Treehotel: mirrorcube, nest, UFO treehouses in Arctic forest

  • In the far north of Sweden in a very tiny town, Kent and Britta Lindvall - believing that if you build it they will come - built the world’s largest collection of designer treehouses. At their Treehotel you can sleep in the trees, just 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle, but sheltered in a bird’s nest, a disappearing cube, an elevated caravan, a gigantic dragonfly or a UFO.
It all began when the Lindvall’s were having trouble attracting people to their guesthouse (Britta’s Pensionat) in the town of Harads (population 500). They began renting out a treehouse built by a friend of theirs (for his documentary “The Tree Lovers”) and discovered it was surprisingly popular.
On a fishing trip in Russia with some of Sweden’s top architects, Kent raised the idea of building a treehouse hotel with rooms “you couldn’t find anywhere else in the world”. The architects loved the idea so Kent went home and started talking to a bank. He raised enough money to buy some forest next to the couple’s guest house that had been sold for logging.
Two years later, the Treehotel opened with the first four “treerooms”. It immediately attracted
press from all over the world and celebrity guests like Kate Moss who talked about it on social media.
The attraction here is the mix of isolation and architecture. Each treehouse has a different architect all charged with coming up with something completely new, and that doesn’t harm the trees it rests on.
On our road trip through Scandinavia we took a very long detour north (11 hours north of Stockholm by car) to stay in the UFO for a night. Designed by architect Bertil Harström of Inredningsgruppen, it hovers almost 20 feet above the ground, suspended by cables from the nearby trees. Like any flying saucer, the hatch on its underbelly opens to lower an electrically-operated ladder. Inside the 30-square-meter pod has a bathroom (with incinerating toilet, like all the other treerooms) and plenty of space for a family of 5.

My husband and I went during Thanksgiving 2016 and stayed in the mirrorcube. Britta and Kent are very sweet! We had the most amazing meals while we were there. Our goal is to eventually go back and stay in all of the tree rooms. 1 down, 6 to go! To answer the question about how many birds fly into the mirrorcube - none! From my understanding, there's an ultraviolet layer in the mirror that birds are able to see.

Hey I wanna ask you something about the hotel. It’s about the restaurant and the guesthouse. Guests need to comeback to the Guesthouse to eat? And does the restaurant have a name?

The mirrorcube is one of the coolest looking tree houses I have ever seen. The way it reflects the trees around it make it almost invisible. Very cool. I also liked the giant dragonfly because of the bedroom windows showing the beautiful trees outside. That one seemed more like a home than a treehouse. Thank you for showing us these awesome buildings!

The red one interests me. I use a cane, can't manage swingy ramps or ladders. The concept is amazing! A patch of beautiful old forest is saved, and people get a refreshing retreat to relax in. Win win!

I actually thought of the mirror cube in a treehouse before lol...... Cause you can blend in, and its the most stealth way to be in a tree without having something heavy and decorated. You become 1 with nature. Whoever actually made that is a pure genius lol....
My other favorite idea is a house made out of a silo with several floors, and spiral stairs leading to each, with heat/plumbing/air in central core.

This 'tree hotel' is brilliant and most assuredly qualifies for ones 'before I die' #BUCKETlist! THANKS as always for your family's global travels and #SHARINGitFORWARD with the rest of us 'single continentals'!
(ADORED hearing your #CRITICALthinking oldest daughter evoking "people think" in reference to the 'spaceship room' {sounds like her future includes #STEM based goals and an enlightened life path? ;-}.. it's so wonderful to hear children not being brainwashed with myths and such!)

I think I saw the cube thingy somewhere and just to see it in one of your videos - Gawd, i feel like I've been already. In a sense. My favourite reaction was when you guys went to see the "UFO House" and there was just "no... Nawwww...." Because that's exactly what I would have said.
With all the exposure your kids get to great and inspiring architecture and not to mention being able to travel with you guys - they're pretty set to work with homes and dwellings in some shape or fashion. Such lucky kids! You have a lovely family.
The big jaw-dropping moment for me was when he made mention that the family staying was from Hong Kong. AGAIN, its like the world was converging. I live in Hong Kong and that dragon fly house is actually bigger than most houses here. I would love to come and stay at a tree house hotel - I wish someone would recreate this concept in Asia.
