Salvage Material Repurposed Into Trailer Fenders

  • Rusted, discarded sheets of 16 gauge mild steel are formed into a set of fenders for one particular trailer being built. HOWEVER, this style of fender can easily be adapted for use with any style trailer with the wheels outside the trailer frame. Change dimensions to suit your trailer and wheels and if its a tandem....just increase the length of the fenders to encompass both wheels. Without a sheet metal brake such as was used in this fabrication, a heavy vice and pair of angle irons can be used to to hold the thicker material. Once the material is clamped tightly it can be bent with a large rubber mallet wielded by controlled taps or swings of the mallet. To bend the short way bends, Two 'C' clamps and a propane torch to heat the area to be bent can be implemented. Heat it to a low red and fold it by hand with welding gloves, tapping on the backside of the bends with the mallet. Easy peasy. Well, it may take a bit of effort, but anything worth making is worth a little work.
    I decided to make this a 'stand alone' video and not part of the sawmill trailer build series because these fenders CAN be somewhat universal. All you have to do is decide on a different way to mount the fender with welded brackets. The installation on this particular trailer turned out to be quite unique by using small 'U' bolts to go around the 5/8'' truss-bent rods of the construction bar joists with the fender being reinforced by using squares of 1/4'' plate on the inside of the fender wells. They were then cut off and peened over to minimize loosening in the future. Of course if you have seen any of the sawmill trailer build, you have seen the finished product long before today.
    Hopefully today's video, though not of the 'how to' variety, may in fact give the viewer an idea of the route to follow if the decision is made to do a pair of DIY fenders for their trailer. Just observe the technique and improve it for yourself to make it your own.

    Glad you explained capacity on the brake. I'm surprised how many tin benders out there who don't know the reason for the angle iron stiffener that bolts to the apron. Way back in the day I worked for an architectural sheetmetal shop. The old hand brake we used had all the special dies that bolted to the apron to form ogee gutter and other shapes. Wish I had that setup in my shop now!

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That'd sure be a cool setup to have in a retirement shop. I got to play with an electromagnetic 4 foot brake one time. You could set any configuration of material on the 4' magnet, energize it then fold to that configuration. Release the magnet and move the pieces. I would buy one of those today if I found it resonable.

      My kids have all hung out with me in the shop from the time they could walk. I started my oldest daughter disassembling air conditioner parts when she was 7 or 8, then her first job was at the local clock shop at 16 disassembling old clocks for the shop owner and worked up to repairing clocks herself...with limitations to style. She's now a teacher for the gifted students. My middle daughter helped me with every phase of a total house gutting and remodel....drilled all my electric holes, soldered tons of copper water lines....drug concrete...hung duct....helped hang drywall and cabinets...and all the hardwood flooring plus the roofing shingles. Of course the house is hers now. LOL Also runs the backhoe and other tractors. Then my son is just a freaking machine !! Never stops, one project after another....endless. LOL. Can't begin to list the things he does..... So I guess Mike, maybe the kids might have paid a little more attention to me than I did to MY dad...and I apologize for bragging on the kids....No, not really.
