  • Turkulainen TT-Ajon Mailmanmestari Jarno Saarinen menehtyi Monzassa Italiassa 20.5.1973. Vierailimme hänen veljiensä ylläpitämässä museossa, jossa saimme tutustua moottoripyöriin sekä esineistöön joka kuului Jarnolle. Täältä turusta se kaikki alkoi..

Jarno will always stay in our memory. Still we just cant really understand his skill on a racing-motorcycle. He was like a superman. Racing fans all ower the world still talk about him with a deep respect for him and his racing skill on a motorcycle. Why was he taken away from us..... Destiny is so cruel many times.... Why is it like a ´black hole´ in our heart when we think about him. It is because of the fact we loved this man Jarno Saarinen.... I will go there to see your museum one day soon

I have seen Jarno live in Hockenheim one week before Monza at the age of 16. He was my absolute hero, despite of all Agos, Reeds and Sheenes

You had to see him at a race meeting to realise and appreciate he was something very very special. Few people are as one with their race bike like Jarno was, Mike Hailwood - a close second - Marq Marquez also.

Here is a 1958, Tunturi Tuisku. The original one went its way, and we were able to find an identical one a few years ago, to replace the missing one. Then there is the paddock bike, the little one, to move easily around the paddock. And in the evenings, as other riders also had them, we raced them!!!

We have this very special chance today to visit the Private Museum of Jarno Saarinen here in Turku, kept by the brothers of Jarno, Jari & Jarkko. The museum exhibits many memories and showcases the articles originally owned by Jarno. We will go back through the years, and let Jari and Jarkko tell us about this special place, 'where it all began'.

Q: Could you tell us a little bit about the stuff and motorbikes that we see here.
A: Over there, is his first (Jarno) motorbike that he rode, a 1962, 175cc Puch.
Here is a leather suit, used in 1973.
The black one was his first one.
The red/white one, was used in 1972 as he won the World Championship.
And in the early years, when he raced ‘ice-racing’, he used this ‘oil-skin’ suit, as Gore-tex wasn’t around back then!!!!

And as Jarkko stopped, I began to race with Jarno, though we were in separate classes here in Finland! When I went to the army, I stopped racing, and Jarno continued.

There were some people that didn’t like Jarno, but that might be because he was quicker!!!
If someone is interested in visiting this Museum, is it possible. Yes, that’s not a problem, but the interested group should get in contact with us first so that it can be arranged.
Thank you for your time and letting us in here!
    You are welcome.

Q: Jari, can you tell us about this place.
A:This place has been here as long as the building, so that is around 80 years.
It has been used as a garage, storage space, during the war it was used by the army, and after the war it was used by us as our interest in motorcycle racing grew. We worked on our bikes here, preparing them for the races. Now this space is dedicated to the memory of Jarno as a Museum.

Q: This bike, with the Mannequin of Jarno on it. What type of history does it have?
A: It is a1971, 250cc Yamaha, which Jarno rode. It ended up, around the world, and we were lucky to find it, and bring it back to the Museum. At the time, it was owned by the importer in Finland, and Jarno raced it for them!

Q: Lets go through what we find here, and could you tell us how the interest in racing started and what you (brothers) did here in the evenings?
A: We obviously worked on bikes here, and so forth. Our oldest brother, Jarmo, started with racing and working here. Jarkko then started, and as he stopped, Jarno started and for sometime, along with Jarkko, they raced together. (Q: Who won? A: Jarno was a little bit faster!!!!!!)

Q: Can you tell us how often Jarno was here in Turku when he was racing in Europe?
A: He didn’t have much time in the last years, but for sure he came sometimes, and the winters he was here. It wasn’t worth coming so far home for a few days, as the races were normally pretty close to each other. (Q: In these days, did Jarno come back here?) A: Yes, for sure, to prepare something on the bikes for the championships.

Q: How were the days back then when you built your bikes? Obviously you all went to school and /or work! Did you spend all your evenings here?
A: Just about, we spent many evenings here. Many times late into the night, until we were so tired that we had to stop and go to sleep. Otherwise the work we had done would have been damaged by sleepy workers!!!

A: Here in Finland, the first practices were early Sunday, so we left Saturday evenings, stayed somewhere nearby or at the circuit, and came back on Sunday afternoons.

Q: Jarkko, can you tell us how it was between you and your brother? Did you have differences in opinion? Or did this racing bring you together?
A: It kept us together, and in the year we raced together, we travelled and helped each other.
Q: What type of person was Jarno?
A: He was pretty well organised, so, when something was done, then it had to be done properly! (Commentator: as it should be with World Champions.) Yes, yes!
