Bose 802 Design and Rating

- After repairing another Bose 802, I decided to run a speaker impedance curve for a single speaker and the entire phase array. The result of the single speaker were expected, but the entire phase array produced an unexpected result. After a bit of research and doing a few calculations, I determined that the readings were right. I share the explanation with you in this video.

really good video ! thanks for this!
great video sir,im a HIFI nut,my buddy is also a HIFI nut,he rebuilt bose 901s, offered me a deal $275 but i bought the other speakers he had, towers with KLH speakers on top,hes a speaker genius,he has a nice audio system, hes rocking 2 carver mono block amps,26 years old, carver went out years ago i read
Great video… lots of good info. Thx much.
thank you
wow...
If you're boosting 15kHz by 17dB and 10kHz by 15dB then maybe they should have put a tweeter where the Bose logo is. An Eminence APT80 would do nicely. What's particularly worrying is the 14dB boost at 60Hz. It's a good way to get speakers making farting noises as you turn up the volume.
the system is based on the 901 the prototypes in the 70's of the 802 were just 901 where the used the back at the front.
Very informative video! However, the wirewrap around the units is incredibely stupid in a PA speaker in my opinion, also the wires to some units are extremely short.
I have a set of NOS 802-III with the Sound Space Controller. SP-24
These sound amazing for the size! Love them for vocals and my studio tracks.
I have also owned 2 sets of 802-II's.
BTW thanks for explaining these are not a cheap to produce set of junk speakers that many have trashed over the years. There is no internal one shot fuse in the series III.
Please do a review of the series III and the differences.
Like your video on this subject!
Also to get the best out of these speakers is to use a amplifier that's more powerful. I use a power soft m30d which is 1500 watts a side at 4ohms. 2 Bose 802's per channel with the dials on the amp turned half way and it drives them nice without any clipping. Oh and that's with the Bose controller as I use the Bose 302's to go with these speakers.
At last someone who knows what he's talking about.great explanations.incidently mine fell over on a stand 5 years ago landed face down. The driver frames will crack and break. if they were metal it would of survived...but I replaced the 3 damaged drivers!!!.....Why because they were date stamped 1988 on magnets, baught them 1994 at £900 pounds a pair, still using them at date of comment.PAID FOR THEMSELVES YEARS AGO....SAY NO MORE
best video ever for bose lovers
Outstanding info! Great explanation! I bought an 802 Series II with the 802-C System Controller from a Church sale. The speakers and the controller look great and near new. The only thing I see wrong is, get this, *It looks like someone didn't have the proper cable connectors...so, they drilled a 1/4" hole in the back to connect a "speaker wire"*???
It does not have the 802-E Active Eq but since I haven't paid anything at all for the speakers, stands and controller, I don't mind to spend $99 on a used one one from Ebay and then pick up some cables. I plan to power it with a Sony STR-DE698 Stereo Surround Sound Receiver (250 watts per channel) *Does this sound ok? Any advise? Thanks in advance!*
+OnePointSix12 The Sony should be just fine. Great price too.
I recently received a pair of Panaray 802 series III from an estate sale, which I now wish to sell. My dilemma is, I currently lack the proper equipment to test them. Is there any way I can connect them somehow to a typical home stereo to just test for sound, even with incompatible connectors?
+en4cer450 You could make a cable that connects from the speaker speakon connectors to your stereo. They should work with no problems.
If I get some 802 Mk2's with no controller could you help me a bit to tune them or will they still sound great just plugged straight into an amp with no equalisation?
They will still sound great without the controller.
DeepBlueHarp Okay so would you recommend the 802s because I just want great sound for music
Very interesting information. Question: Can you connect two Bose 802 Series 2 in series? That being amp to Bose 1 in and out to Bose 2 speaker on. Therefore have four speakers, two on each side of the power amp. Thanks. JimE
+Jim E Yes, you can put daisy chain 2 speakers in series as you mentioned.
+DeepBlueHarp Thanks. Your reply is appreciated. JimE
Nice video, as always!
That´s why bose always refused to send their "speakers" to any (pro)audio-related magazine, as they would bust them, by the first SPL plot measure....;)
Guess why you need that "equalizer" as this 802 is simply "crap", sorry but true...
Simply look at the frequency response of that "equalizer" some whooping *+14dB* at 60Hz...daFuq..?? If your amp could handle these +14dB you simply pop the cones off that tiny speakers....not to speak about the foam type surroundings which are not made for excursions like that for a long time...they usually give up very soon....wear out...build in by bose...nice thing;) keeps the customer a sustained payer;)
Next is, these 802 have no hi-end...look at this "equalizer" again +17dB at 15kHz....are you kidding me...? I would love to see a SPL vs. frequency plot at 1 watt and rated (!!) wattage....
Not to mention that phase alignment/distortion problems when mouting mulitple speakers in different angles and also different distances to the listener at the same time....a phase plot would look like a woodland....;)
I worked in the pro audio sound-reinforcement field for years, and guess what? We never ever installed one single 802..."Loud is out - sound by Bose" that´s what we used to say...
my technic english its not good, i love bose 802 and 901 i try to buy a pair of these, i have a big answer about controller or EQ, i undestarnd te controller or EQ give more efficient sound to tue speaker, but, the answer it from 1 to 10, how much better its te sound quality with controller or EQ ?
Hi! The controller unit will place the correct load on the Bose 802. That will make it operate as designed by Bose and have better sound quality. However, I have played with it and without it. In a live rock band session, the controller is not required. If your band has string instruments, then it is something to consider because you need more high note fidelity.
get answer and quiqly, , i understand very good, but if i have an external EQ analog or digital and if i SET all the parameters rich DB in ich point frequency its the same?
This is a harder question. I suggest setting the EQ flat (the same) across all the frequencies. Then, adjust each frequency band for the music being played. Set the EQ for the type of music. I suggest getting SpecScope for your smart phone to help with setting the EQ on the sound board.
great! good answer think you very much!
The series I were power hungry. I know. I carried that 100lb Bose powered mixer before. The series II are far more efficient.
my answer is if i use ONLY 802 or 901 ALONE
