Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Over half of all animals in the open ocean drift in currents. Jellyfish cross entire oceans feeding on whatever happens to tangle with their tentacles. The jelly-like Portuguese man-of-war can harness sail power to fish with its deadly tentacles.
The big blue is the world's greatest wilderness, far from shore and many kilometres deep. It's a vast marine desert where there is little to eat and nowhere to hide. Yet it's home to some of the biggest and most spectacular creatures on earth.
This episode reveals what it takes to survive in this savage and forbidding world. We witness feats of incredible endurance, moments of high drama and extraordinary acts of heart-wrenching self-sacrifice.

Jellyfish: kinda floats around
Pirates of the Caribbean theme starts playing.
They played it because of the ship named the Man O' War
Fun fact the Portuguese man o war isn't actually a jelly fish. they are siphonophore's is a colony of smaller animals the float the reproduction even the tentacles (which themselves can be divided up between digestion and attacking) are separate animals fused together.
It's basically a very small floating carnivorous city.

Almost everyone who grew up in south Florida along the coast has a story about these things. For me I always knew not to mess with them but I had one drift up to me while surfing once and brushed up against several tentacles with my foot. My whole foot ached but my toes were the most painful. They were throbbing like someone had smacked them with a hammer. If you get it real bad the tentacles can actually break off while stuck to you. Instinctually you'll try to grab them with your hand to remove them and now your hands are stung as well.

When I was 10 my dumb ass thought it was trash so I went to pick it up and got stung 🙃
I literally did this there was a whole bunch washed ashore and I was throwing them at my sister Bc I thought it was trash or something idk what I was thinking. Anyway she threw it back at me and even tho it was dead it stung us and for me it stung my stomach and my whole armpit muscle was cramped up and it hurt sooo baddddddddd
