Checking in 3/27/23. Have seen this show multiple time and watched until the most recent. I recommend Ac Inc. to everyone, especially if they need a more comedic break from the serious tones in other like campaigns. I miss Aeofel despite the issues, even used his character as the butt end to my own Ac Inc campaign. They inspired my stories and the histories of my worlds and my Players have benefited greatly from it. Thank you!
It’s nice to see these characters still getting love this long later. I got to see two AcqInc shows live at PAX, it was great. They inspired so many other shows.
I’m rewatching all their stuff again, haven’t watched since I was 12 and these were coming out. I remember being excited every year there was a new live show. I love Viari but I miss Aeolfel
I like that Will hates when people call Aeofel 'Al' but when his cloak is covering the t-shirt in the right way the 'A' in Aeofel and the 'L' for lives are the only letters that can be seen
This literally came out when i was 15, now i listen to/watch acquisitions inc daily , it got me into dnd and its crazy that its still going on, it seriously doesn't get enough praise for not only entertainment but as a gateway for people into DnD
Acq. Inc. inspired me to play D&D and many of my first games included shameless ripoffs of things Chris did in these recordings. Before Critical Role, before the McElroys, before streaming/recording actual-play was truly viable as an entertainment medium.
Acquisitions Incorporated got me into D&D. It was right around the time 5e arrived. I'm glad I was introduced to this awesome game. Thank you for all the laughs and inspiration.
1:51:02 Stinky the Zombie hits a massive Hydra with his severed arm. (Like slapping a dragon with a pool noodle) Wil: “Holy crap, this is great! It does 8 necrotic damage, and the target falls prone!”
"I want to do something really awesome and cool" *roll die* "Crap!" Happens all the time, it's more fun watching it happen to other people instead of me for a change.
Yes, this video, Episode 4 of the Acquisitions Incorporated series, is the first actual video event. Episodes 1-3 are all audio podcasts recorded in private without an audience, although their popularity lead to their inclusion as a PAX Prime public event each year.
I don't know about you guys, but I love how Will plays with the group. He's like that friend who shamelessly does embarrassing things and gets the whole group laughing :3
Thank you :) Aeofel is played by Wil Wheaton, who's been Westley Crusher from ST:TNG. Binwin is Scott Kurtz, the creator of the webcomic PVP. Jim Darkmagic and Omin Dran are Mike and Jerry, the twin minds behind the webcomic Penny Arcade, aka Gabe and Tycho.
The first four (really the first three, Season 4 is a Dark Sun one-shot) are full audio podcasts, so there's no video component. I'm in the process of making a semi-animated video for Season 1, 2 and 3 (and maybe 4? less art available)
Revisit from as many years ago as the video is just so dang old. Still love the game! I love to see the progression in the story as much as I love to see the progression of ya'lls lives! Congratulations all! Thank you for the many hours of entertainment! (Not you Kyle)
@@TheObsessedGardener A personal pet-peeve of mine... go listen to the podcasts of Aofel's acidic demise.... he rolled a "16" and an "18..." Nnnnnever a nnnnnineteen... Revisionist fake news... And that's a big reason why Wil lost the internship...
I just recently got into these guys (ive watched some in the past, just didnt take time to watch alot). Watching Binwin in this video, I can see he wasnt happy in the end of his participation in the live shows. He was so full of life. In the end he was just there. His voice even sounded happier.
The whole moment starting here 1:15:10 and ending with "maybe now I can forgive myself" is my favorite moment in acquisitions history. Second place is Lisa Morgan saying "Is she prettier than me?"
I was at this PAX, I participated in a Red Box contest, and I won a Red Box autographed by Larry Elmore himself. Just a few weeks ago I finally cracked it open as part of a general resurrection of 4th edition stuff I have lying around because I'm running a game at work.
Now, this isn't hate, but Wheaton really didn't fit in with this group. I get the feeling he has a much bigger love for the roleplaying aspect of the game than the others, so it's not really anyone's fault. They just didn't match. It was kind of awkward when he was trying to get fully into character, and the others were joking around and cutting off his epic speeches. That's why I like the later ones better, with Rothfuss as Viari.
That actually is a problem, because far too many kids out there see this and think that D&D is mostly about combat. Any mostly combat focused campaign will make combat irrelevant, because they either never die, are easily able to resurrect or constantly replace their character. Once you reduce the number of combats and make them have serious consequences you will become attached to your character and start being afraid for him. Thats when roleplaying gets important. This is why I dislike later episodes ... because ROLEplaying > ROLLplaying IMO.
+Much006 Most published adventures have way more combat encounters than we see on these shows. There's no "wrong" way to play. It's all personal preference.
I totally agree. I really liked the way Will played. I do like the comedy of Jim and Binwin though. Omen (or most likely the player behind him) a bit too arrogant for my tastes
I kind of agree, as a big fan of Wil, I feel his personality was too big for the group. I get the feeling him being the big celebrity in the group meant he always wanted to be the centre of attention, his turns were always drawn out he had these attempts at the dramatics and even when it was other peoples turns he was always in with comments and quips. Which now and again is fine, but it became a little cringe as the events went on. His over-reacting to things like Acid and mentions of party members being killed kind of put me off his character, actually wanting to see him fail more. I do feel Viari makes for a better member to the party, and I like the direction they went in bringing back Aeofel as a vilin in the form of the masked "kylo ren" character from "Dron Enterprises" who backstabbed the group in the 12th episode of "the series" (the season about the Staff of 7 parts) I find Wil would make for a decent DM against the group, but Chris does such a great job It would be hard to accept Wil taking over from him on a regular basis, maybe as a one off return (to DM maybe an adventure based on them trying to take down Aeofel)
Wheaton spends his energy playing to the crowd, instead of playing the game in front of him. He is obnoxiously loud, easily rises to the bait of others messing up his character name, and wants to be the center of attention.
Damn I really like Wil. He brought quite a lot to the team. They all are so different. He is nerdy and quick to think and feels comfortable in front of the audience.
Idk what everyone is complaining about, Will was really funny in my eyes! Well, it is just an opinion, and if you happen to have a different one, I tip my hat to you and stroll on my marry way.
Its just a minority, and the complaining suddenly happened. As there was no complaining on this video in 2013. Will must have said something after the middle of 2013, or in 2014 somewhere that pissed of a minority of loud people.
raphaeltrumpetsound Nope. I found out why it happened. It started because of Gamer Gate, and after Felicia Day got Doxed. Then Will took a firm Stance against it. Which made TB angry. And well considering how popular TB is. Its bound to happen that you get people that do not. Also table top started on Apr 2, 2012. That was 2 and half years before the will hate train started. And I was right being the minority. Considering that gamer gate has less then 30k members now.
Ever since I started watching these, Scott Kurtz has become one of the funniest people IMO. He's has never failed to make me bust out laughing in every episode and every podcast.
Acq Inc originally started as an audio podcast, click 'About' and go to the expanded video description to find a link. Next year I plan to start making clip-art videos and bringing the first three episodes to TH-cam, but I have two ambitious projects I need to finish first, hopefully before New Years.
Not to worry, Season 7 should be coming out early next month along with PAX. I put a link in the video description that leads to Seasons 1-4 if you want to look at them first.
I didn't make the animations, that was Chris Straub, webcomic artist of Broodhollow, I just made sure all the ones that got cut from the Wizards TH-cam version showed up here. I'm not nearly that good an illustrator, I'm thinking lots of Photoshop cutouts, with the monsters for each encounter drawn from the Halls of Geekery (for example, the first encoutner with goblins would feature Gollum, Grendle, and a Gremlin, with Yoda thrown in at some point.)
So I just want to acknowledge or probably re-acknowledge that an entire story arc for both the A team and the C team was completely invented off of Jerry's answer to the first question.
BlackfootFerret The great thing is that Perkins held Jerry's answer in his pocket for so long, it didn't come back until the fight aboard the airship in the 2014 West game. And yeah, Kris Straub's first professional roll and he just botches it so amazingly. But his RP reaction is just amazing.
BlackfootFerret Yeah I just recently finished the C team episodes that are currently out. I didn't original plan on watching them, because I wasn't a fan of the group at first, but they quickly grew on me. Especially Donaar and K'thriss.
Mike Krahulik (jim) and Jerry Holkins (Omin) are the ones who created Penny Arcade while Scott Kurtz (Binwin) is the author/artist behind PvP Online. If that is what you are asking.
deafpowerranger Hehehe, unfortunately this was before Green Flame was a thing. But it was great seeing the audience keeping it going to the point it almost distracted Chris in the 2015 game ^_^
+Matthew Brown Audience: "What colour is the fire elemental?" Chris: "..." Jerry: "You started this." Chris: "I know! But it's clearly orange!" Audience: "Orange flame!"
Well, Jim brings up a good point. Why not use Arcana to Intimidate? Add your Intimidate Check and your Arcana? Even if the Intimidate Score is low, ANYE person - unless they're a fellow mage - is going to unleash a monster load in their shorts if a Wizard came up to them, body burning with flames. I'd allow that.
+Kojin MacJorn Actually in 4th Edition, using arcana to intimidate became possible a couple years after this game. The Heroes of Shadow supplement introduced a talent called Spook, which is a encounter power that lets the user do an arcana check in place of intimidation.
If you need to have the rules "allow that" you are playing D&D wrong. You need to have and use a spell capable of either faking the threat or actually doing it (but summoning a demon for intimidation is a bit expensive ... since you dont want to kill the prisoner) ... but since 4e dumbed down magic by giving everyone the same limited number of spells it seems to be bad for that by lacking flexibility.
Click -Show More- below the video desc, there's a link there to take you to the Wizards Podcast site. You want the Third adventure (4th is a Dark Sun one-shot). All the adventures earlier than 2010 are audio only.
They did a game at each PAX PRIME event since 2010. The 2013 D&D PAX event was preceded by 8 audio podcast's that acted as a prelude to the PAX 2013 show.
Er, Episode 4 (Well, that's what I call it) Was a one-shot Dark Sun audio podcast. It didn't actually use the famous Acq Inc characters, just three new ones, so it's sort of in an separate universe. I just call it Episode 4 because it's still awesome, and I was starved for this stuff back then.
A wonderful DM knows how to Introduce comedy into the game on occasion. One of my favorite shots was the characters set up am Ambush in a mist covered river. Using hollow reeds as breathing tubes, and their archers situated as flanking shooters ( good strategy). When their pursuers reached their side of the river they tripped the ambush and the fight was on! The fighters in the river went melee' and archers/ crossbowmen shot down any still on the opposite bank. When all the fighting was concluded the DM said, " Wait a minute. There is a swirl in the water next to you. You see eyes rising to the surface looking up." The character, wielding a mace (cleric) said, "HIT HIM!" Rolled a 17 to hit. SPLAT!! The cleric asked," I hit him didn't ?!" The DM said, " It didn't 'feel' like a him?....Reach down pick up what's there I guess,,,," The cleric reached down, and pulled up.....a bullfrog! The ensuing laughter is STILL echoing through that town! The druid wasn't pleased (fiercely trying to hold back his laughter, and wasn't very successful) sternly reminded the cleric of target identification before striking!!
Yeah, it seems only noob watchers are complaining. It's funny that even though everyone is having fun, and he's doing it on purpose, they don't get the joke. He's not being loud to be funny. It's his DnD persona that he takes on while he played this. Wil isn't always like this. It's the same group that complains when Jerry interrupts Chris or think that the jokes are staged. Just sad people who want to complain. Wil is fine, people need to get over it.
A list of all the podcasts and live shows by AI: www.crplt.de/dnd-ai/ I know, nobody asked for it, I did it anyway. I was looking for something like that, could not find a decent source, so I made my own. Feel free to share. :) It’s a complete list of all the Acquisitions Incorporated adventures, both the podcasts and the videos (live-shows and the series)
Well, i see it like this.. if one of your dear party members has a very good opportunity to save you, without him/her putting his or hers own life at risk by any means doing so... you'll be pretty pissed about it as well. No, i didn't think it was hard to listen to at all, i enjoyed the whole show like normal person, because i can see through scott and all his fake shit, the only thing that was hard was when Chris MF Perkins gave scott such a nasty ass burn, that scott will feel it for all eternity 1:16:57 - 1:17:30 i mean gee, that was savage as fuck, if you ask me, and he clearly deserved it, and more, because scott made Will quit the party.
Every time I watch this it just confirms that Wheaton is annoying as hell. There's nothing appealing about him, except when he's quiet. But Chris Perkins....he just rocks me. So amazingly brilliant he is.
If you goto the d&d site you can see ALL the podcasts listed that take place before and after this and the ones in between the pax games which mainly take place as the podcasts season finales
In another development, Scott Kurtz's Table Titans Kickstarter just hit over 100k, with the stretch goal being the creation of a D&D podcast involving Kurtz and a group of his own construction, so it's a bit like Acquisitions Inc And Friends.
Nowhere near often enough. It's hard to find any RPGs on TH-cam, especially ones where it's not loud people on Skype eating loudly into their mics the whole time. I swear to god Americans cannot forego eating for any length of video from watching every RPG gameplay I can find. :(
And sports fans will waste all day traveling to overcrowded stadiums to watch someone else play, get roaring drunk, and yell at the TV when they game home. One of my fond memories from college was witnessing someone throw a television set from a 3rd story dormitory window. They didn't even bother to look where it was going.. could have killed someone, or smashed a car to hell. They were upset their team lost. Hope you don't mind if I call our Nation's Pastime a waste of time.
Jesus, I just remembered why I never could finish this video before. Wheaton's miscellaneous moaning and screaming and roaring and whining is incredibly annoying, especially with headphones on. Rothfuss was an immense upgrade.
Ah, okay :) After the last 40mins of the videos, I can guess why you are annoyed. I liked it, but he was a bit over the top. Titansgrave is a Fantasy/Sci-Fi mix. I loved it.
if you read a note in the cave, it mentions how they should have supported the beams with bronze bottoms and if he hears the ceiling creak any more he's going to stop drinking
Everything before this was just a podcast. There is a link in the description that will bring you to all the previous episodes (seasons 1-4) that you can listen to.
The crowd helping/playing Wil's turn is so worth it. That and "Sarcastic Laughing Guy". He's like the Blueglass of this community. Makes up for all the bitching Wil does.
I had a ton of fun watching all of the Acquisitions Inc. Games. Good stuff. I am moving soon, but hopefully once I am settled I can get back into gaming! Don't tell my wife! ;)

deafpowerranger Hehehe, unfortunately this was before Green Flame was a thing. But it was great seeing the audience keeping it going to the point it almost distracted Chris in the 2015 game ^_^
BlackfootFerret "WHAT COLOR WAS THE FLAME?"
...
"Just remember, you brought this upon yourself"
"I know"
+Matthew Brown
Audience: "What colour is the fire elemental?"
Chris: "..."
Jerry: "You started this."
Chris: "I know! But it's clearly orange!"
Audience: "Orange flame!"
Jesus was in this game?

NEAT!

Will's not just an actor...he's an OVER actor! Still love him.
Wil didn't come off as annoying here. I dunno what people are complaining about.
Wil was the freaking burn-master in this. Like, take 2d6 fire damage.
Wil is fine, people need to get over it.
golden rule of d&d: if your character is being annoying, you're being annoying.
Embershard? So THAT'S where the Embershard Mine in Skyrim comes from, from these guys! Awesome! :D
I have never played D&D, cinda want to play it, and i love to watch/hear these guys play.
Actually, I have some projects I have to do first, before Halloween and Christmas, so they're on hiatus for now.
A list of all the podcasts and live shows by AI: www.crplt.de/dnd-ai/
I know, nobody asked for it, I did it anyway. I was looking for something like that, could not find a decent source, so I made my own. Feel free to share. :)
It’s a complete list of all the Acquisitions Incorporated adventures, both the podcasts and the videos (live-shows and the series)
The first four adventures were audio only adventures, this was the first time they made an event out of it at PAX Prime.
Anyone else think the back and forth between Scot and Wil was hard to listen to?
Well, i see it like this.. if one of your dear party members has a very good opportunity
to save you, without him/her putting his or hers own life at risk by any means doing so...
you'll be pretty pissed about it as well.
No, i didn't think it was hard to listen to at all, i enjoyed the whole show like normal person,
because i can see through scott and all his fake shit, the only thing that was hard was when
Chris MF Perkins gave scott such a nasty ass burn, that scott will feel it for all eternity
1:16:57 - 1:17:30 i mean gee, that was savage as fuck, if you ask me, and he clearly deserved it,
and more, because scott made Will quit the party.
Wow, I can't believe this happened ~11 years ago.
Yeah, it was just when DND started becoming cool again.
@@BlackfootFerret yeah, I remember back when you first uploaded this. So much has changed. It's a shame that we probably won't see Aeofel again.
Did they ever do that podcast that they promised to make at the end of the video?
I'd love to see their return to the fortress of hell.
I’m catching up on all this, but I hope that Rad and Mr Stinky went on to create a branch of Acquisitions Inc.
Every time I watch this it just confirms that Wheaton is annoying as hell. There's nothing appealing about him, except when he's quiet. But Chris Perkins....he just rocks me. So amazingly brilliant he is.
If you goto the d&d site you can see ALL the podcasts listed that take place before and after this and the ones in between the pax games which mainly take place as the podcasts season finales
who is that guy playing aeofell or whatever? and why do I imagine him with no shirt together with felicia day .
Fantastic, I have watched them all AND found the podcast! I just hope they will do more....they will...right?
They just had an adventure last weekend at PAX East
BlackfootFerret Thanks, yes I saw it and watched it :) They did say something about another season of the podcast too!
In another development, Scott Kurtz's Table Titans Kickstarter just hit over 100k, with the stretch goal being the creation of a D&D podcast involving Kurtz and a group of his own construction, so it's a bit like Acquisitions Inc And Friends.
+Phillip Powell Almost every pax :D
Were the Noobtoob Army taking over the retro game room again?
Jesus, I just remembered why I never could finish this video before. Wheaton's miscellaneous moaning and screaming and roaring and whining is incredibly annoying, especially with headphones on. Rothfuss was an immense upgrade.
I physically recoil every time he makes a "joke." So glad he's gone.
Check out Titansgrave before you judge Wheaton. He is amazing!
RhaegarStorm I like the guy in general, even read one of his books. But he's annoying as all hell here. Will give Titansgrave a shot at some point.
Ah, okay :) After the last 40mins of the videos, I can guess why you are annoyed. I liked it, but he was a bit over the top.
Titansgrave is a Fantasy/Sci-Fi mix. I loved it.
I think half the problem is the poor audio. I’m no sound tech but isn’t there a setting for maximum volume picked up from each mic?
They talked about a podcast where they'd finish the adventure. Did that podcast happen and if so, does anyone know how to find it?
Every time will opens his mouth I turn the sound down
(3.5e D&D) Planning Domain; granted powers: Extend Spell as a bonus feat; 1st death watch, 2nd augury, 3rd clairaudience/clairvoyance, 4th status, 5th detect scrying, 6th heroes' feast, 7th scrying, greater, 8th discern location, 9th time stop
if you read a note in the cave, it mentions how they should have supported the beams with bronze bottoms and if he hears the ceiling creak any more he's going to stop drinking
There is a link in the description of this that will bring you to the podcasts for Aquisitions Inc.
Everything before this was just a podcast. There is a link in the description that will bring you to all the previous episodes (seasons 1-4) that you can listen to.
Those were my favorite parts... whenever there's acid involved.
This must be the only instance in D&D lore that a severed arm was used to take down an acid hydra!
The crowd helping/playing Wil's turn is so worth it. That and "Sarcastic Laughing Guy". He's like the Blueglass of this community. Makes up for all the bitching Wil does.
Well, it's the 2011 video, "The Last Will and Testament of Jim Darkmagic" should be a link off of this video
it is on wizards of the coast site under penny arcade D&D, and is audio only.
"Acquisitions Incorporated will write the book". Good call!
Indeed. They were the first large-scale live-play D&D group. And now there are tons of them :)
"Very nice of you to bring me to a Bowie Concert"
...Oh Will... if only you knew what would happen in 6 years...
Thanks :) I have another project I have to finish before I get to this, so it'll be a bit yet.
We only lost the red shirt... 8:13
I had a ton of fun watching all of the Acquisitions Inc. Games. Good stuff. I am moving soon, but hopefully once I am settled I can get back into gaming! Don't tell my wife! ;)
