- Ashen Review 2021. In this review I discuss my thoughts about Ashen in 2021 following a let's play series I ran on my new gameplay channel. In the review we discuss the claims that Ashen is a souls clone, I talk about character progression, the difficulty curve, the itemisation in Ashen and how your playthrough will develop. I also touch on who may enjoy playing Ashen if you've never played it before.
This review is an attempt to help people decide "is Ashen worth it"
Ashen is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One. You'll also be able to play if you have the PS5 or XBox X/S.

This game is amazing. I played it with a best friend. We are not best friends anymore, but I came her to see this, just to remember the memories of our time as best friends. I also have been drinking Jack Daniels, so, this is probably lame.
You can always buy it on Steam and get a refund if you play less than 2 hours
Short, but fantastic game in my opinion, I love the art style and the open world, one of the best Souls likes without a doubt.

Playing it now I agree some of the simplicity compared to souls is refreshing, it's a blend of 80% dark souls 20% darksiders 2/zelda platforming and attack simplicity but visually enjoyable

Ashen is truely one of the best game i played this year. absolutely stunning, the music and the ambianc eis fantastic.
It's one of those few games i wish i could completly forget, just to re-discover and be amazed once again. STRONGLY recomment it, to whoever is a bit hesitant for the purchase, worth it every single penny!
Nah, the last two bosses are just tedious.
I was intrigued when it got released because I loved the artstyle and the gameplay seemed nice, but I never picked it up. Your way of phrasing this as an introduction to the Souls genre makes me want to get it since I havent played a single Souls game. Nice review, we'll see if I like the game

I have played for maybe 6-7 hours. It's amazing. It's shaping up to be one of my favorite games ever perhaps.

I’ve been remembering this game exists recently, and after finishing Elden Ring for the third time now I’ve been considering looping back to this one. This game was a bit of a cult hit on release, I’m hoping more players who passed it up like me are looking back at it for something that scratches that tingly itch Elden Ring has left us with
Funny you mention this, I'm in the same boat... and now I see this as the Elden Ring before Elden Ring. It's not Dark Souls, but expands on that theme (in some ways) and is more polished than any of the souls games, which is impressive, considering this is A44's first game. It does some things better IMO. All in all, a great game that stands on it's own.
@@RobVespa I only just realized they announced their second game Flintlock like a month ago and that game looks frickin’ neat too; I have high hopes for A44’s future with their strong foundations

This game is absolutely beautiful in my opinion. A great souls like game while also standing out gameplay and story wise. Unlike dark souls grim realism with the end of the world, this game offers a very hopeful future for yourself and the characters.

Recently played Mortal Shell and found it alittle bit lacking, but this seems like it'll offer more challenging combat, and will hopefully scratch that Elden Ring itch till March! 👌

Good video but where are all the reviews of Children of Sissna mode? I had way more to say about CoS than base difficulty. Same with the DLC. Did no YTer play CoS?

I got it but didn't get too far into it. The slow start is rough. I need to give it a go again. I didn't like the button layout on the switch and need to see about remapping from the system menu.
Got it on switch. It didn't feel great playing. I want to give it a shot on a different platform but can't justify buying it twice
I've been playing it a bit more on lunch breaks, and it hasn't really gotten any better. I've done a fair number of quests, but don't really feel like it's worth it to continue.
I think you just put me off buying it is was considering it on switch as it's on sale

Good game, really would have liked an Ashen 2. Looking forward to Flintlock.
I've been longingly looking at this on the Nintendo Switch only costs a tenner at the moment but still to much for me right now
I can relate to that feeling! Been there many times! Hopefully it stays at that price long enough for you to get the money together
No classes, no stats, no parry, no crits, no backstabbing, no specials, all weapons same, all armors same with first 2 in the game being only ones with no penalties, no magic whatsover, repetitive fetch quests forcing you to traverse same areas 10x times, inventory management(thank god there's nothing to manage), exploration is useless as all the rewards you get are souls/healing items, extremely linear SMALL tunnel like world made out of open spaces filled with what feels procedurally generated nothingness. most music is one bar loops... 5 bosses (ds2 had over 30 and ds3 over 20)

classes, stats, parry, crits backstabbing, spells etc.. none of those is true reason why I enjoyed playing dark souls lol I think I liked dark souls 3 because its dark atmosphere, it felt like horror game with melee combat, usually horror games are shooters so it was new and fresh for me, third person melee horror game sounds unique for me, ashen is same for me none of those matters , it's about how it feels when u play and it felt amazing

The game starts great has some good exploring. It's pretty fun progressing with weapons even though everyone is the same pretty much. All same move sets. Save for a few with more stun.. Then just uninstall at the last boss the game is done you had fun

This game is good for me I’m not a soulsborn person and was trying to get into it but dark souls killed me wen it first came out so I dropped it but always liked watching people play it this is more my speed not to hard but not easy at all

This past week and it’s pretty fun but I can’t progress lol I think ashen is more my speed, you know of any other souls like that are easier then the souls series?
I don’t play these types of games but I heard Eldin Ring is nice, also if you like 2d games Young souls is a beatem up with souls like mechanics it just dropped and I love it. I definitely recommend Young Souls

I keep trying to play this game but can't shake the feeling that I've played this game before (Dark Souls) and I'm not sure if Ashen actually adds anything new or original to it because I just get bored instead of excited.
I wanted ask if there's a end game? Like is there something I can constantly do in the game? Not like a new game plus or just simply going back into areas and fighting but more like a Gauntlet I can go through like endless waves that get harder and harder (Doesn't exactly have to be that but just something I can do to stay on the game longer)
I think it’s a sin for any “souls like” to not have in-depth character creation. It’s so easy to take “inspirations” from the best and put your own twist on it. Not having str, dex, ext plus magic I think this one is a pass for me. I’d love to play but it just doesn’t offer enough for my time lol, I guess to put it bluntly. I’d rather boot up bloodborne or lies of P and do a new character build/playthrough.
This is on PS+ now if anyone wants to give it a try
I think the biggest thing that I heard that turned me off was that instead of upgrading stats you have to change gear like armor and stuff. Upgrading stats is one of my favorite parts of dark souls.
@dev null I don’t need 100% realism in a fantasy game. Also there are ways to make stats work with stories in games.

There's lots of souls like games that rely on gear and no player stats. It's different but it's similar to upgrading stats and weapons because different gear potential gives you different defenses and buffs. I don't mind it.

I suggest Remnant from the Ashes. But I'm sure you done played it, my favorite soulsborne game ever.

I don't understand why everybody has been loving this game. I absolutely loved and adored every from soft game so I look for souls like games. I stumbled across this game because it looked a lot like absolver and it seemed nice at first. But as I played through the game I realized how blatantly unfair the game is. I don't know if it's something I'm doing but it seems like every enemy no matter how basic, big,small, or anything else can kill me in two hits, this compared with some of the shittiest hitboxes I've ever seen, heatseeking insta kill spears, barley or not at all telegraphed attacks, having barely any I frames on a sidestep/roll, those weird shadow ladies that pounce on you, the games over insistence on you being outnumbered yet with the aforementioned problems it becomes an absolute nightmare, and so much other bs it makes the game unenjoyable for me. It just feels like the game could get away with all of these if it wasn't for the most obnoxious and annoying problem being the absurd damage. Shitty hitboxes wouldn't matter if I didn't lose 75% of my healthbar for getting smacked by air, getting stabbed in the back by an enemy while being ganked for the 200th time wouldn't be a problem if it didn't deal 75% of my health bar and hitstun me leaving me open to the enemy I was originally focused on to finish me off while I'm helpless to stop it. The fact that climbing to the top of the blacksmith house and jumping off into a deep hole deals less damage than some one of the three random enemies with a wooden club that I have to fight at the same time is ridiculous.
fr dude, the game looks so cool but the gameplay is so bad, i had the exact problems and it made me refund it, ironically its harder than actual dark souls
@@m4tthemad912 yeah, all of the difficulty is artificial though. I gave up a while ago but I still feel like coming back to finish it out of spite.
Not to invalid your point of view, but this game was easier than dark souls for me. It focuses very heavily on stamina and little else. Smart engagement of enemies is everything. I actually found it relatively easy, but not too easy. The bosses should have been more difficult though.
@@HM13895 everyone sees things their own way. My problem isn't that it's more difficult than dark souls, because technically it isn't, but the fact that all the difficulty seems artificial. I stopped playing in the sand dungeon because of how unfun it was and up to that point the bosses were nothing but pushovers. Hell I even thought they were easier than some of the enemy encounters, the hardest boss for me at the time was the boss that unlocks fast travel after you kill it and it wasn't because the boss was interesting or challenging or had a moveset that I had to study and practice to beat, it was because of the hundreds of skeletons that spawned and 2 shot me. That's my problem with this game, there's almost no learning. Just keep attacking the enemies and hope you don't get stunlocked or killed by air.
@@pastesir3025 Yeah I get that. I dont remember it all too well but some of the things you say do ring a bell. The enemy design and combat isnt perfect, but it's a small studio making their first game. I think they did a great job.
I enjoyed the game as well. It's a good action adventure game, with very light RPG mechanics. Similar to souls in some ways, yes. But you'll be disappointed if you're only looking to scratch that itch.
Unless of course you love the long run backs to boss fights that can be found in some souls games... which leads me to my biggest critique of this game. The run back to Sissna at the end of the game was unbearable for how quickly you can die in that fight.
Way to spoil the final boss.

Its good not great. Very little combat variety, and game balance is for co-op wether its NPC or another human. Totally the wrong move.
