      I really like building fun teams and maxing out my pokemon. I like battling in the game the only problem I have with competitive is I feel like most people when I look at videos are like you have to use these pokemon nothing else and if you don't use these pokemon you will lose every time. I enjoy battling and I want to win sometimes but I hate being forced to used the same pokemon over and over in order to have a chance of winning.

      You can use off meta Pokémon and still win. It’s just key to remember that the meta Pokémon are meta for a reason and when making teams you have to balance your off meta with your super popular picks.

    I realize this video is a little older but I just wanted to add a little of my experience. I’m a mom in my 30s who has played every game on release since red and blue when I was 10. I always spent a ton of time hunting for the best stats and abilities and then EV/IV training them and then never using them. It was just something I did for fun. Then the raids came out in sword and shield and it was one way to use them. Then S/V raids got better but still they get old after a while too. So I finally decided after seeing all these young kids comments on VGC videos that if they just jump in then I should too. I tried SMOGON at first even though I don’t love singles battles. I just messaged everyone I was battling like hey I’m new, I’ve never played competitive I’m here to have fun and learn, if I do anything wrong please tell me and tell me how I can improve. While sure there were some not so great people, the VAST majority were super helpful and were actually happy to help me learn and show me strats and how to use them. There’s tons of discords too for beginners and the amount of people willing to help was refreshing tbh. I don’t know anyone irl who plays competitive, so finding people online who were so welcoming and helpful was one of the best parts of starting out. I haven’t had any time to play recently but I really want to start doubles in S/V. All I can say is that if you find the right discords and the right streamers with a good community you’ll find people more than willing to help you learn. I was pretty intimidated tbh and while Ive been a really dedicated player for over 20 years, I was nervous to get into competitive and ask for help especially from people who seemed like much younger kids. I was surprised and I had a ton of fun. Just make sure you read up on the newest regulation set and rule set, and just communicate. Don’t talk shit, just go in and say hey I’m learning this is for fun and if you could help me and explain why you’re using the moves you are that’d be super helpful and more often than not you’ll have a ton of fun and people willing to show you around. People who have spent a lot of time and effort acquiring a skill are usually happy to show it off and to tell you about what they’re passionate about and help you start your journey too. I wish I’d spent less time being intimidated and jumped in sooner. So do that. I wish I had more time to play and more time to dedicate to it. I wish I’d found out competitive was this fun and welcoming years ago because I would’ve had the time to play and learn. It’s a blast and it gives so much more to your games. And now my poor Pokémon that we’re years or decades old are no longer relegated to just sitting in Pokémon Bank or Home wasting away lol.

    • @KneeckohGaming
      @KneeckohGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for sharing! I do find this to be the case as well. Most people in the community are happy to help learn. I was actually doing a team building stream the other day and someone in chat said “I’m new and want to learn how to team build better” and we stopped the team we were working on and actually walked this person through my team building process. Discords are nice as well, mine constantly has people sending teams and asking for suggestions, as well as just chatting about the game

    Learning about pika analytics and the way you conceptualize your team with "what does this mon not do well again? Let me throw in a counter" was very good. The latter seems obvious but going from a story campaign team mind set off "oh this is a funny theme" to actual competitive was a stark contrast when i battled against my friends in a friendly tournament

    I never thought about doing competitive pokemon. I think for the longest time i didnt really know there WAS competitive pokemon. When Scarlet and Violet came put I finally decided to try and learn competitive. I started this journey in January 2023. I have yet to compete in a league or regionals. But I dod go to a regionals as a spectator in Indianapolis 2024. I loved it. I have a long way to go but the fire is there. This next competitive year I have a goal to participate in one regionals and go to worlds (as a spectator).

    This is a FANTASTIC guide; really well-spoken and encouraging. I've dabbled in competitive for a while, but never fully embraced it. A lot of the EV-training and ruleset stuff was familiar to me, but there were some small takeaways that I really appreciated. The comment about ranked being there to place you against similarly skilled opponents is great. I was nervous to hit the ladder but I think I'll do most of my practice there now!
    Aside from that, I've only ever played singles. Doubles seems pretty daunting. Do you have any advice for starting on doubles?

    • @KneeckohGaming
      @KneeckohGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In terms of getting into doubles think of Pokémon as a team. When team building you always wanna think about Pokémon that can lead well because they compliment one another. Like Indeedee and armarouge, or gholdengo and murkrow. Thinking of Pokémon that compliment one another’s strengths and weaknesses leads to stronger team cores

    I am not sure if this will get a reply. But, I want to say my thoughts on VGC as someone who is new and is trying to get into it. Some advice would definitely help.
    I wanted to take my favorite pokemon and try to get them as far as possible. Build their EVs the best way I can, set up a good team, and possibly be the guy who does okay with niche pokemon. But, VERY QUICKLY, was I crushed and have continued to do so.
    The first team was Torterra, Quaqaval, Gardevoir, Lucario, Armarouge, and Annihilape. My opponents are faster and hit harder despite trying to build my Torterra to be a tank.
    I tried a new team, and a few are not my favorite pokemon, but I had to bite the bullet if I wanted to get my other favorites far. Espeon, Cinderace, Ceruledge, Mudsdale, Hisuian Zoroark, and W/F Urshifu. I paid close attention to builds for these and have them specifically made for double battles. Still got crushed. I am noticing how many people use very common Pokemon that are incredibly powerful.
    I'm not sure if I can do this. There's room for error. No matter how hard I try to pull a strategy or read my opponents, I can't win. It's weird because I find myself doing better in Pokemon Unite, which makes me think I enjoy the IP but not the actual normal game.
    It's depressing how I feel I can't better myself with the Pokemon I grow fond of.

    • @KneeckohGaming
      @KneeckohGaming  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing about building with off meta Pokemon, is that there needs to be only one or two, surrounding by meta stuff that can pick up their slack. Check out the discord if you are interested in getting team building help!

    Been thinking about getting into competitive pokemon, kids ask me a few questions that i had no clue one so ill ask here
    If you go above level 50 can you still use that pokemon to enter tournaments?
    If you ev train a pokemon. But continue to use it. Are the evs safe? Once you have got all 510 i mean. Are they locked in?
    Are there any banned moves or states effects or any rules regarding status effects?

    • @KneeckohGaming
      @KneeckohGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -If you go above 50 you can still use the Pokemon, it will just be reverted to 50 in competition.
      -If you EV train a Pokemon to max it is safe to use because it cannot gain more EVs
      -The banned moves depends on the format. Smogon follows its own rules, but if you are playing the official Pokemon rulesets the only rules are based on the Pokemon actually allowed in play for that ruleset (like Series 2 allows all Paldea Pokemon minus legendaries), you can only have one of a specific Pokemon per team (so you can't have two skeledirge for example), and you can only use an item on one Pokemon (so you can't have two life orbs on a team).
      Hope this helps!

    So I USED to play back when the alolan pokemon first came out, I had actually stopped then due to life. But before that I had played a lot and got really into breeding, was deep in it. Since then, I don't have anything anymore. I'd be starting from scratch. Are we able to access old gen pokemon somehow through the new game or are we stuck with the newest gen only?
    Should someone new (like myself) at this point just get a switch and pick up violet and go from there? I know having the past games had its benefits but I feel so lost now with all of this new stuff.

I played fire/red for the first time with an emulator 11 months ago and had too much fun that I can not explain with words. In my country there is no nintendo region and economy not very good sad to say but I saved up money and got a switch lite with pokemon violet. I just beat the game then bought the dlcs but not dive into them not yet. I'm really interested in competitive side of pokemon. As a newbie I have not memorized the type chart or pokemon names yet. It was really confusing while battling npc trainers sometimes a rock type uses ice move then I die cause of super effective hit etc etc. This game so much detailed I understood that. I'm 25 years old and english not my main language. Is it too late to start learing and joining to pokemon community? If it is not I would like to join your discord and get advices to improve myself.
