Me too. I myself can relate more to those who admit their difficulties and fails. Since about a year I have discovered several times that some of the artists on social media "admit" fails that obviously haven't really happened. I'm sure they also fail sometimes just like everybody does, so I wonder why they don't admit their true fails. It makes me wander off and unsubscribe if I catch a creator doing this a second time, because I crave honesty.
Thank you for creating a realistic view on how to sell your art and creating a business from it. No other video I've come across relating to this have always been "too good to be true". thank you again it was nice for some realistic ideas for a change.
thank you so much... you are so lovely. I hope your little family is doing very well. I have begun to paint again since August of 2018 when I painted a large 48" x 36" for my son's 18th birthday. I made a painting of his favorite summer place in Sonoma California near the Russian River. I had never seen him freak out so much. I had not painted in 20 years. He did not know I had once painted. I have a BA in Photography, and Graphic Arts. I have 2 minors in Fine Art and Interior Design. But since I had him, Interior Design is what I have done for 20 years. He begged me to paint from now on and retire from working so hard and having issues with safety during this Corona Virus era. You have been very inspiring. I appreciate all your work and your honesty. I am now going to paint full time.... or the best of what can be considered full time. lol. 80% perspiration and 20% inspiration! My question is regarding originals vs prints. What is the ratio of your sales of one vs the other? What to look for and whom to use to make your prints? Also, keeping your own rights and protecting your original artwork when using photography on the internet, when printing prints, when selling originals etc. Can you elaborate or make a video when possible about the subject? I am currently painting with acrylics, mostly landscapes, some portraits of our son (he is so handsome...lol... he will kill me!), to allow for some technique testing. I need to get out of my head and plan for my next 20 years. I don't want to retire. What for? So creating another business it is! I have always been quite successful with my creativity... but this time it feels more raw... more of my soul and emotions are flowing. I know you understand. Anyway, if you can, you may reply or do whatever makes you comfortable regarding these subjects. I admire all of your work and what makes you lovely is your soul and human essence. Thank you and always take care of you and your family before you take care of others such as your followers. When mama is happy we all are happy. Blessings to you.... and hello from Sunny California.... well, as soon as all the fires die down... hoping for clear skies. Stay safe. Rose Aurora.
Katie! Let me say that I was browsing different videos of people who have their online shops giving tips and teaching about selling handmade products , but honestly you are the only one in my opinion who I feel really comfortable listening to, learning easily from your videos and love your art as well. So! Let me send my big THANKS to you XOXO
I’m surprised you don’t have more subs your super useful anyway best luck in your TH-cam business but just know that your not alone I’ll always support you
I used to have an art studio at Western Ave Studios. They host a monthly open house which allows artists to sell artwork straight to consumers. I loved the community, I was perpetually inspired, but hated selling days, because I’m so introverted, was intimidating!
I would appreciate some top tips for all the 1st timers who will be setting up for their local art booths/shows when it comes to the setting- up & ways to display your work. Also, tips and ways for marketing your business while at these events and advice on how to draw people in while encouraging potential future buyers.. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to share these videos with us, so helpful! Love you and love your work!
Agreed, how to display work, including mounting watercolours would be really helpful as I find it really confusing on the tools and materials needed, thanks.
There are SO many options for setting up your booth. A lot of people like to use grid walls to maximize their hanging space but that's a serious investment 🤑. It also depends on how much space you have and on precisely what you are selling. Best 3 tips. 1) Make your space reflect who you are 2) Make sure you have at least some pieces at eye level and 3)Make sure you have plenty of light.
I think something to note with starting a TH-cam Channel is it takes a long time for it to be a place of revenue. I have made over 50 videos covering Speedpaints, studio vlogs and tips and I’m definitely no where near being able to make it a place of revenue but instead it’s such a fantastic creative outlet and I’m addicted to making videos almost as much as art 😅❤️🙌 I guess it all comes back to following what you love 😊🥰 and no matter what you are doing it always takes time and patience 🙌 Love your videos! Also really excited for you to share your experience once your bubs arrives! My lil man is almost 7 weeks old and I’m finding it hard to reintroduce art but just taking each day as it comes atm ❤️
thank you so much Katie, this is very helpful. shipping from where I live, is SO EXPENSIVE. sometimes it can cost as much as half of the paintings price. costumers don't want to pay that much, don't know what to do?
I really love your realistic and honest approach of sharing your knowledge being an artist myself for many years I spend most of the time into finding my own artist style/voice and struggled about how I wanted to sell my artwork trying out different paths ,I now feel more and more that I just want to be in control myself and listening to you I recognized a lot of how and who I am as a person it was an eyeopener in the sense being also more an introvert and your information is very valuable , thanks for being so open and honest it is something I cherish and value a lot in a person , thanks a lot !
I hardly socialize due to personal reasons. As you stated your more introvert nature, I am wondering how you tackle the economic monster. I need some advice here. 😉
Brilliantly done! As one who made my living with art (of a different nature) for 40 years, I can say that you have already shared some profound insights into success. Even though I'm retired, I look forward to learning more. Who knows? I still have paints and canvases to spare! Thanks!
That is so useful!! Thank you for being so honest! It's really encouraging to see how you deal with "failure-or-learning opportunity" - you're right, it's not the end of the world, just another piece in the jigsaw puzzle. I'd really like to know more about your take on two things: 1) materials: I can paint with few pigments, so I can buy some better quality ones, but I cannot afford good canvasses. But I feel if I were to sell something, people could expect decent supports that last. How have you dealt with this problem before you became successful enough to buy good stuff? 2) For sending paintings in the post, apart from packaging them well (I know you're made some videos about that), how do you find a good carrier? I see Royal Mail excludes art work from compensation, and the carriers that specifically transport art work charge more than I would for the work. Thank you for making this series, great idea! :)
This series is a great idea! I would love it if you can include some (or all) of the following topics: Pricing art work; Original vs prints (pricing, can you sell prints of a sold original, etc.); Tips for safely wrapping art work of different medias for shipping (framed canvas, prints, paintings on paper etc.). Thanks!!
Thank you Katie for all of the art inspiring knowledge that you give to all of the artists !!! Keep doing what you do that teaches people who need more insight!!!
This is a refreshing video! So far yet to encounter any artist talk about selling their art work. You r the first! Love your honesty. I am excited to know more in your future videos! ❤❤
Such a useful video! And I love how your positivity and genuine urge to help people shines through! Lots of love and thanks to you Katie. I was thinking maybe you can make a detailed video on how to print your art (like the paper/printer/packaging, etc. involved)and sell them? It is a passive source of income that many of us can benefit from.
Great video! This is very helpful. You explained things that I will use for my artwork. I want to sell my art and stay consistent. I'm learning how to sell art because oneday I want to sell my work and make profit. I'm a passionate artist myself. And I love hearing other artists advice on how to sell and market themselves as artists. It's a process and journey but eventually we'll get the hang of it. You have a new subscriber! I enjoyed this video. Keep up the great work!
This series sounds like a wonderful idea, and it's all relevant-thanks for thinking of this. As for other topic ideas: you mentioned Society6. I'd be really interested in any thoughts you have on both Society 6 specifically, and Print on Demand generally.
Hey Katie, Writing to you from New Orleans. It's Mardi Gras time right now. I am a subscriber and also a beginner ( 2 years + or - ) I'm going to be honest , I started out watching this video trying to learn something but towards the end of the video I realized I never heard a word you said. I love the way you say the word painting without the G. Are all words ending with a G pronounced like when you say ( PAINTIN ) in your world .Sounds great , keep up the good job....... Uncle Tom's Arts Crafts
How many of one painting do you make? I've always wondered with people that sell like 500 of one painting. Is there a way you can just print what the original one looks like on other canvases? Thank you!
Q: How did you start painting? Was it at school or on your own. And how did you grow in your work? Was it by watching special videos, books, online courses, ... . I am learning to paint myself, but I feel like something is missing. For example: too much water or too little water, thickness and smoothness, using the wrong paint brushes for what I want to achieve, etc. Can you help me out or make a video like this one about it? Thanks, love you work!
Thank you so much, love the series💕 it's so helpful! I am just starting out and I'm so overwhelmed by all the stuff you have to keep in mind and organize
Thank you for doing videos like this! They are really reassuring💕✨ one question that I would like anwsered is about packaging and shipping larger paintings🤔 like canvases? how much does that usually cost, ways to ship them safely, etc.
I love this video and look forward to this series as well. I am planning to start up my own art business hopefully sometime during this year. So I will take any advice I can get lol. I too am an introvert so having an online presence versus in person is totally perfect for me. 💜😉
I explored your channel today and I must say your channel is really, really helpful for people who love painting. Thanks for such good tutorials! ;) my question : How can people who don't even have an idea about selling paintings and go should we price our artwork?
Thankyou for sharing , this is so helpful and informative. I've been thinking about making art prints to sell and also looking at making other products from my art.
I am so glad you are doing these series! Yay! I plan to start selling my art and recently also started my art TH-cam Channel. These videos would be very helpful. Katie, whats the best thing to paint on with acrylics - can I use very thick cardboard, wooden canvas (it's cheaper for me) or should I definitely use canvas on a frame? I am looking for budget friendly options.
Thank you so much for this video! I have never seen an artist that opened up about their business like this and it's honestly helpful. You know... as a college fine arts student it's really blurry when I think of the future path. I know I'll have to work my way since my degree garantee me nothing. It was just recently i found kinda my style and while working on university stuff and doing my own artwork I also tried to keep up with a regular update on Instagram... Which I sadly could not keep up :/ May be in some future I will try in the right conditions.
Great tips Katie thank you👍 I'm at the start of putting myself out there on my art journey later this year, I have a plan in place but taking my time to get things in the right order as in Bank account, webpage, business cards etc. My question- Did you start drawing is a hobby that developed into selling or was that part of your plan at the start? Thanks Jan Bell (George is my Dogs name that I go under on TH-cam!)
Great video Katie! I just discovered you through Instagram from a friend’s story. I’m so glad, I’ve saved 5 of your videos already to watch later! 😊 I started an art Patreon this year and would be happy to answer any questions you have! I’m a marketing professional, and have been practicing art for 3 years. Let me know if you have any questions!
Hi Katie, First of all I would like to say that I absolutely love to watch your videos. They always motivate me to create and try and fail of course as this is absolutely part of the journal. I've been wondering how to set up something for myself. I've seen so much great tips and ideas but as I'm living in the Netherlands there might be different organizations to use when you want to sell prints for example. Do you know anything about that? Or do you know a Dutch artist that is open to contact and a conversation? Thank you so much for putting yourself out there. Keep strong and be happy xx
As an illustrator, how can you stand out on social media? Also, is timing and hashtags that important? What's the difference between publishing on Friday or Monday? Thanks you so much! :)
I was wondering if you sell the pictures that you teach? I just wonder if people purchasing the originals want a painting that loads of people have painted. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!
Great video, thank you. But you didn't say anything on pricing art and you said you will :) :) I hope you will make another video about that cause it will be helpfull.
Dear Katie, first of all thank you so much for your help and this video! your are amazing :-) I´ve done a lot of research of how to make my art prints and maybe you have some advise for me? For instance, do I need definitely photoshop for that? I think if we need it, maybe you could tell us which features help us mostly artists/painters, since photoshop has a lot of tools :(. Do you print at home? if not, How do you prepare your prints to give it to a print service provider? I struggle a lot first making my own photos with my camera, I am not very sure which settings do I need and I use most of the time my Iphone :-). Thank you again! Katty
I love your channel. Have you been thinking for a long time before you started your youtubechannel? Or was is a quick decision? How long did it take until you could earn money from your channel?
Love your artwork 😍 do you think it’s cheaper to print your own artwork when selling prints or get them printed from a company and which is the best company? Thank you 😊 xx
Hi Katie. I’d particularly like your take on Etsy. I’ve tried them to no avail and have many watercolours available are there any tricks or tips to using this site.
Thank you for your efforts in making these videos! Glad you are able to earn from them too. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on crafting your online presence, as an artist looking to earn a decent income. For example whether to go broad, offering your art in as many different forms and on an many platforms as possible, or to choose an approach and pour all your energy into developing that. Personally I'v felt a bit at sea trying to compare all the pros and cons and fee structures of so many different online selling platforms! Alot of them seem designed to crowd source artwork at low cost and for high profit, for the sites' hosts, not the producers of the artwork. Would be great to hear what you think about this debate, with the experiences you've had. Thanks again! 🙂✌🏻🥀
Zazzle has artists as makers, your art is uploaded and can be either ordered as prints in canvas or various papers, or even on merch like mugs, totes, clothing. I think the joining is actually free, and I don’t know what the compensation is actually. Just an option to explore?
Very interesting, thank you. At the moment the only place I really sell is Local Art Society Exhibitions but there's not too many of them and they have a practical price limit of up to £400 I've seen much higher but they never sell plus I don't make it easy for myself as my paintings take around 10-20 hours work so the hourly rate is poor. I sell prints through Fine art America but total sales are 2 prints after 1.5 years! Thinking about Etsy but can you realistically sell at highish prices? I'm less than useless at the social side of the business (Autism diagnosis) so that doesn't help to say the least. Anyway, I've rambled on for too long thanks again for the great video.
Hey!🤗 So this year im going to college but Im not sure which one...the only thing that i know is i want to do paintings like you in the future 🤗🤗 Im from Portugal but i would like to study in london . And my question is : did you went to college? And which one?
Hi katie, thank you so much for all those advices, I want to know if you learn painting by your self or did you went to art school? also how do you film your videos on youtube? thanks
I’ve got a couple of videos about my art journey so far and how I got here. I never went to art school. I just practised lots and trial and error 😊 I did a LOT of research online about how to start a business.
Hi Katie, I love your work and your TH-cam videos 😊. I was wondering how you do your bookkeeping and do you do your own tax statement. I find that part of running a business a little daunting 😆
I have questions. When you became an artist, did you have to have a business license or permit to sell or resale license? Did you need to register your business as an artist? I am trying to be an artist and sell my work but before I do, I don't know all business wise. Or can I just sell my artwork to people that are interested in my work?
I greatly dislike doing economic stuff, so I am hoping that one of my sons will take over this work, as two of them are internet professionals, who right now are setting up their own new businesses. I also don't like social media and I am only on TH-cam since several years, but without my own content. I write, paint and handicraft, but currently I earn the most from translating text and books from English to German when for example authors ask me to do the translation. I truly have difficulties advertising myself, so I only show my art in my town and to those whom I know or get to know. Suffering from cPTSD, I hardly socialize. I would say, I am doing everything but improving my art sells. I used to be freelance journalist and as such also covered press and PR for more than 30 years. So I of course know what I would tell myself if I were my PR assistant. Yet living socially distanced and having had to retire from my former beloved profession, also is part of my authentic me. Thus I'm aiming at another, more authentic manner of handling the situation. I thought of starting a channel with creative tutorials, but there already are so many out there. The best are those who are authentic *and* also have the guts to show themselves in public. I was thinking of real life art classes, but people are so focused on online services, that I don't really believe this to be a good decision, unless it's a renown artist. Do you have an idea for unknown artists on how to sell art without going public online?
We bought one of Katie's prints from Society 6. The quality was stunning! You can see the texture of the paint so well that you think you should be able to feel it! Hope that helps xxx
Thank you so much for sharing. I've opened up an Etsy shop. It's been open for about a month. Thus far no sales. If people see no sales at a shop, do you feel it makes them back off from buying? My other question is about pricing. I have no idea how much to price my art. I've searched for similar art to mine at Etsy and it goes from around $500.00 into to the thousands. I've seen some as high as $40,000!!!! Any insight?
School never touches these subjects... Insane!!! We need more artists sharing their experience when it comes to selling art. Great job Katie
Great tips on art selling. I’m still at phase one where I don’t want to part from anything I create.
I have that problem as well.
Me too! 😂
I loved the advice about failing! Most people tend to hide their failures, so I very much appreciate you talking about that.
It’s honestly a part of the journey 😊🙌🏻 we shouldn’t feel ashamed!
Thanks so much 😊🙌🏻 I always try to keep it real 🤣
I would love to know your advice on pricing art when you're first starting to sell!
No problem! 😊👍🏻
Pricing is a problem 😑
SAME!!!
Yes!!!!! Please do!

Love this! Can’t wait for the next one ! Pricing art is a tough one! Any tips ?
i'm very interested in this series. I am curious about tips on how one should price their art
Katie!!! thank you so much for your videos!! i love all your art and you! its great!
Great video Katie! Thanks!
Hi Katie I love your work. Yes I would love to learn how to print my heart
Thank you for taking the time to explain.
Which I sadly could not keep up :/
May be in some future I will try in the right conditions.
Thank you for your wonderful advice!
You’re welcome Cheryl ☺️ if you have any tips or feedback that would be great!
Thank you Katie. I can't wait for the rest in the series. My question is how do you know how to price?
Loved the video! I’m interest in how you ship your artwork, what materials do you use for packaging and where do you buy it?
Great tips Katie thank you👍 I'm at the start of putting myself out there on my art journey later this year, I have a plan in place but taking my time to get things in the right order as in Bank account, webpage, business cards etc. My question- Did you start drawing is a hobby that developed into selling or was that part of your plan at the start? Thanks Jan Bell (George is my Dogs name that I go under on TH-cam!)
Love love love your art style 😍😍
Thank you 🥰😊
Thanks Katie, this was so informative.
Amazing thank you, you are so lovely and helpful
Loved your video as always. Snagged the free skillshare offer. It seems like a pretty cool site. Thanks!
I love your videos
This was so helpful! Thank you so much! Looking forward to the next videos
nice , thanks for sharing this
Hi Katie,
First of all I would like to say that I absolutely love to watch your videos.
Loved this vedio💕💕 its was quite helpful.❤
I was wondering if you sell the pictures that you teach? I just wonder if people purchasing the originals want a painting that loads of people have painted. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!
Great video, thank you. But you didn't say anything on pricing art and you said you will :) :) I hope you will make another video about that cause it will be helpfull.
What software you use to correct/adjust your videos. Thank you
Great advice, looking forward to learning more! ☺️
Thank you for the tips! 🌸🌸🌸
Good Video, Thanks
Considering the costs of supplies and shipping, is there a percentage of that amount you add to the price of your art work? Your videos are fantastic
Hi katie .... i like your painting. I want to know how you decide the price of every single of you painting.
Hi Katie, I was wondering how do you send out the art that your selling, do you go to the post office? Also, i love your art!!!
I do. I go to the post office 😊👍🏻
This was so helpful 😊
Yay I’m so pleased!
I love these type of videos ♡
Hi Katie, I love your work and your TH-cam videos 😊. I was wondering how you do your bookkeeping and do you do your own tax statement. I find that part of running a business a little daunting 😆
I have questions. When you became an artist, did you have to have a business license or permit to sell or resale license? Did you need to register your business as an artist? I am trying to be an artist and sell my work but before I do, I don't know all business wise. Or can I just sell my artwork to people that are interested in my work?
I love my sunset seen painting thank you so much your an amazing artist
Thanks Sophie!
I know you have one video where you share what technology and camera etc you use but I cant find it. can you put a link to it here?
Hey Katie, can you use acrylic paints during pregnancy. If so, which brand would you recommend?
Hiya!💞 I dont have a printer to make prints of my art to sell, is there places online that you would recommend that makes the prints for you?😊
I love your videos and you're super cool! #subscribed
When you started with Society 6, did you order anything from your shop to check quality? Or do they send you a sample? Loved this video! Thanks!
Unfortunately they don’t do samples which is really annoying 😩
We bought one of Katie's prints from Society 6. The quality was stunning! You can see the texture of the paint
so well that you think you should be able to feel it! Hope that helps xxx
❤️
Thank you so much for sharing. I've opened up an Etsy shop. It's been open for about a month. Thus far no sales. If people see no sales at a shop, do you feel it makes them back off from buying? My other question is about pricing. I have no idea how much to price my art. I've searched for similar art to mine at Etsy and it goes from around $500.00 into to the thousands. I've seen some as high as $40,000!!!! Any insight?
