- In this special PAX East live D&D game, we switched things up a bit by having Chris Perkins play while Mike Krahulik and Patrick Rothfuss take a turn in the Dungeon Master's chair!
After returning from the Underdark, the heroes of Acquisitions Incorporated find themselves with some free time on their hands, and we take a closer look at what goes on in the office and in their home lives.

Hell yeah, I love Matt don’t get me wrong, but Chris Perkins is the casual fun DM I learned so much from. Thank you Chris Perkins! Your games got me into DND and helped me be a decent DM!

I mean that is kind of how I run as a GM because I don't run adventure paths/modules and general let my players have more freedom. which if you GM you know is essentially herding cats. so I just have bullet points and just run shit on the fly.

i remember listening to penny-arcade podcasts from several years ago and hearing about mike's inexperience with the whole dungeons and dragons thing. it brings a smile to my face to see his confidence as a dm now.
yeah, that's an important milestone achievement to keep in mind. he had no experience 2008~ and now he's running the show in front of thousands

I have played D&D for 25 years with the same guys, nearly every week we have played. These PAX series reminds me so much of us. Getting together to roll dice and have fun

Mike did an excellent job as DM.
+CL Stewart So did Rothfuss. Perkins was sweating about losing his swords, then finally understood why/how everything worked out once they were fighting in that last part. Magical weapons would have made it short work, ESPECIALLY his weapons. It ended up being really well-balanced, I thought.
+FfejTball Rothfuss was obviously very nervous in the spotlight - who wouldn't be - and kept stumbling over the adventure. It really shows you how much being prepared with good notes and a good adventure can save your ass when you get flustered. You can always tell when a DM is overwhelmed by them resorting to base-stat rolls instead of skills. Anxiety removes your ability to think deeply about a problem.
+William Brall I haven't watched the Rothfuss segment yet, but there's nothing wrong with just using ability checks depending on the situation, especially in 5e, and plenty of DMs use them. The skills don't cover every possible situation and not all players are going to be proficient in a particular skill anyway and would have to use their relevant ability check (though if a player does have a relevant skill proficiency they should point it out).
Doctor Thaddeus Bodog Sivana Brevity doesn't equal negligence. Of course ability checks are fine if no skill represents that action properly. Maybe you should watch the video to see what I was talking about?
William Brall I've since completed the video and I might have missed something, but I only really noticed that he used a dexterity check for aiming and strength rolls to break stuff and escape from the cube, which seems perfectly fine to me. Most of the checks were for stuff like acrobatics, arcana, perception, etc. And again, using the base stats doesn't make any difference if a character isn't proficient in a skill anyway.
Also, keep in mind that most them aren't expert 5e players and won't know much about the available skills apart from what's on their character sheets.

+Nick Mullins PAX videos in general have shit audio quality. I've just learned to live with them like that and make sure I pay as close attention as possible to them so I don't miss any little word. I swear if ears could squint to hear things mine would be doing it every time I see any PAX related show from anyone lol
Mike is a great DM. Weird experience watching these right through from his very first game in the original podcast.

In our all-goblins game of D&D, my character was trapped in a cube, so a couple other guys used their volatile urine to dig a hole towards my mouth so I could breathe

I love this dm so much. He keeps the story line going, while keeping it fun and entertaining, and allowing complete freedom for the characters to be funny and reckless. I know, this is the job of DMs, but it doesn’t always happen this way unfortunately

Both adventures were great. Someone near the bottom of the reviews wrote a particularly lengthy one critiquing Patrick's segment. Everyone has their opinion I guess, but hell, some people just take their own opinion WAY to seriously. It was funny man, and clever. Doesn't have to be world changing to be good. Anyway, MOST of the comments say they liked both, so I don't know why it bothered me enough to even write this post.
As usual, very damn funny to watch, can't wait for the next one.

I think it was kinda a joke, it was played on a constant sarcastic tone.
They would have to introduce a new character for a single session, so Chris played a well-known character instead. Requires less story-building

They didn't want him to overshadow the regular AI folks by creating a new character.
Drizzt IS boring ... ESPECIALLY when he fights, because it is ALWAYS a "mesmerizing dance of death".

I've watched this several times now and it's hilarious. One thing that I didn't like about it was I feel like Chris shouldn't have played as DnD's flagship character. He's hilarious and he makes awesome characters but I feel like playing as Drizt caused him to be stifled a bit. It would have been awesome to see him bring back characters like Piaro the Gnome or Rad Longhammer those characters were awesome. Just my opinion.

I want to see Chris as a player in a game. Having Matt Mercer as the DM would be amazing. Come to think of it, the reverse would be interesting as well. Or they could both play! But who would be the DM...? Mark Humes maybe.

I haven't. I've been done with high fantasy for a long time now, but I'm compelled to read them since he's such a cool guy. I've also listened to him speaking about his books a couple times and they sound enjoyable.
@@Wulfiebaby have you seen any of his talks? I'm the opposite. I liked him until I saw how rude he was about people saying they were excited for his new book. He told them not to say that. Like be nice to your fans. If they're being jerks, sure. But don't be a dick if someone asks you when the next book is out. And he does A LOT of other things besides writing the book. Can he do whatever he wants? Sure. But so can his fans. It goes both ways.

Never played D&D but always wanted. Its my first time to watch it. Most what i know about it is what i have seen in some movies short scenes. It feels like im really in that "world".

Anytime I invite my friends to play with my husband and I, I always get these looks of boredom and hear, “not my thing,” until I actually get them to play and now it’s weekly about 15 of us get together and have the best time ever

Why is the live audio so much quieter than the intro? Do you not apply any compression? Do you not normalize? The recording sounds good, so the source audio isn't the issue, but you could benefit from a bit of post-processing, IMHO.
