- This is the battle theme called "Against the Black Knight" from "Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance". This theme is also an available music in Super Smash Bros. Brawl!

Fun fact: In his boss fight, in the Japanese version of Path of Radience, something goes wrong with his teleport power that leaves him weaker then he'd normally be, which is how Ike was able to beat him in PoR.
In the English version, the Black Knight, realizing that he didn't kill Greil at his prime, decided to go EASY on Ike in his boss fight, to let Ike get stronger. So yes, the Black Knight is so badass, that even when he's holding back and letting you beat him, Ike STILL almost loses.
And then in Radiant Dawn, Ike destroys the black knight into another dimension using nothing but a hammer. 😧

I prefer the english reasoning. i like the thought of the black knights ultimate wish being simply to be able to fight his teacher at his very best so he lets ike live until the moment he matches his fathers power.

Not since the days of Sigurd have we had a lord as brutally powerful as Ike, and you absolutely needed someone as powerful and devastating as the Black Knight to match him.
+Meta Knight Considering that Sigurd is at least as strong as Ike is (if not still better) I'd say Sigurd'd still win. Now Hector vs the Black Knight would have been pretty damn epic.
+Meta Knight Issue is that the Black Knight only has three of his skills maxed out on any difficulty you face him in: Strength, Skill and Defense. I know his max HP is 70 (this is also his max HP in RD) while his Luck and Speed cap out at 35 (which is the same max stats in RD). With 35 Speed in PoR, Ike is totally outclassed as he would get doubled in just one turn and lose the fight if he can't trigger Aether once per battle. Also, unless you remove the Black Knight's invulnerability to weapons not named Ragnell (if you're using PoR Black Knight), Hector isn't even doing anything to the Black Knight even WITH a hammer and all I know Hector's speed cap isn't enough to prevent the BK from killing him. Also, you need 32 speed at the least to avoid being doubled by the Black Knight if he has max speed (BK's max speed in PoR and RD is 35).
***** With Renewal active (heal's user), Alondite able to attack at a range and Nihil to negate opposing skills not named Parity, Nihil or Mantle, the Black Knight is still going to give Hector a really hard fight where BK can still win as RD BK can still double Hector while being faster. Sigurd is better off than Hector though the drop in defense for speed might not be that great in the end.
+Phoenix7786 Plus Armads is a super powered weapon that could likely counter BK's blessed armor!

*PoR BK > Hector
Reasons:
-Outside of hacking, game mechanics make it so the BK can't 'lose' except during a scripted battle.
-BK's stats are superior to Hector's at base and at max. With maxed HP, Strength, Skill, Speed, Luck, Defense and Resistance, BK still outclasses Hector if he was also stat capped. BK's max stats are approximately 70/30/20/30/35/35/30(+5)/27 for HP/Str/Mag/Skill/Spd/Lck/Def/Res by looking at Serene's Forest. So even non-blessed, PoR BK would still double Hector and have a weapon advantage. Base PoR BK's stats are still really high even if these stats are him holding back: 60/30/17/30/27/11/30(+5)/22.
-Alondite can attack from a distance (though Luna can't trigger then), combined with BK's ability to double Hector makes Hector struggle to deal with BK even if he does more damage per hit than the BK can if possible.
Overall: It's best that we don't compare characters from different games that aren't similar since stats and weapon effects (stats) are different per game. Yes I'm aware that Armads has a Might of 20+ in its origin game.
Still the most badass villain in the entire franchise. Dude was just so imposing and threatening throughout the whole game. Absolutely loved his rivalry with ike as well.
The biggest dissapointment is that this track doesn't continue playing during the duel in the castle outside of combat. If the execution was better we would have heard the entire track constantly and the atmosphere would have been that much better.
At least newer Fire Emblem games makes the epic and climatic music play(or a variant of the map of it) while you aren't figthing.

Ahhhh, this theme. I remember this theme. It first played when the Black Knight moved to and killed one of my units as I was trying to rush past him to the escape point. That was when I knew the true fear that this music brought.

***** The reveal was a bit lame though. I kinda wish Ike would have just dropped it in the tower without Ranulf telling him.
***** It wasn't even a "theory" - the Black Knight (at least the version used in gameplay, cutscenes use all kinds of ridiculous Black Knights including one called IID_BLACKKNIGHT) and General Zelgius have the exact same stats in Path of Radiance in every regard, from bases, to caps, to weapon experience - everything. It was a spoiler for dataminers, as you can never normally see Zelgius' stats.
Unfortunately, they never thought (until RD at least) to put in special flavour text if the Black Knight was defeated before it was meant to be possible - ergo: by removing Skill 91 (Blessed Armour) from him with debug or something.
I agree, that would have been a much better "HOLY SHIT" moment than Ranulf randomly coming in after a chapter and saying "Ike, I know who the Black Knight is, let me spoil it for you without a proper climactic reveal!"
KopperNeoman General Zelgius never even appears on the battlefield in Path of Radiance, most people wouldn’t know that. Not unless they pay attention to data mines or are data miners themselves.
Not at all, this version is my favorite by a vast margin.
I love how the Black Knight almost appears to be watching Ike in the cover art.

Ike: "My father robbed himself of using his stronger arm; if he hadn't, he wouldn't have lost, especially to the likes of YOU!"

Best theme in all of Fire Emblem. Best villain in all of Fire Emblem. Best fight dialogue in all of Fire Emblem. Best everything.
I just remember playing radiant dawn in the chapter where micaiah is alone and BK pops to save the day. All those poor low-level enemies that got wrecked by Eclipse while this theme was playing. BK is just too badass.

I always make it a habit to check where my units are relative to that center house in Chapter 11 before putting anyone in the boss's range. I do find it kind of funny how you just watch this miniaturized house door creak open and them suddenly BK. Did he have to duck down really low and sidle to get out of there?
+Cynical And I always give Ike a Wind Edge for that reason. Special pre-battle convo done to get that horribly voiced memory sequence set? Done. Soren's already used Calill's Meteor to attack Mickey and set things up for the extended epilogue? Great. Get Heron Reyson in to sing a Galdr and backpedal the frick away!
The amount of prep work for the final endgame/epilogues with minimal difficulty is insane looking back at it. More so if you boss/healer/BEXP abuse to max out stats and make 3-7/3-13/3-E a lot more interesting/challenging for yourself like I (foolishly) did my last run.
Heard it on my first run in Ch. 11. The house in the center of the map seemed like a good place to dig yourself in and rout most enemy units. Then BK spawned right between Rhys and Soren...
One word, EPIC.
When I first encountered the Black Knight in PoR, I broke into goosebumps, but when I started to control him and hear this music, I started to shiver.

It's not just about revenge at that point. It's two swordsman proving who is the strongest.
Due to the epicness of the song I had no choice but to max out Ike on lvl so that I could stand a little bit of a chance

BK’s speed being too high to double even with max speed Ike while also being high enough to double a speed screwed Ike… max strength Ike only doing 9 damage means you probably can’t beat him within 5 turns without skills… Aether is rng-dependent and Wrath puts you at risk of dying to Luna… reinforcements that come in and will either heal him or kill Mist if she hasn’t been sworded up or at least trained, meaning after turn 3 Ike’s heals aren’t as guaranteed… fun this is

Tibarn, Black Knight and Haar are my top Tellius characters for FE warriors.
Well, it's not like he was a "villian" per se. He's an antagonist by definition, I guess. But he's not actually been evil. He just had different ideals.
I'd much rather have him in Heroes, to be honest. But Warriors would be pretty cool too.
I like how Ike has no personal beef with the final boss. The black knight is HIS nemesis, killing him is his primary motivation. Same with mist, but she cant equip ragnell

I really love modern FE using a dynamic map theme that transitions to a combat theme for fights, but between this theme and _Softly, With Grace,_ I really miss the style of combat theme that’s just a faster, more menacing character theme…

this song always reminds me of his badass skill eclipse. It doesnt matter who you are, what you are, it doesnt matter how good your sword skills are, if the black knight uses eclipse, you're going to die.
The Final Fantasy series is known for having some of the coolest sounding RPG music but wow they wish they had hired this composer, incredible theme for a boss, and beautiful music throughout the whole game.
Whenever I think of the Papal Guards of Assassin's Creed:Brotherhood, this music comes to mind.

I first heard this theme on that chapter where he just came out of the house
I was like "he just came out of his vacation. I made a mistake placing ike there" luckily Ike dodged his attack and I was Like "HELL NO!" so I got ike to run and got everyone to escape, yeah that guy is no joke, and before you say he's easy, at that point in time the game is programmed to have the black knight impossible to beat, even with RNG manipulation.

I'm not sure what it is about this song. It just seems to fitting for the times we live in.
Nobody. Their respective theme songs began, fizzled, and fell silent in turn; the combatants determined that it wasn't worth it if they couldn't find a worthy song. Unfortunately, they didn't discover Red's Theme until a few days later, at which point they had other things to deal with.

@RikoZerame ROY. Roy's the only character whose father is still alive, but we don't get to know anything about his mom. You can make your own theories about it in Fire Emblem (Blazing Sword), but in Roy's own game there's never hinted that his mom is dead or anything, so since Eliwood survived the war with Bern, Roy would be the only FE character that doesn't lose his parents.

@ablon008 That's true, you can deal 27 points of damage to the Black Knight if it lands as critical, but Luna will kill easily if it lands. Resolve and Wrath, Resolve and Vantage, Wrath and Vantage, these are usefull to use because Ike will be able to attack first and most likely land a critical-hit before the Black Knight can attack. Miracle is usefull if Ike can have it because it will halve damage from Luna allowing Ike to battle for one more turn before healing, but Mist is needed though.

@balbarith45 It wasn't a translation error for the Black Knight's naming in Brawl, but a localization mistake. He's known as the Dark Knight in Japanese sources, but apparently this was overlooked during Brawl's localization process, even though he's called the Black Knight on his own trophy. Localization and translation are two different things, but you had the right idea.
And I don't see how they screwed up his theme in Brawl when they used the exact original version from Path of Radiance.

Reason he has better stats in RD is because (if you're dumb and face off against him as IKe before you get RAGNELL) he explains he was holding back. It is true though that Ike wasn't nearly as OP as he is in RD when he faces him in PoR, then again if you Aether you can wipe the floor with him

@zephiel123 Against Ashnard a combination from Resolve, Wrath, and Adept work perfect with Ike. Resolve and Wrath are an instant kill, but one of those with Adept are also instant killers. They can kill Ashnard faster than Aether can in one turn.

@zephiel123 If I'm right I did it on my friend's file not on my game. I am not sure if it is possible but those who say they did it before probably hacked their game because I'm trying to solve this question myself. Resolve can only be equipped out of battle not in battle, but their is a semi-base preperation before you fight the Black Knight so I guess that's how my friend did it because Ike would need to hold that scroll. Wrath and Adept work very well as a skill combination against him.

You know what's funny, I compare this situtation to Vaas and Hoyt from Far Cry 3, Vaas like BK was the one you'll remember the most after playing the game (and they both or fought and supposselly killed by you around the end of the middle portion of the game) while Hoyt is like Ashnard (Final enemy to kill, the boss of the other character, and the one you least care about and wish Vaas/BK were the final boss in a Twist)
That would have been totally epic. (= Nintendo should definitely make a prequel to PoR/RD with Greil and the Black Knight and everything, it would be beyond cool.

@ablon008 I never hack any game I own or play for two certain reasons: first I don't know how to hack into a game and second hacking might result in a corrupt game save file. Wrath is a superior skill if you wish to end the level or beat a boss without delaying for turns, but Vantage replaces Resolve allowing you to attack first and possibly land a critical-hit before the Black Knight can attack. Miracle is useful since it will halve the Black Knights Luna damage, Adept with Wrath is a killer.
i am issuing a challenge to any TH-cam user to play a given collection of Fire Emblem music on the violin/cello. I have not been able to find a channel with decent fire emblem music played in reality on the violin and it's pissing me off like hell. a challenge has been issued.
@clankb2o5 I answered some question on "The Black Knight" of my videos.
Summing it up: Ike obviously Lord and lvl. 20, try to drill (or level her normally) Mist so she becomes a Valkyrie, leveling should become easier as she can ride a horse and using swords to defend herself. Try getting her Valkyrie lvl. 10 untill this epic battle. She'll be able to defend herself against the units that keep appearing in the chamber where Ike and BK have their duell. Even low class healing staffs are fine now.

@DarkHaloWarsArbiter technically, the black knight is stronger in RD than PoR, his stats are better, however the situation he is placed in makes him a cakewalk, someone did an exhibition using USBgecko or something along those lines to hack two black knight's stats to make a PoR vs. RD match
You don't have to give up on the game. Defeating the Black Knight is optional. You can continue the story even if you don't kill him.
