- At UFC in Washington DC Overeem vs Rozenstruik, Alistair Overeem suffered a cut to his lip that looked to be one of the worst in the history of the sport. In this video I'll give my reaction to this cut and why I think it is so severe, particularly due to the complex anatomy related to cuts around the lips like this.

Yeah
There have been some fairly bad eyebrow cuts, like Nate Diaz, but none worse than this come to mind.

*Diaz's eyebrow cut was really nasty, a couple of shots more and that thing would've fall off.*
It’s a nasty cut for sure but in terms of worst I’d say Marvin Eastman’s head wound from his fight with Vitor Belfort back in the day was far worse

Overeem saw that extended right from like 10 kilometers lol and still had his guard down even after the first punch lol.

The guy’s been champion before and has been in the game for ages. If this cut wasn’t reason enough to retire he should just so the new prospects don’t get overshadowed by him.

Damn is that even a cut man? I can’t tell where Overeem’s lip ends and where his mouthpiece starts. Wish him the best with his recovery, Jairzinho went crazy in that last 30. Props to the ref as well. At first I thought he kinda screwed Overeem by calling the fight so quickly after he dropped...then I saw the lip.

As a fan of the reem, he's out of his prime and it shows, he is not as anywhere close to being aggressive as he was in pride or k1. Plus his strength isnt there either. In the beginning of the fight he threw that hook and got rozenstruik good and it was one of those punches that knocked reems previous opponents out cold and the punch didnt even look like it hurt rozenstruik at all. As much as I love the reem, when its time to go it's time to go. He's a legend and had a great career. Dont ruin that legacy

Why?
That punch generated so much force in due to the hands being wrapped with tape and protected by a glove. If not , the hands would break with the impact so he wouldn't apply so much force to each punch. Contrary to popular belief, the usage of gloves and tapping in MMA makes the sport more dangerous as it allows for the fighters to punch harder without the drawbacks of damaging your own hand.

You would think the mouthguard would protect from injuries like this. The lip from sliding over the hard and sharp edges of the teeth
this is why fighters wear mouthguard.
Imagine the sheer brute force that Rozenstruik's punch must have to essentially punch through the mouthguard, hit the teeth and retain enough momentum to cut his lip off. Yikes. . Alistair Overeem has officially claimed the BMF title (doesn't need the belt. He is still the BMF)

Adrenaline for sure for the first fifteen minutes, but Overeem is a tough veteran so he probably handled it better than the average person.

I hear you talking about the lip hitting against the teeth to rip as it did, but wasnt he wearing a mouthpiece?? Not sure if I missed something or if it had been knocked out.
The face has a terrific blood supply and heals rather well. Cosmetically I think he's going to be okay. At the most, he might get a scar that resembles the one Joaquin Phoenix has on his upper lip. Personally, I would be worried about competing again with the reduced tensile strength of the scar tissue. A similar and maybe even a less powerful punch might just tear it up again. Gotta feel bad for Overeem. He's been on the receiving end of some gruesome knockouts. The one against Ngannou and now this. Wish him a fast recovery.
It's interesting how well the body can heal under the right conditions. I've seen before and after pictures of people with severe facial lacerations from car accidents and the wounds look horrible. 6 months later when healed, the scars are a very fine line and almost invisible. The fighters are so tough that this kind of injury is just no big deal to them.

Doc! I have a question. Several years ago i went out to party in a club. I felt good the whole night (i dont drink alcohol) the only thing i drank that night was water and a redbull. When i came home at 4 in the morning i went to bed and all of a sudden began shaking like cazy..i had the shivers..dont know if that is the correct english term. It lasted for about 3 hours..i couldnt even get out of bed or talk normally because i was shaking like crazy. In the morning i felt better pretty quick and after i ate something i was feeling normal again. Its weird that it came so quickly and went away quickly as well. Could it be that someone put something in my rebull?. Or maybe i ate something bad the day before? ..i dont think so because i didnt have to puke and my stomach felt normal as well. Just was shivering like crazy for a few hours. Maybe lack of sleep?. Its a mysterie to me til this day. Would appreciate your opinion...

Frank ESM no way, I’ve had a similar lip injury, definitely not as bad. No way he needs to retire he’ll be fine, just have an ugly scar. Looks a lot worse than it actually is in terms of long term damage.

My only question is, I understand that the lip can tear in situations like this after force is applied while being pushed against the teeth, however we wear mouth guards when we fight. Idk if overeems was knocked out of his mouth prior to this punch but I doubt since I believe the hit before the big right was just a jab. These guys are fucking warriors. This injury will not affect Overeem's career at all. He was ready to keep fighting even after getting his mouth blown out by the punch.

I seen the cut before I seen the fight and when I was watching the fight I was like when the fuck did this cut happen? I was fucking blown away it happened in the last seconds. I thought it might have been a thumbnail that cut him but after the replay it looks like it was just the force of the blow!!

When I was 4 I flipped over my bike handle bars onto a bunch of small rocks and I ended up losing teeth and had a cut just like his but directly under my nose and all the way up to my nose. I needed plastic surgery and the surgeon was so good the scar was completely gone 5 years later. I feel like I got pretty lucky that the doctor did such a good job.

Hello Doctor Brian, you dont watch UFC or Martial arts, do you? Asking cause at 1:31 you talk about "Pressing up against the teeths" ... they have mouthguards in, its pressing against the mouthguard. Also , his jaw was not broken... Idk what it is. Some people can take a massive beating and not getting jaw fractured... some people break their jaws every fight (almost). Its genetics(?) Overeem to my understanding have not broken his jaw once. He is also a long time veteran with over 50 bouts under his name in MMA and K-1.
your whole explanation is lip being cut by teeth, but fighters wear mouth guards for this very reason.

Mouth guards are supposed to help prevent this sort of thing. His lip should not have been “shearing against the sharp edges of teeth”. I’m more curious about this issue. Improperly sized fitted mouth guard? Fighter relaxed the guard at a bad time? Improper use? There has to be a story here.
