the sister may not have seen the person's face, but she recognized the voice. why didn't the police have ricci speak and ask her if it was the same voice? and THEN she straight out named the person, and the police STILL did nothing.

Richard Ricci’s wife Angela settled for $150,000 from the Utah DOC, though they never admitted any wrongdoing. Angela committed suicide a few years ago. At the time of Richard’s death, he had an 11 year old son. Such a terrible situation. The whole family’s lives were ruined.
He was a burglar. I dont care about him.

In the interrogation with Mitchell, they brought it up saying "A man is dead because of you". I understand they probably thought the guilt would get a confession out of him, and yes, he is to blame but so are the police.
Richard Ricci had stuff in his possession stolen from the Smarts, he was hardly a suspect police could ignore. You might as well blame Ricci for his own death because after Elizabeth went missing, he didn't dispose of the items, knowing that if they were discovered, it would make him look guilty. Yes, he didn't kidnap Elizabeth, but he wasn't innocent against crimes against the Smarts and he did illegally enter the family home and burglarized it.
Yup sounds right, cause that’s what they do, they’re not desperate to find the culprit but desperate to find someone to blame.
A sad flaw in our legal system that could be corrected by always requiring a prosecutor in the room during questioning. Draconian and dehumanizing tactics during interrogation is proven to lead to false admissions of guilt.

There are many victims here. Main ones are Elizabeth, Richard Reese, and the Smart family. They killed Richard by blasting him and his personal business all over TV. The stress he was under was astronomical. He probably thought he was gonna be convicted for something he didn’t do and was gonna spend the rest of his life in prison. And the one police guy is still trying to validate what they did to Richard and how they treated him. He should have just admitted he was wrong and apologized. But cops never like to admit when they’re wrong. Sad situation all around. Elizabeth has come through it all great so far tho so at least there is something positive.

Detective says he was never going to answer their questions, but that was BS because it seemed like he had continued to answer that it wasn't him! The problem was that the cops weren't getting the answer that fitted their theory!

Absolutely right. Elizabeth did more to escape than the actual cops did for her when she was missing. The fact that she was able to convince the man and woman to go back to her hometown shows she is already 10 times more intelligent than the cops that were assigned to her case.
Cats are best for catching mice. Mine caught a mouse, a vole, two birds and that was just one day's hunting.

Well it seemed like the younger looking one had his intentions and mind in the right place, wanting to listen/cooperate with the family, follow other leads and not fixate on someone who clearly didn't do it, but sadly you had bullheaded investigators like the other one trying to control the investigation. I'd never trust that one to investigate anything ever again. He's too arrogant, but I feel the younger agent is the type of agent they all should strive to be like. He doesn't let his ego get in the way of his ability to have an open mind and seek justice. He clearly was very frustrated with how this own team was handling all of this. It really is a shame they didn't listen to him, but obviously they ignored a lot in this case.

You have to remember this was 2002 when this happened. People seem to be forgetful of how far technology has come along in being able to identify, DNA, social media really wasn't a thing, yet other than chats, and the knowledge of investigation in general wasn't as competent as it is today in 2023 even in 2002. Technology for DNA WASN'T in existence until late 80's and 90s, depending on the State.

@@dustymoore5006 I would guess that police work even today benefits largely upon the character of the police detectives working the individuals case. It takes nothing away from the dismissive nature that the police have always had when it comes to any type of crime. They think they've seen it all and know exactly how these crimes are committed. And they pressure people to confess to crimes they know only about through the news. And not everyone, even today, knows about kidnappings happening all around them.
I felt awful for the man in the interview footage and the rage he felt as the police were telling him to lie. Reminds me of the West Memphis Three. The man was telling the police he had nothing to do with it, and with the evidence they did not have, it might not have been in their best interest to stop interrogating him, because he had a criminal past. But to sit behind a computer monitor and suggest that police have changed because of technology is naive.
There will always be investigators like the detective in this case who will pretend that they wanted to help find the girl when it was obvious that they simply took advantage of those around them who needed their help yet refused to follow ideas that weren't their own. Psychopaths work within the police force. We've known about this for decades, possibly even centuries. We can't forget that some people who are criminals hide within the police, and within the church. The man who kidnapped Elizabeth was that type. And even though the detective on this case probably never did anything to the extreme as the man they were supposed to be looking for, I'm sure he has many skeletons in his closet. Fell off his chair when he found out that Elizabeth had been found. I don't believe a word the man says.

This documentary fails to mention when police, on a tip, confronted Emanuel and Elizabeth, who was veiled, in a library and did not recognize Elizabeth or pursue that lead further even though she was seated 3 feet in front of the policeman. Absolutely shocking incompetence from the Seattle Police department at every turn.

@@inactive120 it's not Stockholm syndrome. It was the religious upbringing. She was not very smart, because she was raised to be obedient. She was 15 and only 8 miles away from home, for 6 months. She had many chances to escape but choose not to. During that same time there was a 7 year old black girl in Philadelphia, who was kidnapped too, but she escaped and got her kidnappers caught. You should read about her.
Hardly anyone talking about Brian here. The guy was/is a monster and at the least has serious issues. Maybe he was delusional, and needs to take meds.. But to be only put in a mental hospital, as was his wife?? that just does not sit well with me. He deserves to go to prison, in gen. population, and get dealt with there. But he won't. I take solace in the fact that Elizabeth was found and made a big recovery. But the trauma she must have dealt with would be overwhelming. She's such a hero here!
This documentary is extremely old. He was finally considered fit to trial in 2010 and was sentenced to life in prison. After a few weeks/months of being there he actually was beaten up by another inmate for what he did to Elizabeth.

I took it as focusing on the family because they were respecting Elizabeth's privacy. If she wanted her trauma on TV, I'm sure she would have been part of the interviews.

I have watched several documentaries about this case. Also listened Elizabeth’s book. This police officers in charge of the investigation were lucky that someone gave them a tip to capture Mitchell and wife. It is incredible to see how negligent they were from day one.

Exactly. He never failed that polygraph. Police and FBI just say that to see the reaction but I bet they beat him over the head with that non-fact for hours. He was in-custody when he fell critically ill so there should have been an impartial internal investigation into his death. He may have had a pre-existing heart issue but those FBI most certainly caused the fatal heart attack.

Elizabeth Smart was a victim. But so was Richard Ricci in a way because of the way the police framed him for a crime he didn't commit. That led to his death.
Amazing how bad the police conducted this case. The little one narrowed the profile of the predator in the first place and solved the case later on on her own. The uncle had to take the case on his onwn hands, and Elizabeth was victim of a manipulaltive psycopath. She was so brave, that is why she survived. My heart is with the whole family.

Cops the juries and the judge
The police would park Ricci in the state prison over the weekends. A sort of pressure mechanism. Friday night he told the prison warden he wasnt feeling right, he had a wicked headache. They told him he would have to talk to a medic the next morning. Next morning he was found unconscious, in a coma. He had a brain hemorrhage. He was brain dead. They pulled the plug a day or two later.
Your story has never been out of our minds... Your abduction broke us all. We are so proud of you for surviving. I and so glad your sister had a breakthrough and I am so thrilled that woman was who they call a karen they did great saving you...I am so glad you are a survivor!

Fascinating case. The Smart family never gave up on Elizabeth and solved this case themselves by doing the press conference about "Emmanuel", who was recognised by his sister. Well done too that alert lady in Sandy, Salt Lake City, who called the police after recognising Elizabeth. The family and the local community did so much to bring Elizabeth home. The only sad thing is what happened to Ricci, who died of stress-induced illness no doubt, and whose wife later committed suicide according to one comment below. The police did not treat Ricci well and were too fixated on him as a prime suspect.
I was around 12 when she went missing, we joined a search, I don't remember how soon after her abduction, but I remember walking around the natural history museum neighborhood with fliers. Her pictures were everywhere. Everyone knew about her.

Having followed Elizabeth’s story from the time it became national news until her success now it’s really amazing all she’s accomplished and all the kids she’s helped.

This is literally one of the best but heartbreaking story's I've seen so glad she got found got tears in my eyes.. feel bad on the guy who was stressed so bad being accused he killed himself that is terrible the way the police wouldnt let it go with him but what that poor girl went thru no one can comprehend its fantastic she was returned to her loving family so sad hope she finds happiness after her ordeal ❤

The police didn't do their jobs at all, as it was the public doing all the work for them!
I did not know anything about this case until now, I am glad to know that this girl is back with her family, I hope she has a better life from now on.

As long as I live, I will never forget the day she came home. Everyone in my neighborhood was outside celebrating. All of us were bawling our heads off with joy.

I have seen so many cases of people that just banished. It’s heartbreaking. I personally wouldn’t know how to go on if someone I love would disappear.. Elizabeth’s story gives hope to so many families going through this. She is blessed to have such wonderful,determined and wealthy family that never gave up. I’m very glad she survived and is doing well. I came here because I saw her interviewing someone that had been kidnapped. She did a phenomenal job at that interview.
A lot of these documentaries got one major detail wrong. Elizabeth said in her book that when the police took her into custody and she asked 'What's going to happen to them?' she was not concerned about their welfare. She was concerned that they were going to put her in the same cell as Mitchell and he would carry out his threat of killing her if they did.
They also left out the bit about them going to the library and being questioned by the police there.
Wrong. She wanted to be with him. She was upset he was in trouble. After that was over, she decided to play the victim, and capitalize on it. It made her a celebrity. She never had to get a job to this day
