    Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home at age 14 in June 2002. Held captive by a fanatic named Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, Smart was repeatedly raped, drugged and forced to endure religious rituals, until earning her freedom in March 2003. She has since become a noted activist and author, launching the Elizabeth Smart Foundation in 2011 and authoring My Story in 2013.
    On June 4, 2002, Smart and her family attended an end-of-year awards ceremony at her school, where the 14-year-old won several awards for academics and physical fitness. Early the next morning, about an hour after midnight, Smart was awakened in the bedroom she shared with her younger sister Mary Katherine by the sound of footsteps and the feeling of cold metal against her cheek. A man whispered, "I have a knife to your neck. Don't make a sound. Get out of bed and come with me, or I will kill you and your family." The kidnapper, a man by the name of Brian David Mitchell, led Smart out of the house and marched her for hours through the forest to a camp where his wife, Wanda Barzee, was waiting.
    Mitchell believed he was a prophet named Immanuel, and after performing a bizarre wedding ceremony - he was also a polygamist - he declared Smart to be his wife and raped her. "I tried to fight him off me," she later testified. "A 14-year-old girl against a grown man doesn't even out so much."
    Mitchell and Barzee held Smart captive for the next nine months as they moved between California and Utah. Mitchell raped Smart daily - sometimes multiple times per day - and frequently kept her tethered to a tree. He forced her to consume vast quantities of alcohol and drugs and often did not feed her for days, bringing his captive to the brink of starvation. All the while, Mitchell attempted to indoctrinate Smart in his bizarre religious beliefs and convince her that he was a prophet.
    On March 12, 2003, a passerby recognized Mitchell walking with Smart, who was veiled and wearing a wig and sunglasses. Authorities arrested Mitchell and his wife and returned Smart to her family that evening.
    The prosecution against Brian David Mitchell stretched on for years, complicated by questions about his mental fitness to stand trial. Finally, on December 10, 2010, more than eight years after the kidnapping, a jury in a federal courtroom in Salt Lake City found Mitchell guilty of kidnapping and transporting a child across state lines for sexual purposes. He was sentenced to life in prison, and Brazee was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for her part in the crimes.

    I had the privilege of hearing her speak at a seminar a couple of months ago! She's a phenomenal speaker, incredibly inspiring, and speaks with a calm, soft grace and sureness. I love how she frames her narrative--she doesn't want to be known for that period of time she was gone, she wants to be known for everything that came after. That's how she defines herself--as who she is as a person, not by this thing that happened to her.

    Thank you so much for doing this, Scott. I have followed Elizabeth's journey for years. 21 years later, and Elizabeth is married, has children of her own, and the Elizabeth Smart Foundation does wonders in providing hope, while seeking to end the victimization and exploitation of all people, especially children.Safe travels, and Happy Holidays.-Joe from Joplin MO

    This was such a horrible crime, and she was one brave little girl who was also very smart to survive this monsters' clutches. It's so hard to believe that this many years have gone by since this took place. It feels like yesterday. I think the whole world was looking for her. I wish Wanda would have gotten the same sentence as her deranged husband did. Anyone who preys on innocent kids should never be let out into the public again. I think we all breathed a huge sigh of relief when she was found alive. People say in court that children shouldn't testify because they can't remember exact events and situations properly to allow a fair trial. I say it's young children who will absorb these things like a sponge and because of that their testimony may be the most accurate of all. Elizabeth Smart's young sister may have saved her life and was most definitely one of the biggest reasons they were able to find her, thank God! Wonderful video Scott. It's nice to be reminded of a happy ending now and then. I wish this could happen all of the time.

    Very interesting video. Do you remember the Jaycee Duguard case? It was similar to this one where this guy abducted her as she was walking to school in broad daylight in front of her Stepfather. She was found alive years later alive held captive in his house with her two children she had by him. I don't know much else but it might be something that you might want to look into one day.

    I remember when this all happened. So nerve wrecking for a whole 9 months I couldn’t imagine the parents pain in not knowing where their daughter is & if she was still alive or not. Although we didn’t personally know her my family. We were so relieved when she was found safe & sound. I remember it like it was yesterday seeing it all over the news her being reunited with her family as we cried. One of the bravest ladies I know of, especially when it came down to telling her story on her autobiography. Just wow, she’s amazing. The class has been studying the case here in Tampa where the girl tricked the serial killer into letting her go. She led police to him breaking the case. The story was on lifetime called" Believe Me" The survivor is going to visit her class. She is now in law enforcement. So cool.

    I live downtown SLC. I was right here when all of this happened. When I would drive down State Street, I at times would see a weird guy and some woman dressed like Moses yelling at passing cars, and just being weird. Then Elizabeth Smart got kidnapped, and as it was revealed who did it, it was this weirdo and this woman, Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. I remember praying for the Smarts, and being shocked when she was found. Elizabeth had to be encouraged to admit that yes, she was Elizabeth Smart. BDM tried brain washing her, and even tried giving her a new name. Thank You Scott for coming here and doing this story. I would have loved seeing you here!! I find the way we as a society relate to Elizabeth's ordeal encouraging. Her name is a household word, whereas most people have to do a google search to find the names of her tormentors, and they're rarely built up to be more than "big, disgusting, sadistic perverts". Quite the opposite of the situation of Melissa Smith, whose grave Scott visited last month. Her killer had something of a cult of personality built around him, and people still can't get enough gruesome stories about him 50 years later. Scott was probably the most respectful of all the TH-camrs who have visited Melissa's grave so far, but even in his case, she was only a plot point in the story of her rapist and killer, and you'll never see her name mentioned without his. None of the names of the 30 or so lives this man destroyed are remembered by most, while movies continue to be made about him. Whatever other problems we have as a society, it's good to see us moving in this direction. Elizabeth's strength is also reassuring: it makes me think that, as horrible as what Melissa and the other victims 4 decades earlier endured, it wasn't enough to take away their dignity in their last moments.

    • @SCOTTONTAPE
      @SCOTTONTAPE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So true . All these victims had a life , loved and were loved, and they are forever attached to the worst people in the world . Melissa Smith deserves to be remembered as much more than that

    Elizabeth Smart turned out alright and is an advocate for women in these situations. What a smart and brave girl who didn't let this atrocity take over her life but only made her stronger. Her last name suits her well. God bless you Elizabeth in all you do and thanks Scott for sharing this story in such a respectful and professional manner.

    That poor girl had to go through such an ordeal. I will always blame her father to be partially responsible for the kidnapping. He continually went out and picked up homeless people, brought them into their home to do work. Who brings in strangers to their home and essentially gives them access to his young girls and wife?

      Not all homeless people are not bad so don't judge, maybe cause you were never there.
