depot only sell the Brush Grade unfortunately. If you try Beacon Building Supply or ABC Building Supply in your area, they might have the product. Cheers
@@FlatRoofDoctor what about Karnak 19? We typically use that and only apply it with a trowel, but it doesn’t specifically state trowel grade. No way that stuff can be brushed on
Thanks for video. I have a flat roof carport in florida I roofed with Torch down from Lowe's 13 years ago. However it came loose from the drip edge just like you were saying in one of your videos. I will definitely be using your technique when I redo it this Winter. Thanks again.
wow, I did not know you were in South Africa. I am from close to the Kruger National Park. Lived in Jo-burg fir awhile then moved here in 1986. Are you a Rooinek? I am an original Boer Seun, or Rock Spider as they used to call me. Anyway, it is always nice to hear from you. Take care
Doc best you just ignore the annoyers….you are doing everyone a favor by spending time filming and training….I was in business for almost forty years residential and commercial roofing installing shingles, epdm, Duradek and standing seam metal… I watch your channel cuz u do mod bit….. you are professional grade ……..
This is some real hack stuff. First of all I would of ripped the whole roof. Your whole new roof is relying on peel and stick. You have a leak and it goes under that peel and stick, first wind storm its blowing right off. It's called using asphalt primer. I see you've never done warranty work. If a manufacturer seen us put down some roofer in a can as a permanent roof. They would make us rip the whole roof off again. For very good reason....it doesn't last. It's a temporary solution.
Hello, thank you for showing us how to do all of this. I plan t do the Modified Bitumen Torch over tar and gravel next summer; the one item I am unsure about is how to terminate over the edge of a stucco parapet. There is no metal drip edge, what is the best way to seal the edge of the two layers on top of the stucco parapet? Thank you in advance for your guidance.
100% agree 👍 it's safer in that there's less chance of walking off the edge of the roof, some roofers won't walk on the felt in case they leave foot prints, but if the correct heat is used no footprints will accure.
thank you for your videos , my flat roof is same material as you showed. its old and i m thinking of replace so i can search around in my area to purchase , i m in North Carolina .
For those who have homeowners insurance you will not get paid out once insurance finds out you did it yourself, lol. You might even get dropped from coverage. Get a certified roofer for your insured house. And if it's some bullshit structure do it yourself
Some different techniques to how we do it here in the UK but if it works it works, I guess. The quality of your mineral felt looks great. I do hate having to use crappy torch on felt. Wouldn’t it be great if every job was a four sided free standing building? In the pub by lunchtime.
Why not use tpo, or ib with a weldable drip edge? Just curious to what you think I personally feel a heat welded rubber materials are best for these applications
Just started roofing. I had to cut a bunch base and cap for edgework. They gave me a hook blade and asked for straight lines. Was tough, wondering if there is a trick to cutting this stuff. Im seeing many people just using exacto knives, might ask to try that out instead tomorrow
Is that a torch down product? It looks just like rolled asphalt that i am familiar with. The torch down rolled roofing i am familiar with look.nothing like rolled asphalt. He is barely torching his product. Anyone know what it is?
Probably answering my own question on a epdm/fiberboard/pea gravel flat roof and the fiberboard has gotten saturated and the hold downs have rusted and backed off in places. Short term fix is to use the Super Silicone seal/polyester before the next storm on every gap and tear. Other than replacing all the EPDM and fiberboard (and re-establishing some more slope with pea gravel) anything else that can be done long term?
I'd fire any roofer who shows up with "roofing in can" never in my 20 years on any surface had I broke out a can to roof...proper cleaning of the metal and primer..done...or this case the edge cleaned and stripped with epdm..easy enough and completely doable. Call me old fashioned and maybe I was no I know taught differently but never roofing goop out a can..effort..elbow grease
The so called plastic, as he calls it is just a small film that comes as its being produced . no need to pull it off. It is so thing it melts away with the heat you apply.
Ok I was just watching this video --- (4030) U.S. PLY How to - Torch Application Techniques - TH-cam , and he says the temperature needs to be be above 45 degrees F. And you are making it work at 28 degrees F. So you are using a different product, or more likely you just know how to make it work at colder temperatures. I was about to give up since winter is fast approaching but now I might be able to do a torch down roof in cold weather since you can do it. There is a Roofing Supply not too far from me. So do I just tell them what I am putting down and see what they have in stock? Can I just use the nail down base compatible with the Modified Bitumen and then the Modified Bitumen cap sheet? Or would it be better to use a 2 layer system. Of course the middle layer would have no granules on it. I think you said Magnum torches and Raptor Express torch for details. You could be an Amazon seller and make some money.
If your using torch on you can torch below 0c no idea what that is in Fahrenheit. Use a 3mm underlay and a 4.5 cap sheet but don’t lap them like he did in this video use a full sheet underlay and cut a roll of cap sheet down the middle to separate lap on lap
Omg there are so many mistakes here. Peel and stick over Epdm? Remove the flashings and install board over the existing roof. Seam over seam. Heating up the tank yes we all do it but osha would have a heart attack watching that. You don’t even know how to properly go up a ladder.
Or make more work for me, for no extra cost. The existing metal was not completely clean, and to remove the EPDM, Clean it with Lacquer Thinners, is way more time consuming, that in turn will cost the customer more.
you can say that youve been doing this for 35 years but that doesnt make it right, it just means you have been doing it wrong for a lot longer than you should have
There's no problem walking on the felt as you burn in fact it's a sign of of good roofer who's confident he's not over heating the felt and leaving foot prints.
In Canada you have to melt both the sub and top layer together. You americans can walk on it because you are barrely sticking them together, while we make them FUSED. We have very good construction standards compared to you.
I like the way you work, I've seen the techniques you use and I fully understand why you do it, I've been roofing for 10 years and I can't deny that your work is great.

Blessings to you and your wife. Love your video's. So nice of you to help people.
Appreciate everything to do and teach. Like the trowel grade in the scupper technique. I’ll be using that in the future

Great technique, I'm learning with every video. Torch down is a bit on the expensive side here in South Africa.

Your joints are running against the water. Your supposed to start at the lowest point (scupper) working outwards
Nothing like bucking water trying to get to the scupper box. Not to mention Karnak is not an adhesive.

Keep doing it, The way you have been doing it.

Yes many Canadians would laugh you off the roof we call you hacks
Here in the states that's exactly the word. A hack.
Not everyone can afford a full tear off and new roof.
10:30 never leak 😂😂see you next year
No fire extinguisher or fire tape?
I have a flat roof over my porch with EPDM, would it be best if I put a new EPDM over it or would peel and stick be better?
turned out nice....nice job
Everytime you make a mistake your answer is always but it's okay if you cut the laps to short cut them longer that's amateur mistakes

You are very Thorough. I wish I could hire/Have your service in Philadelphia PA
I will be in Philadelphia next week to look at a job. You could contact me if you want 203 858 0080
Another informative video…. Hey doc what’s the difference between Karnak 81 and 66… thnx
the 66 has a lower viscosity but works just as well
Great to see im a torch on roofer in uk i use roll bar and walk on it, its quicker and safer

@@neilkennykenny4113 you know it man , gotta get up early to go home early
Would you not of done the water outlet first and not put your laps against the fall ?
Sorry to be what they call a hater, but this guy needs to retire.

28° is to cold to do torch down. Manufacture says at least 40°. You have to heat it up so much you destroy the integraty of the matirials.
That's bullshif , I live in Ottawa we torch year round

Hook knifes are better , you can try and use something called a T- square . Or try to scribe a line with a tape measure
There is a thing they call a tape measure and another they call a chalk line. And allways use a hook blade.
Is that a torch down product? It looks just like rolled asphalt that i am familiar with. The torch down rolled roofing i am familiar with look.nothing like rolled asphalt. He is barely torching his product. Anyone know what it is?
It's a peel and stick base sheet. But when that roof needs to be replaced good luck getting it off.
Hey forget about to roofing safety first and get that ladder set up
Properly 3 rings above the roof line and tied off .
Where did you guys get the the rolls from? I can’t find any
I.think that is easy to find rolled asphalt that is sold home depot? I think
Very good
How bad can roofing go.
In this vid, it looks like it can go pretty bad.😂😂

ok
Yeah but isn't this guy fixing the roof the way you do it?
There is one type of roofing were it is used on top of the base sheet around penetration's. That is hot tar roofs. Never with torch down.
I didn't quite get this one. If this was peel and stick why was there some plastic that had to be burned off? Didn't the plastic get peeled off?
The peel and stick was the underpayment that was put down first then the torch down was put on top
@@valeriehamilton8918 Thanks you do an amazing job. Yeah I know my question was dumb after watching this again.

If you want your roof done properly, you should fire this roofer. Awful work. Ever heard of bleed out lol

Plane and simple, you don't do Torch Down like that. Hack job.
