I am almost 72 and I didn’t start canning until I was 68, showing you’re never too old to learn a new skill! My basement is very well stocked. We often lose power for days during the winter, but I just do my shopping in the basement! We also added a hundred year old wood cookstove to the kitchen. It is comforting to know worst case scenario we will still be able to eat. God bless you and thank you for making this video. 🙏💕🙏
We never quit learning till we pass, at least I hope I'm right...LOL. I took a few years off from canning then got back to it when we started missing the taste of home grown food. Congrats on starting canning Good for you!
@@mouseboots46 It’s nice your wood cookstove stayed in the family. They come in handy here in NH during cold winters. They give the house a warmth and coziness. I hope your son will enjoy the stove. These days they are pretty pricey. God bless! 💕🙏💕
What a great collaboration! I can because I know exactly what is in the jar! Food in grocery stores is full of preservatives and junk. It's nice to have your own personal grocery store. We waste less, because home canned foods are portion controlled. Thank you so much, LeeAnn.
My great-grandmother was the last person in my family to can any food, and this was during the Great Depression. Over the past few years, I've taken it upon myself to learn the forgotten skills of my great-grandmother, canning included. I love it! Canning ground beef tonight and beans later this week. It's a comfort to know what's in our food and know that we're prepared.
Canning and prepping is peace of mind. While the world goes crazy and store shelves are empty we can sustain ourselves with what we already have on hand. You can't put a price on that.
My parents didn’t farm, Dad was Air Force. Dad’s parents, grandparents and great grandparents all farmed as well as many of my aunts and uncles. I’m like you, I love the convenience of putting a meal on the table in less than 30 minutes, and knowing that it’s quality food. Keep teaching LeeAnne, it’s a skill many people don’t have anymore. God Bless you!
Hi LeAnn! I too went without power and I had the whole neighborhood at my house. We had a fireplace to keep warm and a generator that my husband took around to everyone’s house and nobody lost food. I cooked for everyone because we had a propane gas stove and I canned food from my garden and preserved lots of stuff. It is important to be able to feed your family. My canning education came from my mother and grandmother who was taught by their mothers. Good video and information. Have a very blessed night everyone!
Well said! 🙂 My grandparents lived threw the great depression. They farmed and sold milk and cream just to pay the taxes. They also raised just about everything. People in the city were in soup lines and almost starving with nothing to eat. Look on the boxes of the fast foods and there are so many preservatives no wonder people get cancers. Canned food is wholesome and good for you. We never know when that blizzard or what is coming will hit us.
All great reasons to Preserve your own food! Good job…and I agree. I love to grow my own food and then get to harvest and preserve it or eat if fresh. So good.
So important to ask and answer your Prepping questions. So many times I think people don't understand the preparedness mindset because we haven't explained it. Thanks for your video. 👍
Morning, LeeAnn. Great video. Never think of yourself as being lazy when 'just opening a jar'. LOL You already did all the work from planting to tending to harvesting, then filling that jar with good nutritious food & love.
As far as I know, I'm the first person in 3 generations that have canned, but I'm 74 and just started canning a year ago. I live alone and have two baker racks of canned meats. Now I need to try vegetables so I need to get to the local farm soon!!!
Always enjoy great value in your videos. If a person has never gardened, dug, picked off bugs, picked produce, cleaned, & prepared it for the table or canning & freezing, then (in my opinion) they cannot appreciate all that you do & have accomplished (even if Howard helps in the garden !). It is hard work & the time schedule of ripeness is not always convenient! You are strong.😊
Sounds like my childhood. I grew up on a farm, lived on an acreage, and now live in town. I have canned in all stages of my life and gotten the produce/meat from different resources. Wether it be from a farmers market, my own garden, or now from a Mennonite farm the next town over. I like knowing what is put in my food and being as self reliant as I can.
I grew up on a farm and have been canning since I was a teenager. I enjoy preserving the freshness of all that God’s blessed us with in our garden. Thank you for sharing. God bless 😊
Ooh girl, if you lived close I'd buy canned items, if they were for sale. I'm disabled (RA) and poor (like cannot afford a canner poor), but I believe in supporting small businesses. Great vid. Hope to find a canner with goods for sale in the PNW.
This is really my first summer gardening. I started canning about a year ago for convenience. Store bought food as do many additives. Started canning chicken. Using meals that I have canned on busy nights has made life simpler
I grow up with granny and parents that canner. The garden was at my granny’s it was huge we all worked it together. The chickens, pigs and cows were at my parents home. As a family we all worked together to prepare food for the up coming year. As a young adult, attending college and starting my life with a husband that’s family that didn’t can who relied on the grocery store was such a different lifestyle. When I married my husband of 34 years now he was supportive of all my food security ways. Even though he didn’t understand or wasn’t raised with that life style he was quick to adapt. Happy to say we now grow a garden together, he’s in the kitchen helping when not at work. 💜
LeAnn I canned in the 80's and then got away from this when working full time. I started again... slowly about 5 years ago with tomatoes. The past 2-3 years I have increased everything.. doing green beans, your vegetable soup recipe, salsa, peaches and blueberry and strawberry jams, chicken and beef bone broth. I still have some things on my list red beets that I haven't started. Most of our vegetables come from our very small garden and the CSA that we joined. Not only is everything healthier and no chemicals - but it is nice to shop from my freezer and pantry. What I can't can....I freeze eg. Asparagus, broccoli, corn and zucchini. chicken I learned to can from my 80 year old neighbor and find it relaxing and get a sense of worth looking at my shelves of "jewels".... rubies = tomatoes, emerald= green beans, etc. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and recipes!
Great points! So enjoying this collaboration! Thank you for sharing. I so love canning the foods we grow in our garden and canning others foods as well. You are so right about convenience!
Canning has been a huge help for creating fast meals for my son that has multiple food allergies. It has been such a blessing to have ‘convenience’ meals that are healthy and safe for him.
I love canning, but have only been doing it for about 3½ years! I love knowing i have shelf stable foods, especially proteins, on the shelf. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing my grandkids are getting real food & not trash. Thanks for participating in this collab!
Agree to it all. I grew up on a small "hobby farm" of 99 acres. We grew almost everything. We put up almost everything. My mother did go to town, usually once a week, but rarely bought anything. Things like Doctor apts, Dentist, Bank, Family visits, Church were what she did. I recall her buying Lunchmeats for my dad and things like freezer bags, plus clothing. Sears was still going by Orders back then, so clothing and laundry soap, would be bought that way.
You are so right canning your own food is healthy and rewarding. I can just grab a can of my chicken and make chicken salad if no power other foods to make a meal. And I sure have been enjoying souptember soup recipes from the Calabrian.
LeAnne! This is such a Great video!! Thank you for sharing all the reasons that you can! I agree wholeheartedly! We live in about the same situation as you described, 25 min from the nearest town. If I had to run into the store on a daily basis as some do that live in town...my word, I'd never get anything done! I've always been prepared just because of our long distance to town, especially in the winter! Its the best to "shop" our own basements 😊 And no, you're not a lazy cook! You put all the food in the jars! You're enjoying the fruits of your labor.😉 By the way, I love your kitchen!💜
Thank you for sharing the many valid points of reasoning behind why you can your own food. The security of having a good supply of food preserved, stored and ready for consumption just makes good sense and the peace of mind it brings truly is priceless. I no longer have a garden but buy from an Amish produce market where the quality and price is much better than the local grocery. Canning is sometimes hard work but the reward is so fulfilling and satisfying. Thank you again for such great ideas and recipes!!
I am 60 yrs old and 4th generation canners and this has always been instilled in my life. I have so many memories of canning with grandma and aunts, sitting around breaking beans or shucking corn with my family. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely LOVED this video! I agreed with every reason you gave for canning. And in my opinion, you’re FAR from a lazy cook. Especially with the beautiful prep work you do❤
i came from a long line of canning trying to get my daughter to can bought her a nesco canner she canned peaches and strawberry jam. she was so proud of what she canned. we are going to can applesauce when the apples are ready.so proud of her!!!
I've been canning my whole life. Grandma did and so does my mom. I love the feeling of going into my garden, picking the fresh produce, and preserving it for my family. The only better feeling is opening that jar when it's cold out and providing my family with a healthy meal. Very blessed to be able to do this❤
I love this! I agree with so many concepts. I'm not a big farmer but even us small farm girls can relate on the pride we feel when a canning project is done 😊
I raised 6 kids on a small family farm & money was always tight. The kids are all grown & scattered now & I live alone. I no longer drive due to vision so my trips to the grocery are limited. Canning makes me feel like I'm still taking care of myself & I truly enjoy it. I agree with your viewpoint on lessening my carbon footprint & also knowing what is in my food . Just subbed to your channel; thank you.
As you said, there is such security and peace of mind in successful canning. I am so grateful to you and other similar channels for sharing your knowledge and patiently answering our questions. Your guidance gives us the confidence to forge ahead. Thank you.
I grew up eating my mom’s canned food. It was good. I like the food I grow and process better than what I buy. I do buy from local farmers when I need to . I just love the entire process. It’s all good . Yep I just love looking at my canning pantry. All good points Leanne. ❤
I have jars from my grandma, my mom and my mother in law! I'm in Canada and I was sooooo thankful when ForJars decided to put out GEM(78mm) lids for us. I've never counted how many GEM jars I have but it's literally hundreds! Great video, there's nothing better than knowing what you're eating and growing it the way you want to!
Thank you for another share! I agree the prep time for meals is so much faster than even grabbing a frozen pizza at home, considering the per meal energy savings is also a key point on top of less waste and I ❤ that I'm protecting my family from possible ill effects from plastics. Thank you very much!
Thank you LeAnn. I don't remember my mother canning but I do remember my grandmother and great grandmother's all canning. I can because I don't want to eat what I can't pronounce. For me its healthier and provides peace of mind. 😊

Great reminders why we take the time and energy to can.
