Every musician seems to play the main Super Mario Bros. theme slightly differently. Those fast staccato swing rhythms are nearly impossible to replicate the subtle jazz nuances that make it relaxed and playful despite the speed. I think he played it almost perfectly.

EVERY SINGLE redition I have EVER heard of this theme played by someone has parts that are "off".

yeah, I'll find some remakes and covers of the piece but I always find my way back to the original theme
Well radrickdavis welcome to the world of REAL music. Every rendition is different, because every person plays a song differently. Only programmed midi music (and recordings) can sound the same over and over again. Also I suspect that some of the parts are WAY too fast-paced for a human to be able to play it at its original speed.

Almost is a big part of that; those times when he did a split between the long notes into say... eighthes or triplets really made me cringe.
It was overall enjoyable, but the split notes just ruined the original super Mario bros theme for me

Every musician plays pieces differently which is my favorite thing about music. This guy plays it so perfectly that you can't tell the difference which can be in a way boring because I've heard them exactly the same in the games before. Bottom line, this guy is amazing

Greg Gomez no it doesn't. It sounds like a SEGA Master System or Game Gear, because only square waves are used here, whereas the NES and Game Boy sound chips can also do triangle waves and custom waveforms, and the NES can additionally do DPCM samples as well.

At 7:10 when I heard the ending dream song to Super Mario 2 I just about fainted from an eargasm. Haven't heard that since I first played this back in 1980's. Madison Nelson this is not how they made music. They used the fam icon systems music software. They couldn't really record things and put them in games without it sounding tinny and unpleasant.

They used tracking software that basically just tells the NES sound chip what to do.
Incorrect. We actually don't know what the Mario music was made with, but knowing how early technology was at that point it's possible they may have had a programmer type in code for the music from sheet music rather than use a GUI like FamiTracker.

Man, with this I can clearly see what music and do with memories of one person. All the melody are so strong in my memories that each one remind me of my childhood. And even worse I remember exactly what I was doing or where in the video game the melody comes from. Awesome!

This is great. The 8 bit sound transformed me back to where I was kid. It's incredible how music brings back such vivid memories. I can see exactly where was playing these games... who I was with, even in some cases what I was eating or drinking.
I realize this video is 4 years old, but it is easily the best video I have seen on TH-cam.

His timing is a bit off and he had space between notes that normally would be put out strongly for game factor

I guess that most of the small mistakes he made were actually due to him not being used to an electric piano. It is easy for your finger to slide off one key and play another, unlike a grand piano, where the keys push down further and have less slipping. That is also probably why some of his timing is off, because he is trying to nail those notes.

Don't forget Triangle and pulse waves...the NES could do those too. Nice remix though
John Rickard The NES/Famicom Had a Ricoh 2a03 sound chip, which provided it with 2 Square wave channels, One triangle wave channel, a noise channel and a DCPM audio sampled channel.
Close but not quite. The "square wave" channels could produce pulse waves too(though not to the same degree of precision provided by the SID chip)
SaladTosser The Ricoh 2AO3 chip wasn't just for sound generation. It also contained the 6502 CPU core, as in the system's processor 😄
