I think there is a lot of ambiguity in the political atmosphere of Brazil and other countries right now, the USA for example. China, Russia, Sweden and France all just had massive revitalizations of their crony/conservative parties. There is probably a common thread in there somewhere, regards political activism and what is easiest to make meaningful change with. But in Brazil's case, the question of corruption is a legitimate and powerful problem because if you can make a solid case that Lula was wrongfully pardoned, then you can also make the case that Lula was wrongfully allowed to run for reelection, and that Brazil has had a fundamental coop or change of power already. These protestors then are just rejecting the coop. Yet, appellate judges are notoriously hard to corrupt, Brazil had every reason on earth to reject such an attempt, and it is actually quite common and legitimate to appeal a criminal case on the sort of basis they appealed on. Its arguable that he really was not acting corruptly. For me that is what it comes down to. Either half of Brazil's parliament is complicit in spreading a dangerous lie about corruption, and really that whole party needs to reform (but this can and usually does take time); or else the federal police, the federal courts, Lula, et al are all conspirators in an actual coop. I find the later hard to accept, but a good look at details in the appeal case would perhaps suffice.
I know you are just expressing yourself openly, as words come to mind, but I think when you were describing your reasons for migrating to italy you cast a lot of shade on brazil in the process: specifically about homicide and crime. Crime is very demographically segregated, just like society, similarly to other post-slavery countries like the USA. On a global level, there are hotspots for crime that radically offset the balance against Brazil. Daily risks in a city like Florianopolis is roughly the same as Milan. Daily risks in São Paulo roughly the same as Chicago. In any of those four cities, you can expect to be safe of violent crime in nearly any place you are likely to wander to yourself (although relatively speaking, Milan is about 100 times safer than Chicago).
This does make me wonder if the crime issue is really fair (in your case) or perhaps just your reaction to a global perception? Did you have no choice but to live near to a crime hotspot in Brazil?

    Oi Marcelo,
Brilliant video, I think you explained the political situation in Brazil perfectly. My wife, who is also Brazilian, and our many Brazilian friends are feeling quite despondent at the moment. Speaking as an outsider looking in, it seems very suspicious the way the election was conducted. It seems to me that the person with the most power in Brazil is Alexandre De Moraes. I hope and pray that things improve quickly in your wonderful country. Enjoy the rest of your time in Italy.
The best of luck to you!

Great video. I am planning to go São Paulo in 2024, hell or high water.
what do i think? as a gringo, it just appears to me that Brasil is alot like the U.S.. its just too big and diverse to apply " one size fits all" legislation. From what I can tell, the culture in the south is completely different from the northeast and amazon.
