I mean, I don't see the problem with this thing. This solves a lot of problems - you never need to buy new appliances, or books, or movies, because you can just wish for them. This strikes me as something that can only go wrong if you're the sort of person who immediately starts wishing for morally questionable things like real people or children.

I find it very difficult to watch films like these and not come away thinking that having slightly more rational characters would prevent these plots from happening. I don't understand the kind of people who would see a room like this and assume it would give them happiness as opposed to convenience. I suppose that's the theme: money can't buy happiness, and trying to *make* it buy happiness will guarantee a disaster, but it's too inconsistent for me to suspend my disbelief.

I actually feel bad for that John Doe... he was just a wish granted by the room just like Shane, he couldn't leave the house at all but, when he finally had the chance to do it, he got trapped in another building for life, that psychiatry hospital...
I thought that Jon Doe being a wished child means they are all inside the room, because Jon Doe would turn to dust if he left the house, so he wished for an entire world inside the room...

Welp. They could've used some of that money to pay for an IVF also. Maybe they could've tricked the room by having the person who works for a company that does IVF, bring a portable ATM into the home. But would the money turn into ashes if it's moved electronically? 🤷
It might be smart or it might be a nightmare where you can never be sure if you’re in the room or not. The concept is similar to Inception or even Star Trek’s holodeck.
This would be the dream for people that never leave the house. If the room truly has no limits you could create a universe, become immortal, and be the god of that universe.
Then wish to recreate the entire world/universe inside the room (much like Shane did with the forest and the cloned house). You literally live inside that room for the rest of your days BUT it would be like living in the actual world. You win.
Since we know that if the wish-maker dies then their wishes don't fade after leaving the room. We can assume the following: 1. Wish for a man who wishes for whatever you wish for. 2. Tell the man to wish for what you want 3. Tell the man to die

The second thing I would wish for in that room (assuming that the first thing was whatever made me realize that the room granted wishes) would be an instruction manual which explained the rules, limitations, and costs for wishes made in that room.
I don’t see how they would have still be in the room considering how Shane turned to dust, and most likely hadn’t wished for a world full of people, just an area similar to the house. Also, it is most likely not Shane’s child, as I would believe that any of part of him (including his sperm) would immediately age and turn to dust as soon as kate left the house.

Below is an explanation of the ending I found, sounds like the ending that was intended if the writer/director really thought everything through. The ending of The Room shows Kate sitting in a Motel bed holding a pregnancy test with the look of horror on her face as the test shows positive. Right after this, the light flickers and the film ends in the real or dream ending style of Inception. There is a popular theory that Shane is the creator of Kate’s baby, and because he died, the baby can live on. Kate now houses the essence of the Room in her womb. While it initially sounds correct, this theory is easily debunkable. Here’s why. To explain the ending of The Room, let’s recap a few points: Shane sexually assaulted Kate but was interrupted when Matt reached the house. Kate leaves the house before Shane dies, she sees Shane walk away as an old man and fall over. Fertilization in humans happens quite instantaneously after sex, the zygote enters the uterus in 3 to 5 days. In short, life is technically created quite instantly, but pregnancy tests get done when one misses the next menstrual cycle (about one month later). Kate and Matt had sex the night before Shane’s assault. Shane wasn’t able to go through with his assault on Kate. Even if he did impregnate her, Kate left the house before Shane died. Which means, her possible pregnancy by Shane would rapidly accelerate, causing her to instantly give birth. Though the ending shows Kate sitting one month later with a pregnancy test showing positive, she would have conceived the very moment Shane assaulted her. The zygote inside her would have swiftly advanced the moment she set foot outside the house. We see no such thing. The flickering light, in the end of The Room, is just to leave you wondering if it has anything to do with the house, but it doesn’t. It’s just an electrical glitch in the Motel. Just because her pregnancy test showed positive after a month, doesn’t mean life began inside her at that moment. If the lights were to flicker around her, it would have begun weeks before that. Finally, let’s not forget that Matt and Kate did have sex the night before their terrible experience. Considering the four points above, we can safely conclude that the baby is Matt’s and they are free from The Room.
She is only leaving the houses in the room though right? Shane and Matt were fighting outside in the end while she was holding the door from the inside. Therefore it could still be his.
Yep, Shane got nowhere near being able to impregnate Kate, plus what are the chances that the two of them have had sex since in the past month? I found every single "twist" weak, illogical and contrived. And the end just made me groan out loud. How the fuck did this garbage get made? The creation can leave the room if creator sacrifice himself/herself, So shane did the sacrifice and if she got immediately pregnant from his precum this accelerates her fetus to grow a bit and shane was about to die. So It's a possibility he is the father.
If everything fake dies outside that house, that would mean the child couldn't be their son's, as his seed or the part of the baby that has grown out of it would be dead too, so she wouldn't get pregnant.

Would love this as a thought experiment. So the basic rules: your wish is material so no "super powers" or "grant me knowledge". The wish can only create/alter things inside the room. Your wish cannot alter how the room works. Anything created by the room disintegrates when it leaves. The room cannot provide you with knowledge of the future (like lottery numbers). I would wish for something I could copy like a fantastic new novel (I might be able to conjure it on a disc or something and copy-paste to my computer , but even if that wouldn't work, just conjure it on paper then type it up myself). I could do this for all sorts, like plans and schematics and such. If the digital copy-paste method works then even better - I could make all sorts of fun things like graphics, novels, comics, games, applications and more. These can be published/sold/etc for money I could use outside - pay taxes, nights out, etc. I could create new houses within that room like extra dimensional spaces - my family could move in and have private mansions on private islands with everything they could need. It would be everything. Pure contentment. Bliss. Problem is, wouldn't be entertaining for a movie so of course the people in the movie had to be stupid about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, no one is mentioning the statement "The only thing more dangerous than a person who cant get what they want is the person who gets whatever they want." That's a horror story in real life.
Shane wins. He wished his parents ("parents") could never leave the room, that they were forever his, and that he would be around forever. The room made it their universe and it got creative about it.

I’m curious about what would happen if she wished for makeup, put it on, and then walked outside. Would her face just suddenly be covered in ashes and makeup free? that room is literally consequence free. They just brought it to themselves. if I were the one in their situation, I would have never ever left the house cause i have everything i need. food, everything! I can just literally live in the room itself, with just loopholing to get real life money so i can get some irl nights out if i really wanted some human company(but hey, who needs that when you got your wifus?) i'll just also renovate the house a bit so i can live a super modern life just never leaving? It's literally something worth but.. enters the "oh we want babies" and the "maybe we can do bla, bla, bla" people. I'm sure if they did that all hell would break loose as if you think about it imagine the entire INTERNET and PLANET heard some random couple who lived in the middle of nowhere with barely any security had a magical wish-granting closet that can do almost anything you wanted materialistically. Everyone would litrally go insane and practically it would even cause a massive fight over who gets to used it not to mention if there is a situation where someone wishes for a weapon and takes the closet hostage and wishes for a nuke or something crazy like that could also happen. Realitically this closet idea would never work as humans usually fuck things up but it's just a movie.

For example if you wished a cancer curing machine within the room, cured humans within the room using the technology and not directly a wish, then that change would remain permanent if you left the room. It's not like if you got stabbed by a knife that was requested in the room, that your knife wound heals when you leave the room.

Biggest plot hole is that the "supposed" locked-up killer told them the room made him do it. Didn't any of the authorities go into the room in question here? Did he tell them to make a wish in it as well? If so, I don't think that house ever goes up for sale afterwards.

If you wish for that, you'll just get a note saying, whoever wishes it must die, so then someone else would be taking the stuff outside. You would have to go out and look for a homeless guy that noone will miss. Make him wish for everything you want. Then kill him and you can take it all outside. Alternatively, you could use a person that's dying anyway and get them to do it. However, that might not work if they die of a natural death. Part of it is probably that it's evil magic, so a murder must be involved.
i'd love a Death Note-styled movie or series that works kinda like this -- an intelligent NEET or just some shut-in who happens to have The Room at his disposal, rules included, and essentially tries to mold the world to his liking while trying not to raise suspicion or evade people trying to take him down
Beating "The Room" is pretty easy - as long as you understand the rules: 1.) Whatever you wish for begins to decay as soon as you go outside. 2.) Once you learn this, figure out the rate of decay & determine whether or not it is a constant number. 3.) Once you know rate of decay, research materials of extreme value that have incredibly long shelf lives (ie - gold, diamonds, etc.) -a.) Once you wish for said materials, find a way to exchange them for real-world currency 4.) **Do not wish for anything organic - inanimate objects only** 5.) **Do not wish for anything you will likely become attached to** Incidentally, I find it very hard to believe that neither the man or the woman ever went outside with any of the stuff they wished for at the start of the story. They wished for money & clothes - you mean to tell me neither he nor she ever happened to walk outside wearing their slick new duds? Neither of them wished for like a hat or a watch - something they'd take outside without thinking about it? Really? Seriously, if Matt had just wished for a bitchin new jacket & went for a walk in his bitchin new jacket only to discover that said bitchin' new jacket dissolving right off of his body, this whole baby nonsense would've never happened. If either one of them played DnD, this whole story would've played out very differently.

Pretty sure as soon as i realised what the room did i would have wished for a manual on what the rules of the room are. Is there a price to pay later? Is there a way to expand the wish-gratnting area? Can we build a second house with a room like that? Can we stop our aging? Can the knowledge gained in the room be carried outside? If so could we just wish for a bunch of geniuses with their corresponding labs to solve all of humanity's problems and write the solutions down on non-room notebooks to share with everyone? So much knowledge just one wish away.
I think the point of the movie was that no matter what you wished, the ending outcome would be a fuckup no matter what. It would probably come back and bite you in the butt anyway. It's pretty much a D&D genie wish spell.

Here's one of the approaches I'd take ;- Step one : wish for all the important knowledge for humanity - knowledge on how to cure all diseases (cancer, aging, injury etc..) - how to build nanotech, teleportation etc... Step two: - make a physical copy of it and store it outside the house Step three : - use the knowledge to end all diseases and suffering make humanity an advanced post scarcity civilisation
You can't take out physical items but you can take out information So simply wish for useful information that you can use in the outside world e.g how to cure all diseases, How to become biologically immortal etc... Once you've got that info, copy it to a medium that wouldn't decay e.g a bunch of hard drives from the outside world Then boom, you can share that info with humanity, use it to become a billionaire etc.. This room is an absolute blessing. These characters were just super short sighted
@@asandax6 that could potentially negate your wishes, i.e. if the 'consequences'/cause and effect of making a wish is nullified that would result in manifesting 'nothing'. That's the only way to ensure 0% consequences, e.g. if he asked for money in his pocket, sure the money deteriorating would be nullified, but so would the all the other [passive] effects of making said [any] wish. The money wouldn't weigh anything, the paper wouldn't decompose, or be eligible for use (since a potential consequences could be arrested for money fraud/owning fake/printed money). The wish should nullify itself to guarantee no consequences. 😂

yes but she was already pregnant, since the tests need to be taken after some time. So the light shouldn't flicker after a couple of days but when the pregnancy started
I love how people love to feel like they are smart when met with such an opportunity but when it comes to reality we will all make the same mistake, I know I will make this mistake.
Well it matters on the things you want normally anyone will only wish for money or food at first or something else but you will probably find out all the rules soon cause a manual is one of the first thing that comes to the mind when someone tells you to leave the house as soon as possible and you will probably never go outside again cause there is no reason to be outside

Also there's no need to go outside. Just wish for a 1 to 1 mirror of the real outside world inside the room and live there as if you're outside because you'd not even recognize the difference.

You could also make your own universe and make yourself immortal. And not let other people wish. Afterwards you'd wish for adaptive and intelligent human beings and tell them of how their world has started and how you are the first human being. Tell them about your own world, in your own way of course. Then you could possibly tell them that you're on a mission to "bring humans back" and that your way is the right way. You could also wish for animals and plant life, smart and emotional children. You could, say, train those humans to teach the children your "truth" and start your own human civilization and society. Teach them abt agriculture, religion, etc. Then wait for these humans, which you've raised and wished to be extremely intelligent, to figure out that they actually live in a simulation created by you, for your own entertainment. See what types of reaction they'd give, see how long it takes, see if they'd just refuse to believe even though you've left the evidence and clues behind, see if they'd figure out ways to escape. You could also help them if you'd like, play victim. You could also broad cast the whole thing, then make people watch, make a profit out of it. There are so many ways to play with this room. So many different ideas that could clash, so many things that could go wrong. You could also go the other way around and make all the humans of your world extremely stupid. See how your world would turn out. You never know.

You could wish for plans and schematics for extremely advanced technologies like FTL drives, replicators, teleporters, etc... Then copy the schematics on paper that can leave the room. You could wish for a step by step plan to create a utopia on earth, or world peace, or a panacea. If a person wished for knowledge, it would be a much better use of the room than wishing for material things.

Honestly this would be awesome as a person that wouldn’t want anything to do with this world after finding the room. I would wish for an entirely different world fantasy adventure based and wish for the ability to be completely invulnerable to anything and just have a grand time!
while that sounds like a good idea, I would say that that's worse than real life. When you have all the power in the world, everything will become boring. The best representation of this IMO is saitama from onepunch, he's basically a god and no one can even scratch him, but with that power nothing is really a challenge. not having enough stress in your life can make you depressed
I only said I would be invulnerable, you know so I wouldn’t be blown to smitherines from a fireball. And the beauty of the room is that I could adjust anything I wanted to make it more enjoyable including removing said invulnerability whenever I wanted to. There is only a down side in the realization that none of it is truly real of course, but then again the person that it actually created could become real with the sacrifice of another. Also if you chose to create a word where time is different than the real world, you could in essence spend any amount of time in the room and have it not last but a moment in real time, thus losing nothing and gaining real knowledge that could be put to use in the real world, of course I don’t know the rules for how that would affect you as a real person.
Moral of the movie:If you get a room with the power to grand wishes,don't wish for anything that could turn against you. Or if you already did that,wish for a button that can erase all the other wishes by pressing it.
Why whenever people in movies are given the ability to wish for stuff they wish for some boring cliche things? They need to take a page out of Starlord’s book and start wishing for some interesting stuff. The only reason this is a horror movie is because these people couldn’t think beyond some paintings, money, and a baby. Bruh, I’d be wishing for characters from magical worlds and shiz. I’d invite my friends over and they’d be shocked to find Aslan and Princess Peach drinking blue milk from Stars Wars while My Little Pony and Girls Und Panzer characters have a Wii Sports tournament in the living room. Legit tho. Like there only seems to be consequences when you create "living" beings so everything else is on the table. You can legit bring anything else so you could make a mish mash of a bunch of your favorite places and put it into one room. You can travel the world in one room. A lot of the things they wish for are like things that probably nobody wants
And you would probably end up insane anyway. The idea is that absolute power messes up your mind, and desires magically obtained out of thin air without any effort will probably have a hidden cost. Ultimately, you shouldn't mess with something you don't fully understand, and everything has consequences and costs. These are simple concept that are the base for a lot of great stories. It's basically a sci-fi version of the classic genie's wish that ends up very badly no matter what you wish.

Honestly you can use this room to become super wealthy or enrich humanity, wish for things like the formula to cure cancer, plans for working cold fusion and hydrogen fuel cells, ect. Then you can wish for a potion to increase your intelligence so you can understand what you are doing, write/copy down the information on items form the real world like pen/paper, photos or just bring in your own laptop with wireless internet, then you can publish all your works.
Obviously a flawed movie with plenty of plot holes, but it's also an interesting concept with some thought provoking ideas. I especially loved how no explanation is given about who or how created the room or how it works, just wires and a mysterious power source.
It'd just be a matter of when that self control runs out, not if. I think that with such a room, the more wishes one makes, the more likely it is they lose self control, with a false sense of 'safety' increasing with every wish that turns out well.
There weren't even any real consequences for making wishes, and yet they still managed to mess it up

The ending of The Room shows Kate sitting in a Motel bed holding a pregnancy test with the look of horror on her face as the test shows positive. Right after this, the light flickers and the film ends in the real or dream ending style of Inception.
There is a popular theory that Shane is the creator of Kate’s baby, and because he died, the baby can live on. Kate now houses the essence of the Room in her womb. While it initially sounds correct, this theory is easily debunkable. Here’s why.
To explain the ending of The Room, let’s recap a few points:
Shane sexually assaulted Kate but was interrupted when Matt reached the house.
Kate leaves the house before Shane dies, she sees Shane walk away as an old man and fall over.
Fertilization in humans happens quite instantaneously after sex, the zygote enters the uterus in 3 to 5 days. In short, life is technically created quite instantly, but pregnancy tests get done when one misses the next menstrual cycle (about one month later).
Kate and Matt had sex the night before Shane’s assault.
Shane wasn’t able to go through with his assault on Kate. Even if he did impregnate her, Kate left the house before Shane died. Finally, let’s not forget that Matt and Kate did have sex the night before their terrible experience. Considering the four points above, we can safely conclude that the baby is Matt’s and they are free from The Room.

Would love this as a thought experiment. So the basic rules: your wish is material so no "super powers" or "grant me knowledge". The wish can only create/alter things inside the room. Your wish cannot alter how the room works. Anything created by the room disintegrates when it leaves. The room cannot provide you with knowledge of the future (like lottery numbers).
I would wish for something I could copy like a fantastic new novel (I might be able to conjure it on a disc or something and copy-paste to my computer , but even if that wouldn't work, just conjure it on paper then type it up myself). I could do this for all sorts, like plans and schematics and such. If the digital copy-paste method works then even better - I could make all sorts of fun things like graphics, novels, comics, games, applications and more. These can be published/sold/etc for money I could use outside - pay taxes, nights out, etc. I could create new houses within that room like extra dimensional spaces - my family could move in and have private mansions on private islands with everything they could need.

Pretty sure as soon as i realised what the room did i would have wished for a manual on what the rules of the room are. Is there a price to pay later? Is there a way to expand the wish-gratnting area? Can we build a second house with a room like that? Can we stop our aging? Can the knowledge gained in the room be carried outside? If so could we just wish for a bunch of geniuses with their corresponding labs to solve all of humanity's problems and write the solutions down on non-room notebooks to share with everyone? So much knowledge just one wish away.
I think the point of the movie was that no matter what you wished, the ending outcome would be a fuckup no matter what.

Step two:
- make a physical copy of it and store it outside the house
Step three :
- use the knowledge to end all diseases and suffering make humanity an advanced post scarcity civilisation
You can't take out physical items but you can take out information
So simply wish for useful information that you can use in the outside world e.g how to cure all diseases, How to become biologically immortal etc...
Once you've got that info, copy it to a medium that wouldn't decay e.g a bunch of hard drives from the outside world
Then boom, you can share that info with humanity, use it to become a billionaire etc..

Theoretically, you could wish to be omnipotent and then change the rules of the wishes made in the room (unless you can only wish for material things)
You could also make your own universe and make yourself immortal. And not let other people wish.
Afterwards you'd wish for adaptive and intelligent human beings and tell them of how their world has started and how you are the first human being. Tell them about your own world, in your own way of course. Then you could possibly tell them that you're on a mission to "bring humans back" and that your way is the right way. You could also wish for animals and plant life, smart and emotional children. You could, say, train those humans to teach the children your "truth" and start your own human civilization and society. Teach them abt agriculture, religion, etc.
Then wait for these humans, which you've raised and wished to be extremely intelligent, to figure out that they actually live in a simulation created by you, for your own entertainment.
See what types of reaction they'd give, see how long it takes, see if they'd just refuse to believe even though you've left the evidence and clues behind, see if they'd figure out ways to escape. You could also help them if you'd like, play victim. You could also broad cast the whole thing, then make people watch, make a profit out of it.
There are so many ways to play with this room. So many different ideas that could clash, so many things that could go wrong.
You could also go the other way around and make all the humans of your world extremely stupid. See how your world would turn out. You never know.

You could wish for plans and schematics for extremely advanced technologies like FTL drives, replicators, teleporters, etc... Then copy the schematics on paper that can leave the room. You could wish for a step by step plan to create a utopia on earth, or world peace, or a panacea. If a person wished for knowledge, it would be a much better use of the room than wishing for material things.

while that sounds like a good idea, I would say that that's worse than real life. When you have all the power in the world, everything will become boring. The best representation of this IMO is saitama from onepunch, he's basically a god and no one can even scratch him, but with that power nothing is really a challenge. not having enough stress in your life can make you depressed
I only said I would be invulnerable, you know so I wouldn’t be blown to smitherines from a fireball. And the beauty of the room is that I could adjust anything I wanted to make it more enjoyable including removing said invulnerability whenever I wanted to. There is only a down side in the realization that none of it is truly real of course, but then again the person that it actually created could become real with the sacrifice of another. Also if you chose to create a word where time is different than the real world, you could in essence spend any amount of time in the room and have it not last but a moment in real time, thus losing nothing and gaining real knowledge that could be put to use in the real world, of course I don’t know the rules for how that would affect you as a real person.

Why whenever people in movies are given the ability to wish for stuff they wish for some boring cliche things? They need to take a page out of Starlord’s book and start wishing for some interesting stuff.
The only reason this is a horror movie is because these people couldn’t think beyond some paintings, money, and a baby. Bruh, I’d be wishing for characters from magical worlds and shiz. I’d invite my friends over and they’d be shocked to find Aslan and Princess Peach drinking blue milk from Stars Wars while My Little Pony and Girls Und Panzer characters have a Wii Sports tournament in the living room. Legit tho. Like there only seems to be consequences when you create "living" beings so everything else is on the table. You can legit bring anything else so you could make a mish mash of a bunch of your favorite places and put it into one room. You can travel the world in one room. A lot of the things they wish for are like things that probably nobody wants

The idea is that absolute power messes up your mind, and desires magically obtained out of thin air without any effort will probably have a hidden cost.
Ultimately, you shouldn't mess with something you don't fully understand, and everything has consequences and costs. These are simple concept that are the base for a lot of great stories.
It's basically a sci-fi version of the classic genie's wish that ends up very badly no matter what you wish.

Honestly you can use this room to become super wealthy or enrich humanity, wish for things like the formula to cure cancer, plans for working cold fusion and hydrogen fuel cells, ect.
Then you can wish for a potion to increase your intelligence so you can understand what you are doing, write/copy down the information on items form the real world like pen/paper, photos or just bring in your own laptop with wireless internet, then you can publish all your works.
You can only wish for things. Not knowledge.
Obviously a flawed movie with plenty of plot holes, but it's also an interesting concept with some thought provoking ideas. I especially loved how no explanation is given about who or how created the room or how it works, just wires and a mysterious power source.
