I found this very refreshing. Too many people are in this space spewing nonsense. After 20 years of real world study results, Dr. Varady has seen it all, and is being completely realistic about what works. 150 minutes of exercise a week, weight-lifting to preserve muscle mass, eating slightly higher protein, eating more fruits and vegetables, eating a bit less, and eating in a restricted time window. I got a lot out of this interview. I love Dr. Varady's honesty. It's so important that we don't glamorize fasting and we are realistic about what the research shows. Knowing that there's such a high dropout rate is making me reconsider the idea of alternate-day fasting. I want a method that works for life. Time-restricted eating sounds promising.

The host was lost in some questions, could have been better to send her the questions in advance? Otherwise the guest looks as per she was not prepare

Horrible interview and info. I love listening to podcasts while I’m keeping busy. The 15 min TriMed interruption threw me off as well 😩

@LeahBrooksJeremiahGardens Good morning, it's not what she stated but, HOW she stated it (in my opinion COLD) Fasting is a lifestyle for me the last 8 years overall, I switch windows of time which makes it sustainable coupled with Nutrition and Fitness!

@@andreastone8629makes sense 😊. I think as a researcher she is looking at what works for the majority, and not the one-off. There are some other interviews where she talks about drop-out rates and challenges.

It’s a little alarming that you’re interviewing someone who doesn’t even remember what she said or researched.

exhaustion is real in academic careers (ask me how I know!). Sigh. And when there's not exhaustion, there's anxiety-related forgetting too. I just extend grace to folks because who knows what they are going through.

I too was a bit alarmed by her inability to clearly communicate her research (and supposed area of fasting research expertise more broadly). For example, when asked by the host around 12-13, about ADF advantages, she leads with what she thinks (literally she says “I think…[insert what sounds like personal opinion] and yeah, that’s probably the main ones”). It would be nice to have some data, even qualitative, about what her study participants REPORTED or what her study researchers OBSERVED about this issue. Geez. The host had great questions but the guest did not come off as a suitably knowledgeable expert.

@@MsRahrah The host specifically asked what Varady thought were the practical advantages of ADF, not the clinical/scientific advantages her research might have revealed. Also, the host explicitly asked: "What do you think...", and Varady responded with "I think..."-a common conversation convention employed by intelligent listeners. Varady answered the question with the audience in mind, it seems to me. My guess is that if the host specifically asked about clinical data, it might well have been provided.

Being unable to remember from her book, written ten years ago (based on research conducted even longer ago) about a minor assumption regarding the diet that wouldn't have impacted her research, is not alarming. It's being careful and honest. Most academics insert disclaimers all the time in conversation, fearing ridicule, I suppose, but also just acknowledging that no scientific opinion is fixed in stone.

She's done a ton of research. At the time of the study, she was looking into time-restricted eating. I love her honesty and got a lot of information from listening to her relay realistic, practical information.
