    Hey Tom, I just picked up an EUV last night and I agree with your sentiment about no percentage display.. terrible move from GM. I have however found a way to see it and that's in the My Chevrolet app. I know that's not ideal but hey it's something. BTW I bought the charge point 50A home charger on your advice so thanks for all your hard work testing all those EVSE units. 👍 I should have waited until the end to comment 🤣. My super Cruise doesn't seem to be as sensitive as that one your driving. I wonder if it's all software or maybe a hardware calibration too. One last thing I heard you talking about GM installing the home chargers with Bolt purchases on the podcast and I can confirm they are still offering that for up to $1000 towards the cost of it, since I already had the ChargePoint unit from my previous car they gave me $500 in EvGo charging credit.

    Love my 2022 EUV. It's identical to the one you drove in this video, minus the supercruise. I've been able to get about 4.0 mi/kWh at 70-72 MPH with AC on by upping the tire pressure to 41 all-around VS the sticker's 38 PSI for better ride. Interesting, is the Bolt EUV & Volt use identical tires, same size dimensions, and they're nearly identical in weight, but the Volt has a higher recommended tire pressure.

      I also own a 2022 Bolt EUV living in Western NC where we benefit from Appalachia mountains. We have a lifetime avg of 4.2 miles/kWh over 4,300 miles. From April - July. I expect that avg to come down in winter months. We also avg closer to 50 mph as we do less hwy driving. ICE vehicles do poorer in higher altitudes based on barometric pressure - no issue though for EVs of course as they don’t rely on oxygen for propulsion.

    The GOM on my first EV - a Gen 1 Leaf 30kWh - would do something similar when it was getting towards an empty battery...
    It would be at, maybe, 9 miles left, then, within a matter of yards, suddenly change to the dreaded 3 dashes ---...!!
    Like you said, really frustrating.
    Hey, not that we get the Bolt EV / EUV in the UK, but that seems pretty much all the EV that 99% of the population would ever need - an affordable 'family' car with around 3 hours' worth of (highway) driving range before you stop for a 'comfort break' and recharge.
    Those EV-skeptics who pronounce, "I'll only get an electric car when it'll do 600 miles on a charge - just like my petrol / diesel car..." are just nuts - 600 miles (at least here in the UK) would take around 10 hours of non-stop driving... who on Earth can hold their pee in for 10 hours...!! 🤣

    • @webcomment8895
      @webcomment8895 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t get it.
      The range on a vehicle like this is OK for most people most of the time, but the charging time is on these is too slow for road trips.
      People don’t want to charge for 60 to 90 minutes every 2 to 3 hours on a road trip.
      A 60 minute charge might be OK for some if you could drive for at least 4 hours (around 280 miles at 70MPH)) and we’re going to take an entire hour to eat lunch and there was actually some place you wanted to eat conveniently right next to the charging station. Often there is no place good to eat next to the charging station on a road trip. So, you still need to make a separate stop to eat or just go through a drive through and eat in the car.
      These cars charge way to slowly to get useful range added during between meal bathroom breaks.

    • @Tom-cn4cm
      @Tom-cn4cm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The modest sales are due to the modest production numbers. GM right from the beginning said they would only make 30,000 per year, with the theoretical possibility of making as many as 50,000/year.

      I never liked the Bolt EV. When I saw the first Bolt EUV, I thought it was just the new model year EV, resuming production after the battery issue was sorted out.
      I was wrong on both of those points. Two confusingly similar names, it should be a different name, but that's in keeping with Volt Bolt Bolt EV Bolt EUV.
      And the 2022 EUV might need a replacement battery.

    I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Chevy to show the distance to empty when the battery is low. It's something Chevy has been doing since 2011 with the Chevy Volt. After the Battery is depleted and the gas tank is below a quarter tank all predictive range goes away and the gas gauge only shows "Low". You have no idea how much range is left in the gas tank! I agree it would help with range anxiety but at least they keep it fair and don't show the range in the gas tank either. Cheers!

I haven't found the infrared camera altert system to bothersome personally. If I look away for about 3-5 seconds it requires you to take over control. If you need to read something, you can hold it just below the camera on steering wheel with no monitoring actions. Looking to the side and reading something or holding up an object in front of eyes will activate system. Another thing I've found, not that I do this often. But with my sunglasses. I've owned 2 Bolts and for reason I still can't wrap my head around I get WILDLY different consumption from day to day. I've taken highway road trips where I got upwards of 4.2-4.5 miles/kw over a full charge and some as low as 2.2 for the same trip. I had a spark ev and it was MUCH more predictable. My only guess is maybe the battery conditioning system... anyway, I was actually a little bit excited about the EUV until I saw the charge rate. The new price is great...but still with the charge rate it makes road trips pretty rough.

    • @fookschool
      @fookschool 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Finally! another bolt owner that gets it. I have the same issues. Absolutely no consistency. If I had to guess, the battery management does nothing until the battery hits extremes either high or low. I will see 10% range difference just with a 15f temp change outside. No ac or heating and same trip and speed. The charge rate is horrific as well. It has to be perfect weather and very low(but not too low) state of charge to get a decent rate(54-55kw PEAK). In winter, forget quick charging altogether....it just cant do it. Wifes kona electric is now our main car and it is night and day difference. I get almost on the dot range and charging rates are SUPER predictable. I reset my mi/kwh recently and am getting 3.8-4.0 right now generally driving between 52-60mph. her car? 4.4mi/kwh @ 60-65mph. And I can get that every single time. I tried to pull data on the OBD2 port to see it in real time on the bolt and the system freaked out stability control shut off, went in and out of turtle mode, traction control turned off, basically the whole system crashed. I restarted it fine and I can pull data while parked but NOT while driving lmao. That was a first for me. I've done it on the prius and nissan leaf with no problems...

    The camera in the center of the steering column must be able to "see" your eyes with Super Cruise engaged. You probably blocked the camera while holding the wrapper. My wife often drinks from a water bottle while using the Super Cruise. She has found if SHE can't see the camera, IT can't see her eyes - and will disengage. NO system is perfect. When you understand that, it's easy to avoid actions which interfere with it. Realistically, looking away from the road ahead of you for a few seconds in normal freeway driving is often a deadly action. I think it's a VERY well designed and SAFE self-driving feature.

If they had made the Bolt LT with the EUV front end, that would have been as show stopper. I've noticed that if I keep the speed below 65, the range goes way up. Tesla, not having been around the block as long as GM, made a system with potential safety issues they either ignored or didn’t have the expertise / institutional knowledge to foresee. Whereas GM, having been around the block much longer and likely more risk averse, was perhaps conservative in their design.

The Range Estimator is a nice option, but only knowing the battery level within 5% increments isn't good enough. And that's really the issue. Regardless, as I said, I think this was an intentional design on the Bolt EV/EUV that I personally agree with. When there's zero accessible buffer after 0% (possibly unique to the Bolt), it makes sense to simply state that you are extremely low on range under 5%. If you hadn't already mapped out your distance before it switched over, you're being extremely reckless (something GM probably doesn't want to encourage).
      The reason it's a pain for Tom is simply because he's trying to test down to exactly 0%, so for that, it's an inconvenience. Meanwhile, in the real-world my Bolt EV and others I've reviewed, I've arrived at a number of chargers in the middle of nowhere with between 0% and 5% battery, and every time the Range Estimator switched over to "Low," I had already mapped out arrival to my destination within a mile or less.

    I have some points to say:
    - the GOM of the Bolt EV/EUV is made so that people be aware that starting 15% SOC they need to think to stop and charge. That’s why it changes to orange at 14.9 % SOC. The same as an ICEV (the redline), once you see orange, start to look for a recharge. As for the ICEV, you have about 20 miles left to empty. Don’t see why the need to know if the battery is 2% or 5%. Although you know. Because the gauge is in increments of 5%, so as long as you see 2 blocks, you are sure you have at least 5% SOC.
    - if you want to know the exact % of the SOC, use the MyChevrolet app linked to the car. You'll have it in 1% increments.
    - it’s great to see a Bolt EUV that has the shape of a box, is 15% more efficient than the Ioniq 5
    - if you really want to know how much range you have after LOW, just remember LOW starts at 7%. You have the efficiency in the DIC. So you do the math : 3.6 x 65 x 0.07 = 16 miles. The MIN is 0.82 x Middle number = 13 miles. So that’s that. This is why you could get to the DCFC that was 12 miles away from the moment LOW appeared in your DIC
    P.S. I have a Bolt 2019 since 2018 and never felt the "range anxiety". I think "range anxiety" is a made up word by people who don’t know what they are doing. Hell, people talk about "range anxiety" even at 250 miles.

Also, if you still have the original pack like I do and software range locks, AND follow their ridiculous recommendations, you only get about 56miles range in winter. I get 140miles in winter for range, 10% top end locked out 126miles and GM recommends not to discharge below 70miles left lmao. I can't even go to work and back on that in winter without charging at work. Every other EV I had has been way better. The non thermal managed 2013 leaf dropped from 80-100miles range to 60-80miles in winter, the wife's Kona electric barely drops anything on charge rate or range. Bolt is a nightmare.

      @@fookschool I am not sure what are you talking about. There were two things that GM advised (not even imposed) to mitigate the so call "fire hazard" : one, was to charge to 90% SOC and when possible, don't go lower than 70 miles (which is about 25% SOC). GM didn't say "avoid going under 70 miles". Reread your letter. The second one, a patch that limits the charge to 80% but you can go as low as SOC as you want.
      I didn't care of any of the two. I charged my battery to 100% SOC when needed and went as low of SOC I needed. The percentage of Bolt EV that got burned was 0.01x less than the probability of me getting covid. I got my battery replaced before the second patch was out and I wouldn't have done it either.
      As for the thermal management, I have no idea what are you talking about. The Bolt EV has one of the best thermal management systems, tailored to give a long life to the battery packs. There are out there already Bolt EV who have already 200 000 miles under their belt and with around 10-13% degradation. And yes, it's a reality, all the EV in cold temperature have a reduced range (varying from 30 to 40% in general). If you had a bolt and dealt with the idiots at gm "guiding" you through the ever changing recall process you would know this. Then your claim of "best thermal management" is a joke. They do the absolute bare minimum for cold temps. Look at actual range figures for EVERY other EV in winter. None of them drop as bad as the bolt does. Their management is only set up to keep the pack above freezing. THAT IS IT. You must be from California which is the reason I made the mistake of buying this car. Glorious reviews everywhere of spectacular range. Take the car to Michigan and tell me you still think this car is good. Like the subpar 55kw max charging speeds that drop to 38kw after 48-52% charge? Try 18-21kw for that same charge level in winter. Want the bolt to warm the pack up before quick charging? Oops, the software doesn't include that option. You are at the mercy of winter temps. Hmmm. Odd that the Kona electric which hovers around the same price does include that. The average loss for teslas with heat pumps is 10-15%, kona I personally test at 22% loss. Bolt? 41% LOSS! how is that a respectable loss? I'm not knocking on the hardware that LG made (because almost the whole car is LG parts). LG did a good job. GM screwed up a surefire thing. The ONLY job GM had was to put the car together and write the software. And that is exactly where they failed. And I know my bolt inside and out. I have OVER 92,000 miles on it. Who cares if degradation isnt much if the car keeps losing features that were promised? The phone keypass...remember that? probably not, as they promised it, gave a partial almost useless solution and then ripped it away with an update. All remote functions are pulled and you have to use onstar to get that back...when it works, which is still hit or miss. I get screen glitches when starting, sometimes the backup camera locks up the screen, if I pull too much data on the OBD2 port the entire system crashes. You heard me right, it will crash just by pulling too much traffic on the OBD2 port. Is there anything that GM HASNT handicapped? Btw, very unhappy that I also have to use android auto to do anything with the car navigation wise vs my nissan leaf that has gps and navigation built in with charging availability. The kona has charger availability too. I'd keep going but I'm assuming you are so busy praising GM that you overlook absolutely everything that an actual GOOD EV has. You get what you pay for, which for the bolt isnt much.

      @@fookschool curious why you don't just sell that crappy Bolt and buy a better EV? Prices for used are super high right now and you should do pretty well...no?
      Just curious.

    You're exactly right about the driver assistance. Supercruise assists only when you don't need it to. In a Tesla it's nice to be able to actually use the system to assist you, otherwise what's the point. If a system is going to disable itself when I grab a candy bar or drink, I'd just go back to steering w my knee.

    For people thinking about EV, remember you normally fill up your gas tank at about 1/4 tank. You do the same with an EV or if you get a Chevy they are offering home charger for free. I have a Level 2 charger at home and never leave without a full charge.
