This is making me feel better about the time I tried Blades in the Dark and everything quickly degenerated into all of us in a rowing boat rowing for our lives while a steam barge full of angry heavily armed men chased us down and the police were keeping pace with us on foot along both canal banks. A lot of escalation for a heist which was basically "let's deliver a parcel for this one shifty feller". it's good to see the "let's gatecrash a booze up" heist go south just as quickly.
This sounds like the plot of an old cartoon
It's really a treat to see how fast the actual heist gets underway, even without the players knowing exactly what they're there for, was a wonderful eye-opener that I'll steal for my future BitD-runs. Thank you!

I quite literally let out a "whoop!" of joy, at the breakfast table, when I saw this had been uploaded. I have been hoping a Blades session was on the docket for Dicebreaker.
At about 38:50 onwards, there's something weirdly satisfying and bloody adorable about the way it looks like Johnny has one really tiny hand ^^
Can't wait for the rest!
I can't help but feel that Duskvol is what happend if you take BT's from death stranding and put them in (well, around) dishonoured's Dunwall

I was excited by Blades in the Dark when you first talked about it.
Now that I've seen it in action...
I love it.
I was excited when he mentioned it in an OX stream. Convinced when i really read into the story so i bought the book. After seeing this im now gonna run it at least once

Just bought Blades In The Dark for something different from our normal DnD 5E (which we love dearly but it is fun to spice things up). This session gave me a great feel for the game.

FINALLY
Just got this from the itch.io bundle!
I would like to tell a story of Blades that me and other players played once . It tok place in doskvool . But in short we were named the MADMEN and out plan was Vialonece and kill all other Gangs . And we were sucsessful . Also the capaingh went for 2.5 years ! And in the end we had this !
1. Our leader had 2 cahracters . 1 was a Plague rat that was a whisepr and died in an Ion caconc blast way . and then he rerolled in to a Vampire lady that in the end got to be the the new leader of Doskvol.
2. I started as a lowly slide , until I was contacted by a god named the Golden Stag . So I became main religious figure and started a crused agasint demons.
3. We had an edgy friend that decided at one point to be our Enemy and did all sorts of ANIME betrayal episodes with us. But in the end he became a robot.
4. Another character was a Drukard that was the best at fighting , so in the end this ultra drunkard became a new chife of Blue coats and to over that notion.
We enjoyed the game so much and we are playing another game with the same Gm. And we call our gm THE DEVIL. Due to mechanick of devils bargain. So I sugest for everyone to play this game at least once !
That was great fun. We're looking at playing this in the new year - seems pretty low prep GM wise, is that actually the case or just Johnny making it look easy? 🤔
It's low prep! The players tend to generate the scores - in the campaign I ran I rarely had to tell the players about new developments because they came to each session with an idea of what they wanted for the gang. It means you're doing a lot more improvising, but that's quite exciting. Without exaggeration, running blades made me a palpably better GM. (Johnny)
@@dicebreaker thanks for the reply! The improv side is a little daunting but I've run Ten Candles before and that's also very much on the fly so it shouldn't be too bad.

You could run DnD and have guest players with your new setup.
Pretending for a moment that there's any chance of me ever having people locally to play this game with, the setting and depth of lore in Blades intrigues me, but this video has kind of made me think it's geared for genuine scoundrel characters as opposed to lovable scoundrels or thieves with hearts of gold. How accurate is that impression, in the experience of whoever wants to answer this? If I wanted to play a character who was genuinely interested in common good and does what he thinks is right/things that assholes have coming to them regardless of the legality, is that possible in Blades?
Yes, bladesinthedark website even has a supplement called vigilantes to play as more of a good guy style crew
Even in the base game there's plenty of room for you to be a 'gang' that focuses on robin hood style antics, or on ousting one of the nastier gangs out of an area to make the locals' lives better, or being idealistic revolutionaries who want to start a popular uprising against the rich people or on just being a heavily armed neighbourhood watch scheme
I think it's absolutely possible to play a blades crew that tries to be a positive influence on their community, but it isn't the default mode of the game. You'd definitely have to talk to your players about expectations and maybe adjust some dials to make the crew a little less desperate.
If you are the one good guy in a blades crew you're probably going to have a rough time. It could be really interesting rp, but you need buy in from your fellow players so that you aren't just turning every score into a variation on the trolley problem.
My crew tried to start a new age feel good sect. It didn't take long until they were stealing from grandmothers and bombing abusive bosses. Main precipitator is everybody is stronger than you and everything is taken already, so you have to step on someone's toes to get anything done.

This is one game that NEEDS a GM screen.
I would argue the exact contrary. It's very open and honest with all it's effect/level stuff and asking players to decide which skill they want to use. Also, I believe the clocks are made especially to give players (and the gm) a visual representation what's happening at what rate.
Our group has found Roll20 works pretty well. Dice rolls visible in chat, different clocks scribbled on the "map" area, and different pages visible to the two teams (7 players, so we're playing two vaguely affiliated crews) and for the GM. Between that and posting crew/ char sheets on Discord the GM has access to everything and the opportunity to keep what's supposed to be behind the screen to himself; though most of it is just the clocks each crew has going on anyway. ;^)
Plus, quarantine friendly!
