    I know you guys did this five years ago, but it’s incredibly helpful as we are hitting it in about a week. I know that Video doesn’t do the steepness and difficulty level justice, but it certainly seems safely doable for experienced Overlanders. Thanks very much!

      @@KenTheJeepGuy That's probably day two of the BDR for us, so we won't be heading up Patterson until 7/31. Have fun! Hit me up on here if there's anything we need to know, and thanks!

    White Mountain Locked gate is at 11680 and also a nice drive. But this area has a more element of danger and adventure. I will go there soon!

    I have driven that road over Sonora pass many times, but have never seen the asphalt. I drive the Tucker Sno-cats for the USMC Mountain Warfare Training Center.

    Drove right by the western entrance to those peaks today, wife doesn’t do well with unknown roads, though we frequently travel to Dunderberg Peak, and Kavanaugh Ridge, little less exposure over there, Burcham Flat Rd had her in a panic today, she walked part of it.

    You ever head from Lobdell over to Pine Grove? I've read there once was a road between them. Looks like you might have covered part of that on this adventure. I live in Hawthorne, just across the Wassuk from Pine Grove and not far from the Sweetwater Range. I consider that whole area my backyard playground, more for spring flower/fall color photo treks and getting out into the hills than anything else.
    Nice video. Thanks for posting.

      Desert Gecko Sounds like a great trip! I will have to plan that sometime. Is it good for fall colors, too?

      @@KenTheJeepGuy Not much color in the valley other than at The Elbow, but even that's pretty sparse. Small pockets of color abound, as you know always near a water source, so along the East Walker River and near creeks and springs. I'm sure you know the "secret" little grove of aspens at Masonic.
      Spring color, or flowers, offer a better chance for color. A couple of years ago in mid-June I was heading home after a "for the hell of it" trip over Sonora and back over Monitor courtesy of SR-4 before SR-89, and of course I came home across the east-of Wassuk Range valley, past Fletcher and all.
      The pasture in front of the stone house at Nine Mile Ranch was covered in flowers as far as the eye could see (okay, I admit a touch of hyperbole, so I'll say as far as a nearsighted man could see). More lavender wild irises and blue lupine than I'd ever thought possible were in full bloom; it was the golden hour, the sun was at my back; earlier thunderstorms left an intriguing sky over Mt. Grant; It was a gift. Fast as I could I broke out my tripod and set up to take frames for focus-stacked pano. Not often do I come across a scene like that. But that's why I get out.

    How much of that was on the Marine Base ?

    • @KenTheJeepGuy
      @KenTheJeepGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My map (Gaia) does not show the Marine Corps base boundary. I am guessing about a 1/4 mile, but all these trails are used my the marines in training, so I suppose it would be all considered under their sphere of influence. From Google: The MCMWTC is cited at 6,762 feet, with elevations in the training areas ranging to just under 12,000 feet. In an agreement between the U.S. Forest Service and the Marine Corps, the MCMWTC occupies and is permitted to train on 46,000 acres of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

      @@KenTheJeepGuy I don't know of any since your video. Looks like you saw some smoke from the Boot Fire. I was up to Lobdell just after in mid-October. Terrible burn scar, but probably not too visible by now.
      The other dude might be thinking of this year's Slink Fire, but that's quite a ways west.

      I hate to be wrong, but I think you’re correct. In my hometown of Sonora, CA, “Mono Way” is the name of the main thoroughfare. You’d think I’d know how to say it. Oh well, thanks for the gentle correction.
