  • Shop Tour - On a Budget - Simple but Practical. G'day folks and welcome my workshop tour. Unlike a lot of other workshop tours on TH-cam, mine is very basic which is totally fine for the needs that l have and l'm sure a lot of other beginning woodworkers would be in the same boat. This video also comes with the ADDED BONUS of a walk down memory lane where l revisit some old projects just to see how they're holding up after all these years.
Check it out and let me know what you think 👍😁

New subscriber, for a few months now. I really enjoy your videos and I definitely learn something new every time. Reminds me of Robin Williams a little bit😍😀 I live in a mobile home and I don't have a workshop yet, but I'm thinking of 10ft X 20ft. In our county we can build 10 x 10 ft. without a permit. What I was thinking of doing is guiding it very close to the house and make it accessible from the house only so no doors open at the exterior, eliminating easy access to possible vandals. 2nd section only access from 1st section. Any advice or thoughts. It's going to be mainly for woodworking. Small craft fair type stuff. I have access to pallets so I really enjoy your videos using pallet wood😍😀😃. Thanks for sharing your talent, thoughts and videos, Rodney P.S. Aussie Rules Football is incredible, I first saw it on the TV in 1979. Thanks again.

G'day Rodney, sounds like you've got some pretty exciting plans there! Good idea re no door to the outside...that should give you some piece of mind. The big thing is dust retention especially if you dont have any ventilation to the outside. Check out videos on good old youtube that relate to that topic. There's plenty of smart guys out there with some nifty ways of nullifying the dust issue. Glad you like the vids and thanks for the sub! Good to see that you've experienced our game too...it's amazing 👊🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺😁 Have a good weekend mate 👍

I’m just getting started in this woodworking stuff in an attempt to reinvent myself in retirement. Your personality/Aussie has been the shot in the arm in my confidence to get moving. At 63 years old, it’s been a long time since high school wood shop. Couple that aspect with the expensive tools needed, it seemed daunting. Your testament is proofing me wrong. I’m really happy to find that your beginners list won’t break the bank. One more thing - I also have a bit of comradeship with your surfing background, Nat Young comes to mind, as I’m a California transplant living in North Carolina now. Mate mine’s smaller than yours... by 1m in each direction. For outside timber I use Organoil decking oil or outdoor furniture oil that you can just reapply as necessary without sanding. I’ve actually also had success using 50+ sunscreen on small stuff, like really successful once it’s soaked in on a hot day.

Pretty squeezey Luis....you do well to do what you do.👍👍 Thanks for the Organoil suggestion...l just need something that doesn't rub off onto the nice white sheets when it's a little windy. Started 3 years ago with just a hacksaw and a cordless drill. Made a lot of things. Still don't have any table saw ,router, sander etc. For any newbie I'd recommend them to start with hand tools. Slowly buy things only as you need them.
Though I'd say a good drill is a must. You can have every other tool manual but drill should be a cordless one.

    How? And I do mean how the f**k do you manage in such a space? Don’t you spend hours a week moving kit around? !!!! S O C C E R ??
Great to see the historical work and how well it’s all held up, because I don’t think a lot of the “work” on these home change shows will last a season?? How near the beach are you Uncle K?
One item that’s held up very well and you didn’t mention is you Uncle K. Yup thought that a couple of weeks back and forgot to mention to you, seriously man you’ve done well either through effort or good genes!
Now this 4 years old……and you have much more gear now and seem to have space? And you film in there as well. I repeat how the f**k do you do it??
Great video and from a new (at least to me) angle that has caused me to think about my need to have all I need before I begin woodworking, maybe I can start sooner??? Already panicking
    Good day Uncle K

I know...it is small but you just have to make it work and yes l do find myself moving stuff around ALL the time!......Now the "SOCCER" thing.....what can l say.....l'm in Australia! 😂 Cheers regarding the good genes thing....the outside has held up ok but the inside is a different matter.....got a few things going on there that can make life a little tricky at times.
Thanks for watching mate and you're right, you don't need much to get stated 👍
      Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺

Onya Knackers, you up in Queensland somewhere?
If you built your house, why on earth didn't you build yourself a bigger workshop?!? ;-)
Great video. I'm just starting out my woodworking journey and all of the videos I'm watching use thousands of dollars of kit which has me constantly on the Amazon, Total Tools, Bunnings, Timbecon, Hare and Forbes, and Carbatec websites looking to spend the hard earned.
You made me realise that I don't need to spend heaps of coin on a thicknesser, jointer, etc but I reckon a table saw is just about a necessity due to the flexibility of what it can make easier, not just rip cuts.
    Cheers, knackers!

Thanks Adam! Mate l would have loved to have built a bigger shop but space was a premium on our little block 😢 Location wise we're on the Mid North Coast of NSW...and you're right, you don't need a truckload of gear but the table saw is almost a necessity. I'm mostly on 18v Makita for cordless tools that I tend to move around with a lot like drill/drivers, planer, SDS drill, multitool etc but for corded tools like my mitre saw, orbital sander, and sheet sander, I'm using Ryobi. I have a DeWalt table saw, and an Ozito track saw. I'm using 18v hikoki framing and finish nail guns, and a Milwaukee 18v trim router. I use battery adaptors to allow me to use Makita batteries with hikoki and Milwaukee cordless tools. It's a bit of extra bulk but it works for me. Basically, buy the best tool for the job based on your budget and don't be afraid to mix and match.

I really appreciate your attitude, wit, sense of humor, bench setup, tool choices, and the overall quality of the video. I detest the background soundtrack. For me, and others, I'm guessing, the background track is a deal breaker.
Henry Fisher was an old timey blacksmith and our neighbor. He lived in a 12 x 16 shack, that is still standing, on his son's farm. He got up around 4am every day. He would round up the 20 or so dairy cows his family milked.
Afterwards, on occasion, he would come by our farmhouse for a spot of breakfast and a cup of coffee.
Henry had a bit of a shake in his hands so he'd hold his cup w both hands.
One morning he came by and me mum put a cup of coffee on the kitchen table for him.
I was about 12 at the time. I really liked old Henry.
So, he gets hold of the cup, raises it to his lips and takes a sip.
Two things are important to note here. Me mum was a bit touchy about her culinary skills. Henry always spoke his mind. Although he barely broke five feet tall and 120 lbs, he was no shirker; all his teeth were gone and his jaw had been broken a few times while shoeing horses. He was one of the few who dared speak clearly to me mum.
"Dorothy (that was her name), when I want coffee, I want coffee and when I want water, I want it clean."
That's the way I like my videos too.
Henry Fisher was one of my childhood heroes. I loved that man. He let me help in his shop on occasion. What you do in your small shop is important. Thanks for reading.

G'day Bloke. I am a total newbie DIY woodworker (Sometime) and would like to know if a biscuit joiner is preferable to using dowels? (I have a doweling kit) It seems the "Festool" mob reckon you should, but with the amount of projects (both successful and unsuccessful) at this time I dunno. Your input would be appreciated. Plus I am not absolutely flushed with coin!!

Mate....dowels are stronger than biscuits and the machine you're talking about from Festool ( l think they call it a domino machine...could be wrong?) is a totally professional machine and the price matches that. If you're just doing the top of a table or something like that the biscuit joiner is fine. I've used it on. many projects and it's worked well. The good thing is that you can pick them up reasonably cheaply. Hope that helps! 👍😁

Imagine using that wine rack as a book rack. LOL. What a shame. 😁 beautiful workshop and I love your setup for your tools. I've apparently missed a lot of your videos. So I have a lot of catching up to do. I've already done 2 of your projects and they don't look too bad. Not quite as nice as yours But I'm also not a carpenter. Thanks Uncle Knacker!!

Give me a bell when you're in NZ, and we'll head out to the work shop (That has a bit too much junk floating around in it) for some beers and project builds. Great vid, mate. I'm not loyal when it comes to brands, though my main cordless is makita and so reliable. It came in a set with an impact driver which is a great little tool too (do you have one.
A customer had a tool clearance just before last xmas. Bought a ton of stuff for £320. Sold a lot of heavy industrial clamps and vices on and got most of my money back and still left with a pillar drill, table saw, belt sander, grinding wheels, Bosch router and table saw, plus loads of hand tools
I'm buying a mid sized wood lathe in September to have a go at some turning. A band saw is on my list too.
    Got a 10 x 12' shed to work in.

I’d love to switch to makita, but the amount of time I have to do woodworking doesn’t justify the price. I got a free makita 18v drill and 2 batteries but no charger. But I already have a ryobi drill, impact driver and finish nailer with charger. I guess I gotta stick with ryobi for now.

I've got a little garage under my main roof I keep my car in, but I'm trying to work out a way so I can use it as a workshop when I want to, then pack things up and put the car back in again. hopefully will get that sorted in the next few months. I use Bosch tools, after lsing all my gear, too long to go into, I slowly built my collection back up again and decided Bosch was going to be my power tools of choice. you do pay a wee bit more but its worth it. enjoying watching all your videos and getting ideas for things I can do too. 🙂
