    Time spent charging on a road trip is DWARFED by the time saved charging at home while you sleep. My ICE-owning days are OVER!😎

    I had the Model Y for a little over 2 years and we took it twice to Akron Ohio from Brevard County Florida. It took about 25% longer with frequent stops for charging; however, we were more rested when we got there. We drove straight through leaving at 3am, arriving around 10pm both times. The Autopilot and forced breaks just made for such a more enjoyable trip than usual. Faster isn't always better... Can't wait to do it in the new CyberTruck. Not going to do it in the winter with all the salt on the roads. :D

      Same experience for me. Coast to coast, twice. Last time, when I heading east I took a long loop through Michigan's UP and Ontario. FSD in Canada!
      Those little movements to keep a vehicle in the lane are fatiguing. Not in a Tesla.
      I regularly drive up to my boat 65 miles away. I did that round trip twice in four days a few months ago, no road fatigue at all. I also like sleeping in my Model Y LR. Parked of course. Memory foam mattress, good mem foam pillow, sleeping bag and liner, Camp Mode better than any hotel. Unless I need a shower or the toilet my Tesla is always my first choice. I like to charge in the evening, and then move over a slot from the Supercharger and bunk up. No one ever gives a Tesla near a Supercharger a second look.

    You're right Chris ... and I totally agree about BEV's vs ICE vehicles. Most people don't get how easy and relaxing travel can be in a Tesla due to the Supercharging Network. We leave for a 4 hour 500 mile RT to the CA North Coast in our Model X with two 60lb ebikes on a hitch mounted rack. The range loss due to the bikes is 15-20%.
    It will still be one 30 minute stop to charge as we are going the longer coastal route to meet friends for lunch tomorrow on the way. The comfort of the X and FSD will make the trip far less taxing and we will get to our coastal destination ready to go for the next three days. We will put the X on a very convenient Supercharger (always mostly empty for our return trip while taking one last 30 mile ride along a coastal bike trail and having lunch at our favorite seafood restaurant. The car will be charged to 100% as it will be from home due to our solar home charging and we will make it home with no charge stops due to a slightly different non-coastal route through the California redwoods and the Napa wine country.
    There is just something peaceful about riding in a comfortable quiet BEV through beautiful, natural surroundings that is very different than the same trip in an ICE vehicle. We have done this trip many times on our previous Range Rover and although that was a very nice comfortable car, the difference is noticeable. We both have Tesla's now and are never going back to ICE.

    Happy new year mate 😊 Take care out there at the moment 😊
    Edit: also RE charge times, I don’t think road trips are the big issue. It would be a little annoying for me as I enjoy driving and find it relaxing (same reason FSD really isn’t for me personally) and having to stop to charge all the time would mean I would have to take a lot more breaks than I currently do.
    The bigger issue for me is everyday use if you can’t charge at home. Supercharging is pretty expensive and having to wait at a charger for an hour before / after work would kinda suck.

  • @skyemalcolm
    @skyemalcolm วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I live in Columbus Ohio and know the stretch down 33 that doesn’t have superchargers. If you have a CCS adapter you could look at a Francis Energy charger at a gas station just south of Lancaster Ohio. It’s a good stop and charges about as fast as a V2 Supercharger would.
    It’s honestly a bit weird there aren’t any Superchargers in Lancaster or Athens or one of the other smaller towns like Logan or whatever.

    Just finished a 3200 mile roadtrip in my Y. Been thinking about the trade off speeding up to burn more energy to get to the charger at a lower SOC vs slowing down a bit to get to the charger with a higher SOC so there’s less energy needing delivered vs higher power at a lower SOC. Would love a deep dive by you DT!

    • @WillieJamesWillie
      @WillieJamesWillie วันที่ผ่านมา

      My intuition says you burn more energy going faster than you’d save in the time savings from your speed resulting in more energy needing delivered to the vehicle which would be a longer charging session.

    Early on in our Tesla ownership we tried stopping to get some food before going to the supercharger and had a similar experience where it took at least half an hour to get the food and since then I vowed to only ever go straight to the supercharger get the car plugged in and then walk to get food. If the food is too far away then sometimes I just ride my onewheel to go get the food and bring it back to the family at the car. I am mostly speaking for long distance road trips where we are traveling 12-18 hours of travel in one day and we really cannot afford long delays.

    Bottom line - if you enjoy road trips in an ICE car, you'll enjoy road trips in an EV. If you don't really enjoy them and simply go to your destination as fast as you can to get it over with; an EV isn't going to make it better for you (though, despite yourself, you'll be fresher at your destination).

    I just made the same trip to FL from NJ. FSD was a game changer. Saw a lot of cyber trucks especially by chargers. FSD was great but there were times it would hug the yellow line, which is hair raising when concrete barriers are like a foot off the yellow line. So I had to take over a lot in those situations. Weird because it would only happen when it was open on my right side. When a truck or other vehicle was in the right lane, the CT would move away from the yellow line toward the vehicles in the right lane. The opposite of what I would want. So basically it would bias itself toward the potentially dangerous objects.

    We're on year 4 of being a Tesla-only household and the network opening in our area has started proving really problematic on holidays. The three superchargers we rely on are all now choked with Rivians and F-150s, which have much longer charge times. I'd be happier waiting to charge if there was some kind of formal system, but you're just relying on everyone being civil during the most politically charged time in decades. Not a great situation. Also Tesla's wipers have never been worse and FSD finally being great makes it absolutely infuriating. We desperately need a bluetooth IR sensor or some such to help.

    The biggest problem with EV road trips I have seen is if you have to be somewhere at a certain time. EVs force you to stop and if you hit traffic a couple times you can’t compensate for that by stopping fewer times or shortening your stops. In EVs you still have to stop for a set amount of time no matter what. Other than that I agree EV road trips are better unless you are towing or in my case have a bike on the back of the car, it just kills your efficiency.

      We have free supercharging so it's not a great comparison for us, but yes supercharging is expensive and it's quite disappointing. It's something I complain about on X. I wouldn't read too much into the median efficiency difference - so much data has been collected from the Cybertruck since March 2024 that the early calculation is likely quite inaccurate in comparison to recent trips.

    How on earth do you drive 13 hours in one day with two children? I know you said they are more capable but…. I don’t get it. I tried two days of 4 hours driving per day with my 4 year old and it was not good. Way too restless. What do they do in the car for 13 hours? I really want to know.

      It's a mix of like coloring books, i spy, cartoons, and kid tablet games lol they definitely do get restless at points but they make it through. The charger stops help too, every time we stop I tell them they need to jump as much as possible lol and then they jump the entire time outside of the car instead of walking

    Chris, its some people cant or wont... its cool. I believe the person freedom that allows for this is more important. It is clear that EV's are the superior drive train and will not only continue to improve but will replace ice vehicle as their use case capabilities converge. I suspect if the msm which screams the sky is falling regarding climate change would stop peddling their myriad of lies regarding EV's, the transition would at least be less contentious. Thanks for the video which is about exactly what the title indicates.
