    I’ve got a few of those that my Dad had. Great speakers! Wish they still made them like this.
    The worlds lowest bass singer, the late J.D. Sumner, used to be asked by Bose representatives to test out the low frequency capacity of their speakers. He would bust them until they got it right. 😄

    Enjoyable video, I have some 802's and they sound really good I think, especially for their size. As you said the EQ unit is essential, I use a 400w Yamaha amplifier to drive mine. Very low distortion at high levels is very impressive.

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think Bose did a great job... and all those years ago! Expensive, yes, but the proof is, mine are still sounding detailed and musical (with repairs to the driver surrounds) decades later. The monstrous Bose 1800 Power Amplifier is still quiet and powerful, and just works purposefully, decade after decade! I know one day it will die, but hey! Value for money - and the value includes having a great sound.

    It would of been worth pulling the internal filter out when you did the re-cone job You can get the foam out through the ports!! (it's two large caps on a bit of board which direct the high end to certain drivers to help comb filtering- and a poly ptc switch (this basically increases it's internal resistance if it gets to hot through to much power) Your series 1's have a little lamp which acts as a compression device-element glows and resistance increases giving higher resistance across the drivers at power limit. It's true they are very hard to blow. Anyone who poo poo's the 802s will not when they are used outside for vocal use.They are phonominal- in the vocal range.still up there with any same size cab of today.I use a yamaha cp2000 which im told is not powerful enough...ummm. that sodding eq .Excelent excellent review.Mine are stamped 1987.great job sir

    A brand called sonitas sold by Blue Arran in the uk is a direct replacement. Bose could of but higher spl drivers in but that xauses other issues

    Pretty good evaluation. Cabinets should never add extra sounds due to resonant. You can best knock around the cabinet with knuckles to get a feel how well it holds true. What I don't like about typical PA cabs, is weight and dispersion. You cant sit close to a cab with larger woofer and horn, without getting a hot spot hurting my ears around 2-3 kHz. You can get some pretty good small switching amps these days and you can use a separate DSP EQ. The main advantage of not having to use the Bose stuff. The low end is designed to work down to about 50 Hz, and you would need a sub to get lower.

    I repair these if you have any questions. If you shim the coil while refoaming, the cone will be centered. Yes Parts Express sells knock off replacements. You can also get the cloth surrounds if you don't like foam.

  • @ssgeek4515

    There is a internal capacitor network that directs hi freq to specific drivers to maintain dispersion. There is also a ptc poli switch which if to much power is pushed in(voltage) this compinant heats up and its resistance increases causing a dampling effect protecting in theory the drivers. Because they srivers are very insufficient you need nassive power to maintain the voltage as its the amps psu current supply that keeps the audio from dipping. This is componded by low efficiency of the 802 hence you need a monster amp. A single pair on stands in a field with a goid mic are still Phonominal in the vocal range even after 40 years design

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the info and yes, I agree. In the vocal range, they hold up today and with great dispersion. I have heard them sound awful, and always supected a feeble power amp and / or lack of EQ module.

    great sound sir . is there any bose 801 speakers that do not require a bose equalizer ? i thought there was one . would you recomend one pair of these for a living room in a house ?

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of any that don't use the eq, but there may be. Much as I admire the 802s for live PA, I don't think I'd use them in a living room. I think a better full range sound could be had by buying second hand hi-fi speakers and they would cost less. They wouldn't play as loud and be as tough as the 802s though.

    • @AntonBrowne

      Sorry to hear that. They are quite simple devices, so it's probably something quite simple... I hope. I had a cab go down, and because all eight drivers are wired one to another, if one fails, the whole cab goes down. With mine, there was a bad solder joint on just one of the drivers. The part where the flexible wire from the cone, meets the blade where the connecting wire is wrapped around - apparently, this is fairly common on well-used older units. It's a bit time consuming but you could loosen and lift out all eight drivers and carefully inspect the wire connections to the blades on each driver, and also the solder joint for the flexible wire from the cone. Look for bad connections, cracks in the wire or solder etc. Good luck.
      p.s. If I remember correctly, I think I tested each driver by connecting the output of a low wattage amp, with clips to each driver directly. On one of them I couldn't hear any sound, and that was the one causing the problem. A quick re-solder and Pray-hesto!

    Why dont you just get a modern dsp amp instead?

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Cause I've already got this I guess, and my experience of some modern stuff is that it doesn't last very long, can't be repaired economically and doesn't have real world welly! I'm sure some of it is great but I guess I'll use this until it fails, or I can't carry it anymore!!!

    • @Newschoolcovers
      @Newschoolcovers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntonBrowne There are definitely good sounding amps that are built modularly and are therefore also very good to repair. If you want something by reputation, for example, the T304 from Powersoft. A little cheaper are the power amps from Lab Gruppen from the FP series, although these have no DSP. I'm honestly not a fan of the Bose802s, but I was running them with an FP10000 at the time. I do not like the construct that the drivers in the high frequencys interfere. For your gigs, however, they are still quite nice.

    • @jareddavis8970
      @jareddavis8970 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Newschoolcovers Idk if it just me but the only room I have ever used 802s in to me they don't sound very good. This might be due to the fact that the mixing position is almost 100ft from the speakers and 25ft in the air. I mean they have been installed in the same church for 30+ years. The church that has them installed is still running them as of the posting of this comment. My biggest thing is the lack of lows...and yes they have the controller with the high and low cut push switches. They use a Samson amp from the last 20 years with no DSP. I am quite sure that if a DSP like a DBX DriveRack 260 was put in you could make them sound 100%...then again DSP can do many things.

      I imagine, and would hope that these days you can get better for less but bear in mind... I assembled the rig in 1993 from ten year old secondhand parts (speakers & power amp) with then new mixer, reverb and equalizer. I used it last month for a concert and the 30/40 year old rig was great and still has re-sale value. I reckon that isn't bad in the long run.
