      Hi there. When you said safe, I was curious to know that since nothing is bolted in, if in a car/van accident and you happen to roll over or just have a bad impact at highway speeds, is it still safe to be in it with all the stuff out? When I visualize my head being bonked with something during the crash. It doesn't seem "safe" to me with these no builds. Does anyone else think this?

    I have to measure my 2014 Honda Odyssey and see if that futon frame will fit, because I love Eric enjoys Earth, and Leslie Kalks version, but I don’t have any of the tools to build one. Can I also say THANK YOU for not editing the video into a motion picture of perfection! Seeing how courageous you two are, with no experience, and DOING IT, is so motivating to me. Your philosophy is great, just get out there and experience it before you sink a ton of time and money into your build. Why waste time on the perfect build, there’s a whole world out there to see and experience. I really want to attend a van build in Arizona one of these days, I follow a hand full of nomads here on YT and hope to meet some of them someday soon , maybe ever you guys! Happy trails 💜💟💜

    Thanks for the Amazon link to “Similar “ desk unit...you nailed it! For $125 (in white/black/ wood tones) it’s the same unit as yours (if you follow the site to the actual seller -oneSpace store) they give the measurements within 1” of your measurements (they include a 7” high x top 6” deep shelf which you could not install or maybe it is better with the extra shelf up top..gives you options). That saves a tremendous amount of guesswork! If you lower the computer slide out drawer to match your stove height, we’re in business. Awesome...now if we could just improve that toilet issue 🧐

    Love that faucet! $16 from Walmart on a 3 gal water jug, it works great :) Being new to this, one thing I really didn't like was not being able to stand up inside, and trying to find a good solution (tried a trunk tent that got returned), latest attempt is a 6x6 popup screen room from Alvantor. Curious if you use anything for this?

    Love, love, love the futon idea for a no build conversion! Thanks for sharing the links. Question about you're third row seats - were they hard to remove/unscrew and are you able to re-install the third row seats or did you remove them completly with no intentions of re-installing?

    • @ChrisEmelia
      @ChrisEmelia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks so much! I was worried about taking out the third row as well but it wasn’t too hard at all. You just have to remove the cover over the bolts and unscrew them. They will be able to mount back in again no problem and I think the cover ( plastic piece covering the bolts) should snap back in place if you remove it gently. Best of luck!!

    I have a 2004 Sienna and used a curtain rod with fancy finials on the ends which allowed me to use small s hooks slipped between the side plastic column type of plastic uprights (see minute 4:46 where the curtain rod is pointed) and the headliner to make the privacy curtain secure . Then attached the fancy loop of the curtain rod into the s hook. I used a small piece of duck tape to secure the s hook and rod finial together. I tried the same type shower curtain rod idea but it would not stay tense enough to hold and would fall down. I take the time to try to explain this because this curtain was the most difficult problem to solve. In my Prius which I also outfitted as a camper I found a curtain rod with pointed leaves on the end which allowed me to insert in the same spot. In both cases i found the rods at thrift stores although i did look at Walmart and Old Tyme Pottery with no luck. I also secured the width of the rods with duck tape so they were the right width so they would not slip. I tried many different methods but these were the only one that worked. Good luck and use patience. Happy travels.

I might order that frame after I size up the mattress to see if it'll work. Glad to see someone else is finding this combo to be functional. Of course, this was 2 years ago.. how is it working out?

As for the shelf, actually we were super lucky as we had been looking everywhere for something similar at thrift stores when we came cross Chris’s mothers shelf she was gonna throw out. Perfect size and it’s been just great for us. Might wanna build in a shelving system on top in the future but right now it’s flexible and works great. :-)

    I have a Honda Odyssey with a no-build build that is based upon from the back at the tailgate to the point where the sliding doors are open. In other words, the area between the sliding doors is clear. I took out the 3rd row bench seat and one of those heavy duty 55 gallon totes with the yellow top fits in that spot and another one nestles on top of it. On the passenger's side I have a 2'x3' plastic cement tub on which sits a trifold cot mattress with the back against the tote making a nice chair that's as high up as the middle row seats. Next to that sits a 3 drawer plastic tote that acts as a small table. To sleep I just set aside the cement tote taking the bedding from underneath and put out the cot mattress.
    When everything is put back and the cot mattress folded down on the tub it is squared off and I can put a tarp over it and nobody can tell there is any camping stuff back there--it's completely covered and stealthy and I still have all the space between the sliding doors to carry things I need to pick up. Plus, in 20 minutes I can have everything out of the van with a completely open back.

    Hi! I just discovered this video. I'm a newbie. Just began watching and learning about camping in cars, SUVS and Minivans about 10 days ago. Your no build- build looks great!
    I was wondering if your kitchen counter n shelves are a student desk?
    I was considering using my student desk/book shelf. comverts to a vanity, for the kitchen. But I do not have a S D with a slide out keyboard table.

    I was glad to see that you can fit a full-size trifold mattress and still have room for the kitchen in the back. Nice!! For your Fridge solution, you could consider the Newair Mini Ice Maker Machine in Amazon which uses 130 watts and makes around 1 & 2/3 of a pound of ice per hour. Make the ice you need then unplug to save some battery power. Plug it again to make some more ice when needed then unplug when not in use. It will save more battery power than
    running a 12V Fridge all day. You could also consider a Jackery with more Watt Hours for longer trips, to run appliances and even to cook with a Mini Hot Plate Stove.

      Yes, that desk unit is perfect. Have a 2005 Sienna with only 130,000 miles (bought a3013 Prius C style #4 for everyday use). This would be a perfect short term solution. I have the plug In Coleman cooler (it is awesome) and yes plugs in to the rear 12 volt rear receptacle (in addition to regular house receptacle) but like your inverter pack idea. Also bought A solar battery charger that I have velcroed the small solar panel in the side rear window that keeps the van battery charged. Last question. No cassette toilet? Love the water pump (?supplied by?) and the “shower” option. They sell pop up shower stalls you could put under your van lid and take down in minutes. Bravo

    Thanks for the youth desk measurements. Looks like IKEA no longer carries that item, so I will probably have to build my own shelf/drawer combo to fit the trunk area. That slide out shelf for the stove (instead of a computer) is perfect. Will have to wing the space cut-out (the knee hole) for the cooler unless you have that measurement too? The futon frame and the trifold foam futon are still available online along with that battery faucet. Is there a way to add an equipment list with manufacturers to your drop down description? I had to rewind your video about 20 times to get the on screen parts shot. Looking forward to the next vlog! • @ChrisEmelia
      @ChrisEmelia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Last night we found a desk on Amazon that is pretty similar to ours and it looks like it MIGHT actually fit. However, I recommend you measure your stove and in general trunk as it's hard to know for certain if this one will actually slide in fine. However, here is the link and perhaps if not for purchase just a good idea for a layout similar to ours: www.amazon.com/dp/B01HELS4QO/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_glt_fabc_BSPN0REFFRH81JCQPVZX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=ml1&tag=thegymnomads-20
      Also, we did have to lower our pullout drawer to make the stove fit, so it's likely you would have to do the same with this desk from Amazon.
      If you do end up purchasing it, let us know how it fits so we can tell others about it!
      Hope this helps!!

      Hi Gilbert! While I’m no expert on vehicles, I don’t think that high of mileage is too bad a sign alone. Other factors would be nice to know like how many owners and service records.
