Come on now! I work in a special needs classroom and this is unacceptable!
That school needs to do better.

My niece did that she is also autistic but she was only about 7 and she took off on her bike she rode down a busy street and rode back. No one called the police. 👮‍♀️. However she is not non verbal.

This helps me be glad that I skipped public school and went to college when I was 13. I was so high-functioning back then that there weren't obvious signs of my autism, but we are positive that if I had gone to school, I would have been bullied, had behaviour problems, and been wrongly diagnosed with ADHD.

This is the exact thing that happened to my nephew when he was 9 years old. He to is on the spectrum, and he did the exact same thing from Lavaland elementary school in Albuquerque. He is now 16, but when this happened to him, it never made the news, and no one from the school went to look for him. We, the family, had to. From Coors and Fortuna area all the way to near the Blake's on Central and Atrisco. That is crazy far and dangerous. These schools have no idea how to handle these wonderful kids.

i think when autism day happens in feburary i think its important for many parents and teens with autism to come up to the round house and talk about the school situation is. i think its important

@rbrtpongo that is actually a great idea. My nephew is a wise soul but if you are not around them 24/7, there is no way anyone could understand the patience and attention and understanding it takes to spend time with them. They do need special teachers who are given respite care themselves.

I don’t know how in the hell, in this day and age that could had happened. Even back when I was a kid, (and yes I was in Special Ed). Our classrooms had no more then 12 students. And each classes, had a teacher aid in them. If a child had to use a bathroom or go somewhere, the teacher aid would take us. Don’t they do that anymore? She could’ve ran after him. While the teacher kept the others students in the classroom.

I would just love to see this case in court. I don’t believe the superintendent’s message is even genuine.

You need to figure out why he ran away from that school in the first place what happened? Something happened that made him want to run away find that out

Somebody at that school or maybe a couple of people need to be charged with child neglect & child endangerment.

This is so sad I'm a retired Home Health Aide and a mother of a autistic adult son. I put the schools in check all the time. I let them know if that was your family members with special needs you would let me go. More training thank goodness that this child is ok and the good Lord send his angel to protect this beautiful child. If you don't want the job get out of the field and don't knock down people with special needs. Because you never know if someone going to have to help you.

Someone or the school district is getting sued. This should between $75k to $140k if a lawsuit is filed. injured $200k to $400k picked up by a predator like Jared Fogel, Joe Biden, or death from being hit by a vehicle $1 million to $25 million. If the IEP states someone needs to watch the child all hours of the school day and only focus on that one student you better do it or face criminal charges if serious enough. Also with any lawsuit every school in the district should receive additional training for students with special needs based on their IEP and those who are specialist in whatever field for the diagnosis.
