60103 Flying Scotsman Blasts Through Devonport-6/10/2018

Since this video has blown up in popularity, I've seen plenty of people saying that it didn't "blast" through, and wanted to clear it up- I am referring to the noise of both locos rather than their speed, as their regulators were wide open creating a massive racket as they went past. Call it an exaggeration if you will, but it was damn loud in person!
In addition, I have more recently noticed a few people questioning the purpose of the yellow line- whilst from the camera's perspective it looks as if I am over it, I was behind it and had my monopod at arms length, less than halfway between the yellow and white lines. Unfortunately this was necessary to get a good shot past the many other people much farther over the yellow line, something I do not condone nor endorse.
From today I will stop respinding to individual comments and will not hesitate to abide by the disclaimer in my channel "About" section.

Another double headed run for Scotsman today, this time to Par. The engine wasn't working hard anywhere else, instead it was pushed, but this section has proven that 60103 can work hard.

Fabulous video, thanks for sharing. My Dad (died in 1972) went to work in Montréal Canada for at least a decade on trains with steam locomotives Canadian Pacific. His hobby was photography and he would take us all to museums and to see real trains. My mother was assigned to carry his photo bag with all the lenses etc and I was assigned to keep people away from him and from bumping him. This was actually an upsetting task for me because I was about 8 or 9 years old and people wouldn’t listen to me and then my Dad would get mad at me for not doing a better job of “security “.

One of my best memories is when l was a young boy l used to stayed with my Gran & Grandad they lived in Watford just at the end of the road was the train station my first sight of a steam-train close up in reality, l never forget it l was blown away ...not literally lol but probably possible if it was going fast enough as l was a wee lad .
My brother in law was a fireman on Southern Pacific Cab Forwards.

You shouldn't have to justify your OWN videos and description on your OWN channel to keyboard warriors in abundance who just love to stir up crap regardless. It was great to see UK trains again after a 20 years absence down under. One of the beautiful things about England, train travel, yes, I'll sub for sure 🌼

Never mind the trolls. That’s a living, breathing, hard working specimen of old machinery but in mint condition and doing what it was designed for. I would have stepped back as it approached, awestruck as it passed leaving people on the platform in a shroud of smoke and vapour. Poetry in motion, only thing missing was a blow on the whistle as it whirled past. Whereas in "old" lies an understatement considering the complexity of these machines and the high level of skill and knowledge it takes to keep them in tune. A diesel engine is mechanically simpler than the steam engines and easier to run and service. Blessed be the men and women keeping these beautiful, piwerful and purposeful machines alive!
She blasted through as far as I'm concerned.
You're right about the sound, but the loco itself is running very easily and well within its capacity.

@@guff9567 theyre both old girls, its more for back up, just in-case either of them have problems. And ij this day and age, trains are a lot faster so they need to be able to rely on each other so they dont clog up and delay the rail service

These lovely machines are a treat to watch , whatever your age be . It brings the child in you - you tend to recollect lovely memories of your childhood travel with your loved ones . It's just reliving those awesome moments . Cheers .
Used to see it every weekend when I was young, although with less carriages and no rear locomotive, very nostalgic

But a grand capture and I got a sense of 'event', I was that 3-year old when I saw her on her final scheduled run through Darlington *sniff

Cannot beat that sound! I have seen the smaller of Union Pacific's compound locos. And grew up in the Midwest with several "old timers" that participated in antique agriculture equipment. Those old steam tractors were great to see operate. If you want to see both steam tractors and locos, go to the Old Threshers Reunion at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa during Labor Day weekend. Plenty to see of so many different things. Or at least it was thirty years ago when I moved away.

Have failed to catch it, even though I live just a few miles from their track. Have seen it's little brother though. That alone was grand. The sounds are something else. They stopped to lubricate, and hearing it start out and pull away gaining speed was awesome.
That was really cool! I wish we had more steam up here on the north shore of the US of A, mostly NKP 765, but not for awhile. The exhaust sounds like a 4 cyl, whomever set the valves knows his craft! My hats off to you Brits. for preserving and continuing to use these treasures!

In 1988/89 The Flying Scotsman toured Australia, during the course of which a World record non-stop run for steam was achieved of 422 miles from Parkes to Broken Hill in New South Wales ( Equivalent to Inverness to Bristol)
Yes I stood next to track with my two baby children just south of Sydney somewhere as it blasted past us at speed Will never forget that day Cheers

As a joungstrer in the late 50s I be a Doncaster train station to see the sir Nigel gresley blast through and the Scotsman... My, what memories

I saw the Flying Scotsman here in a suburb in my state of South Australia way back in 1988. I am so glad that Flying Scotsman made it back home to the UK from the USA.

The Flying Scotsman run along some of Melbourne's rail lines back in the 1980s. Melbourne Victoria is the birthplace of railways in the southern hemisphere so it was fitting that The Flying Scotsman ran on Melbourne's lines.
I was fortunate enough to see the Union Pacific Big Boy last summer but can only imagine what it’s like to see this legend ⭐️

The fellow standard on the edge obviously knew what he was doing, has is phone/camera in vertical position, as all photographers know verticals give you the full scene!
I can never understand why people use portrait mode when photographing anything other than portraits.

Steam - great memories from riding the steam trains when my Dad worked for Rhodesia Railways in the '60s to the steam train that took my wife and I from Khartoum to Wadi Halfa in 1981.

My father worked for the L.N.E.R. We lived near to the railway engine sheds at. East Ardsley. On his day off during my school holidays he often took me to the sheds where they cleaned locomotives, he would help them by driving the engines up to a turntable to get cleaned. He would lift me up onto the footplate of the one just cleaned and
Drive to a parking spot, I remember being on the Flying Scotsman, but the one I liked best was The Silver Fox.

Those people on the platform edge taking pictures, would have been totally shocked had something been coming the other way.
Definitely, it's a massive problem when Flying Scotsman is out and about, but unfortunately many normal people don't realise the danger they are putting themselves into, as well as potentially jeopardising the railtour industry
When it’s at the end of it’s life, it would be incredible if it went through the Chunnel and did a big Europe tour

My great-great grandfather was a train driver here in Melbourne, Australia. He used to drive engines under a bridge on my grandfather’s route to school and he would wave at him as he went by. He loved steam engines (although obviously i never met him) and i’m sure he would have loved to operate the Scotsman.

Yeah, it sounds like its going faster than it is. But.....double-headed, and a diesel "DPU" as well on the end! (DPU is short for distributed power unit in USA)

I'm showing my age, but, I was more excited by the Class 47 😄
That was a special Diesel Loco over 500 built but a rare sight now on UK networks being replaced by 66's, 60's. Use to have 47 operate XC services from Bournemouth - Birmingham NS and then for rest of journey to Preston / Glasgow operate by electric loco such as 86, 87 (post 1974).

It gives a lot of info about the Loco and it's number. 1472 was it's original number, 4472 was it's second number and only held for about 24 years, it was changed to 60103 in 1948 so it's held that number longer than any other (72 years). So for historical acuracy, if it were to be re-numbered 'again' it should be 1472. Like many other Brit's we have always known it as 60103 and don't really go with the obsession about 4472.
It seems to have become more of a topic since the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express appeared, with many people incorrectly assuming it was the Flying Scotsman used in the film. It was not the Hogwarts Express.

I remember as a kid sitting on the railway bank, just south of Stevenage old station, watching the last scheduled service of the flying Scotsman at 10:24. The place was crowded.

Fantastic! But a bit disappointed that at the end of the units was a modern diesel electric pushing from behind! For obvious reason back in the good 'ol days their were only 3 carriages not 30!
With all those passenger cars and a diesel loco, that baby's got some horsepower.

One individual has pressed "Dislike". I love that. The title was that the Flying Scotsman Blasts through Devonport. Ok, what didn't they like? It was definitely the Flying Scotsman. Check. It was definitely Flying. Check. It was more than likely Devonport. Check. So what did they expect? The old girl doing 1555 MPH? Pink coaches? 4 dozen coaches? Yellow wheels? Fireman hanging out of the cab with Skull and Crossbones? About the only thing not to like was the whistle, which ain't no Gresley Chime! Next time, please title it, "Locomotive "Sir Lancelot" going backwards through Accrington being chased by a Wasp at Midnight!" At least it'll give 'em grounds for complaint!!!!
