      @@kravenamg2138is correct.
      Not only that but large coils can weigh 40,000-60,000 lbs. There's not many places that can unload a coil that heavy with the eye to the sky. You wouldn't want to go cut the straps or unwind a coil laying on it's side... Then there's the problem of trying to maneuver a coil on it's side into a coil handling machine so that it can be unrolled as production needs it.
      Thru the eye is the quickest and safest way to transport and unload beasts. Hauling them suicide makes them easier to secure because the chains are going thru the eye vs going over the coil Hauling them shotgun requires a lot more chains due to the direct method of chaining. A 3/8 70 grade chain has a work load limit of 6,600 lbs. That same chain securing indirectly is 13,200. Shotgun requires it to be chained down directly from the coil to the flatbed. Can't go thru the eye and secure to the other side of the vehicle. Direct method also requires chain angles to be close too 60°. Using the correct grade and number of chains equals a safe and secure load. A safe and secure load ain't going anywhere regardless of what happens.
      Biggest mistake I see drivers making when hauling anything on a flatbed is their chains or straps are on the outside of the rub rail, not using pockets properly...
      This is why NYS requires drivers to have a Metal Coil Endorsement...

    In Germany, steel coils are transported on specially equipped trucks. Their trailers have a trough in which the coil can be transported upright. The so-called coil eye, the hole in the middle, faces the direction of travel. The coil can therefore not slide in any direction when properly secured.
    Manufacturers of these trailers for example:
    Krone Trailers, Germany
    Berger ecotrail, Austria
    Kässbohrer, Germany
    Meusburger, Germany

      It is also possible to transport coils flat, but this is only done here in Germany if the coil has been processed beforehand.
      Before processing, for example, the coil has a width of 600 millimeters. It is then unrolled, cut lengthwise in a machine and turned into 15 coils with a width of 40 millimeters. This is then placed flat on a pallet using a crane and can then be transported in this condition.
      This is safer than transporting it standing up, because the support surface is much too small compared to the height.

    Back in the day when I used to drive OTR Flatbed, the option was given to the truck driver, to have the coils loaded 'Shotgun' or 'Suicide'. All the trucks shown in this video are loaded 'Suicide' and it's plain why that term is used. Suicide loaded coils are a LOT easier to chain up, but deadly if they break loose in an accident. Shotgun loaded coils are a pain to chain up, but tend to fall forward flat and won't crush the cab of the truck in an accident. I always had mine loaded SHOTGUN.

      I actually use to haul these, and they are perfectly fine on a flatbed for hauling. What happened in the video was a failure on the driver to secure his load properly. While a special trailer might be ideal, it isn't practical for any company that hauls more than just coils. So long as the securement is done properly, hauling it on a flatbed is perfectly safe.

    Flat bed driver here. Steel coils are shiped in the manner in which they are loaded. Suicide.. side ways. Shotgun front to back. Eye in the sky. Up and down. One chain for every 5K pounds. The average steel coil weighs 44K. That means I would be required to put 8 chains. Then I put 1 extra for my mom and another extra for God. Total of 10 chains. The coil gets loaded on a bed of 2 4x4 solid oak timbers with rubber mats sitting 6 hard steel coil racks. Then I cover that with a tarp and tie down the tarp the a couple dozen bunjy cords and two 6 inch wide straps to make it look good and tight.

      I've been delivering them from specialty steel since 1988.. they mostly put them on single axel trucks class b and they're put into shelves, depending on weight it's either 3-4 and most states wants you to deliver between 10pm-5am to Ohio to get sandblasted. Strapping is mandatory on everything, when put on trailer.. the company won't allow you to put the 40-59,000. On trailer only up to 20,000 each no more then 4 you also must show permit

    • @9th-Circle
      @9th-Circle 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@phillblack4455 It's mostly for securement purposes and safety. Loading them crooked could cause weight imbalance to one side or the other, or an imbalance in weight to different sections of the trailer overall. Plus it would be far more difficult to secure them from side-to-side and forward/backward movement.
      Suicide (eye to the side) is the typical loading because it's the easiest to secure, but I prefer shotgun (eye to the front) loading personally because its more effective in restricting movement/load shift.
      Properly loaded and secured, a coil loaded with either method isn't going to move at all.

    • @garryambrose
      @garryambrose 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phillblack4455 well, it’s because of how they load or unload. They use either a crane or forklift. Forklifts for ‘skidded coils’or eye to the sky they call it is only loaded by a forklift. You have to secure the load. If you're using sufficient chains and blocking applied correctly its not an issue. Coils are not always transported standing up (widowmaker). Coils are regularly transported laying flat (eye to the sky). it depends on the type of material, its weight, and the requirements of the receiver.

    • @Ricra1000
      @Ricra1000 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It depends on the type of material to change from upright to eye to the sky, Small thick unpacked coils can be transported e2sk because magnets and forklifts can handle this material. The norm is upright due to the fact that not all factories, shipping yards and has tilters, secondly you need a massive magnet to remove a coil from a trailer to a tilter. Thirdly, coils are normally oiled and packed, electric magnets tend to damage the packing if coils is handled eye to the sky. As me i have seen a magnet pull a coil telescope and even bucket. It cost a lot to rewind the coil and rewinding lines damage the material.

    I used to drive OTR flatbed. One such run was to haul a single aluminum coil from Alcoa in Lancaster, PA to Precision Strip in Minster, OH. That single coil always weighed 53k pounds and the rig was set up to be as light as possible to allow for the load, including very limited fuel. The run paid well, but I do not miss chaining and tarping those bastards. My rule for chains: 2 more than required for weight. I've seen the aftermath of a runaway coil. No thank you. The only exception like you said is small under 10k pound coils, only because each chain binder and steak pocket is good for 8000 pounds of securement. It's not atypical for drivers to haul 22-25 ton coils. I regularly haul them between Iowa and Minnesota. Most of the time they end up going to manufacturing plants like John Deere or Ford.

    Chains, straps, and cleats ( blocks) on either side. Just as a little added measure.

  • @oldollie
    @oldollie 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The reason why they're so tight is that they're rolled while they're hot; the metal then shrinks as it cools greatly increasing the tension. .

    • @timmaybach8158
      @timmaybach8158 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That only applies for hot rolled coils. The thinner grades, often used in car manufacturing, are usually cold rolled coils. Those used to be hot rolled coils that went through pickling and a cold rolling phase, usually followed by annealing and/or galvanizing.

    That’s why some if not most flatbed/ steel haulers (in America at least) will have this thing called a headache rack on there truck (sometimes a trailer might have one installed) it’s to back and hopefully stop cargo from going thru your truck injuring or killing you (on trucks it also has the ability to hold chains and binders.
