When I got back into gaming, Catan was one of the first games that I played and I played it a lot, even online. As time passed, Catan lost favor with me, mostly due to the large impact the dice have on your options to act. Admittedly, cards are random too, but if you draw from a deck, the change for "Card X" increases as cards are drawn from the deck. Not so with dice, the chance for a 1, a 2, etc are always 1 in 6 every roll of the dice. I have played the original, both without and with some of the expansions, and three alternate versions (I think they were Catan in Space, Catan of the Lower Lands [aka the Netherlands and Belgium] and Catan Junior). They didn't add much to the game for me anymore.
I do think that Catan (in general) is a 'good enough' gate-way game. Although I had seen some other games, I hadn't had the chance to play many and this was (one of) the first that I actually got to play with people that were also enthusiastic about gaming. So, even though it's a total pass for me these days, I do think the gaming community as a whole is better off for Catan existing.
    Thanks for the video.

I never liked the trading. Catan was not a gateway game for me at all so I was never crazy about it. If I had played it first, it would not have led me to gaming.

4:54 I think it should be sum of 2 dices, not individual numbers.
