  • We perform our official InsideEVs 70 MPH highway range test on the 2022 Kia EV6 GT Line AWD.
    Equipped with a 77.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack, the EPA rates this version of the EV6 at 274 miles. Our test car with its larger 20-inch wheels would fall shy of that marker. Watch the full video to see how far our editor Tom Moloughney went on the highway.

    I have EV6 RWD, heatpump, and 19” wheels. Currently getting around 300 miles on a motorway run in UK summer temps, driving in normal mode with ac. About 350 miles around town.

    I drove 175 highway miles today. Set cruise control at 70 mph and mostly drafted 18 wheelers so more like a 65 mph. Little wind and 90 degrees and no rain. I have a RWD Wind. Averaged 4.4 miles per kWh resulting in 340 miles of extrapolated range. Eco mode. Very happy and the best highway results so far. I really think the drafting of the 18 wheelers is what did it.

    The 20 inche wheels are standard on the GT Line AWD. All other models have 19s. Very good video. I love that I can compare this range to other cars that you test in the warm. And since the EPA tests are done at a lower speed, this car performed well.

    love my EV6's. i am lucky enough to have a Wind w/tech package and a GT line. the Wind is definitely more efficient. 230 miles is about max for me in the GT, but i can get 250 plus in the Wind. And they sure do get looks on the road.

    Not enough range for me. I drove 240 miles for work yesterday and that is not unusual. Rural areas lack the charger support. I’m going to wait to buy an EV until cars like this get to at least 400 miles. Not to mention the ridiculous markup over MSRP that my local dealer is charging($6000)

    I love my EV6 Light (58 kWh) RWD. At 70 mph I get about 189 miles (or 3.5 mi/kWh) of range. In practice I rarely make hops between chargers longer than 150 miles if I can help it. If cruising on our fine interstate system and EA stations are spaced out 90-130 miles as is the case in and around the Midwest, Northeast and Mid South where I drive, it’s a joy to cruise comfortably with traffic (wink wink), arrive at 10% SOC and quickly charge to 60-80% SOC depending on what the car and ABRP think I’ll need in order to jump to the next stop an hour and a half down the road.

    Hey Tom - great range test, as always, fella...!
    Lovin' your work.
    Yes, I'm not surprised the Model Y owner was ogling the EV6 - it's a storming success here in the UK.
    It's just odd, in my opinion, that this purpose-built, ground-up EGMP platform only puts out 'mediocre' miles/kWh figures - compared, for example, to the old, multi-drivetrain Kia E-Niro for example, which would regularly see late 4's / early 5's for miles/kWh...??? 🤔

Those cars have mono-color interiors, a stick-on plastic "First Edition" badge on the center console, come in three unique exterior colors, and have the same exterior styling as the Wind. @anthonyc8499 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With 200+ miles of freeway range available with 80% battery, it'd be really easy to skip-stop EA chargers on a fast road trip instead of needing to charger-hop like a lot of slower charging EVs need to do.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyc8499 Definitely. When I ran the EV6 through a 1000 km test, I only had to stop to charge three times for about an hour total. With better spacing and charger availability, I might have been able to do it with only two stops, but there was no way I was stopping at Harris Ranch on Memorial Day weekend. That place is a zoo on a regular weekend.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyc8499 Also, just to be clear, charger hopping is more of a faster charging EV issue. In particular, Teslas have this issue because of how pronounced their charging taper is. Something like a Model 3/Y will peak at a higher charging rate than the EV6 from 5% to maybe 30% battery, but the EV6 maintains a much higher rate from 30% all the way to 80% and beyond.
      Slower charging EVs tend to have flatter charging profiles, and for those that do taper (like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Chevy Bolt EV, and KIA Niro EV), the difference between charging speeds at 50% versus 70% don't warrant ending the session early and jumping to another charger.
      That's why, despite having a much longer range on paper and a much faster charging curve, a Tesla Model 3 LR's typical charging legs will be a similar distance to the Bolt EV (about 120 to 140 miles between DCFC stops).

    • @anthonyc8499
      @anthonyc8499 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@newscoulomb3705 the E-GMP platform has so much range and charges so fast that there is little drawback from pushing the speed limit. In my MME GT, I get 90-100 miles of 70mph range in twenty minutes of charging but the EV6/HI5 easily doubles that distance so it doesn’t hurt to go a bit faster.
      In practical terms, the Mach-E’s slower charging makes near zero difference for distances of 300 miles or less. However, every subsequent charging stop will give a twenty minutes advantage to the EV6/HI5.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyc8499 Sure, but after driving the EV6 700 miles in a day, I can say that it might actually charge too quickly. The only number that really matters is how much additional time you spent stopped and charging that you wouldn't have spent stopped otherwise.
      With a typical gas car, we know that is 5 to 10 minutes for 600 miles because you have to stop to fuel once and can't do anything else while you're filling up.
      With an EV, as long as those charging stops align with something you'd be doing otherwise (bathroom, meal, etc.), you're essentially wasting no time at all (i.e., sunk cost).
      The Mach-E is about perfect for most drivers, in my experience. Somewhere in 8 to 10 hours of driving, people typically want to fit in a meal break of at least 30 to 45 minutes. That means two 15-minute bathroom breaks gets you the remaining range you need to complete a 500 to 600 mile drive in the Mach-E.
      TheEV6 is better for drivers who eat in their car while driving and only take 10 to 15 minute stops a few times during an 8 to 10 hour day of driving. Frankly, I just don't think that appeals to most people. Especially not families traveling with kids and pets.

    I don't get why there will be a difference in range from 19" wheel to a 20" wheel. The 235/55-19 is 29.2" in diameter and the 255/45-20 os 29" in diameter. Is the 0.2" enought to affect the fange or is it just that they did not tune the car for the difference in tire size.

    My wind AWD will pretty easily hit 300 miles if i drive 60mph. 70mph, 250-260. i'm completely satisfied with that range, considering its pretty close to mustang mach e LR with a 100kwh battery. My lifetime average consumption is 3.5 mi/kwh.

    • @anthonyc8499
      @anthonyc8499 ปีที่แล้ว

      The efficiency on the EV6 is quite good, throw in the super fast charging and the thing is a road trip beast. The Mustang Mach-E has excellent range from 100% but the charging speeds are mediocre. Personally, I rarely find myself waiting on the Mach-E to charge but there have been a couple of times I wished it was already done.

    between this and the IONIQ 5 (and GV60), all cars are good looking, and have their very unique stile. The Hyundai is the larger if you need to haul cargo (and the back seat is a bit better for passengers, more flexible (with the ability to slide back/forth and recline, where as EV6 you can only recline). I think the EV6 is the best value for money, since its a bit more expensive than Ioniq 5, but has better features and options. If you wnat Luxury, GV60 is the car. Also, you have EV6 GT and GV60 Performance, but no Ioniq 5 N yet, so, but if you ask me, I I'd get the EV6 GT-Line (Possibli even in RWD, although I live in the snow, I'd really love a comparison in range between the two b/c EPA there is a huge difference betwen AWD and RWD, adn looks as the EV6 have a bit of a range advantage over the Hyundai's and Genesis that I've have seen so far.
    I'd totally trade my Model Y for this car now that Magic Docks and the Supercharger network is opening to CCS. Normally I wouldn't go red, but this does look good in red!
    Though Most folks will choose between the 3 based on look, and either way they'll get a great car!

    245? And that's not considering people aren't going to drive it that far you're supposed to charge when there's 10% left and when you charge your only supposed to charge up to 80% so how much range is there truly

    • @brdavis
      @brdavis หลายเดือนก่อน

      70% of the range if you want to quick charge so 245*.7 = 171.5 miles. So, if your daily commute is less than 171.5 miles your fine. If you're going to take a long trip just let the Navigation figure out your charge points and it will calculate the fastest route with charging in mind.
      When I tested it was a stop about every 2.5 hours which was perfect since that's about when I like to take a break on a long trip anyway. That was usually with around 20% charge left and took about 20-25-30 mins to get to 80% on a decent charger and less that 20 min on a good one. If I went somewhere to sit and eat in the meantime it would be full by the time I got back. A simple hack to pass the time is to hit up a drive thru before charging so by the time you finish eating you are ready to go. Note: I do not own this car this was for a real-world range test I was hired to gather data for, and the car had about 3000 miles on it.
