- Ann has been living a secluded life on her family farm, coming to terms with the fact that she may be the only survivor of an apocalyptic event which has been God's will. One day, John stumbles into the valley in his failing anti-radiation suit. I had a similar experience. I had to spend a week in hospital. I'm still quite young, I was 28 at the time surrounded by mostly old people. I'm also average looking so I was making some nice conversation with some of the female nurses, who pretty much were all beautiful. Since they likely were not used to younger people on the ward my presence was likely a welcome change. So for 2 days I was enjoying the attention.
On day 3 this Greek God Adonis looking guy who could be a supermodel was admitted to the bed opposite mine. Needless to say I didn't get any more attention for the rest of my hospital stay.

See. That's assuming that she would've had children with John, and not just leave at some point in search of other survivors. The stupid thing about this is the premise of lust and jealousy wedging itself between an otherwise good situation. If these three are the only survivors for miles, then they could have had a couple generations of kids, without the need for biological incest, and then with a large enough village, some members could create a search party for other survivors to expand their gene pool. Instead, they let petty jealousy and selfishness get in the way. That lack of maturity is what'll eventually lead to their demise. The LDS church are Christians, and they've greatly increased their own population with the "multiple wives strategy." Some cultures around the world also share wives, i.e. "multiple husbands" strategy. These people are just too self-righteous and pious to see the greater good for the group instead of the individual. Are you trying to save your people and survive or are you trying to get your way?

John did not killed Caleb, he saved him once and save him again when Caleb tried to fall on purpose. He wanted to test how good John was, Caleb did a creepy smirk the second time John was trying to pull him and that means that he understand that John was trustworthy and more deserving than himself. They both moved the piano then Caleb left, he left because John convinced him that he wasn't good for Ann. John was heartbroken after Ann went out to find Caleb so he went to the fountain then jumped. Ann saw him and was sad from what happened (she pushed the glass from the table part). Last part was John's soul watching Ann playing the piano. John looked happy, Caleb unknown, Ann lonely for being alone again. This is how I see what happened

I remember reading the short story as a kid, it was one of my favourite post-apocalyptic scifis at the time. They did change it quite a bit though, especially the ending which had Ann taking John's hazmat suit and cart and leaving to find a another place for herself to live in, leaving the valley to John.

Pretty sure the book ended completely differently with the main character female killing the dude who arrived in the beginning. Because the radiation from swimming in the water started to melt his brain and he went psycho on her and tried to kill her. She took his suit and climbed over the rocky hills and the book ends with her just traveling alone
The movie lost me at first wearing a hazmat suit until it's safe and then jumping in the first pool of water without checking it first. It is clear for any scientist and any vaguely smart person, that the ground and especially the water is most contaminated since the rain will carry radioactive particles down to earth.

At the end of the day, though John was skilled at many things, he didn't take the chance to be with Anne before Caleb comes in. Caleb was more useless, but at the same time he really wasn't bad. John never gave Caleb much of a chance due to jealousy. Anne did seem to make a few mistakes as well, such as leaving John in the dark about their relationship and going full steam ahead with Caleb whom she knows for less time. She also decides to tear down the building due to a push from Caleb yet John decided to leave it standing due to understanding Anne's sentimentality for it.
Anne needed to decide between one or the other and to tell the other straight first before things are taken too far.
But whatever the case, John is ultimately at fault if he killed Caleb. Caleb never wished to harm anyone, and John had a streak of anger issues. Tearing down the building too was not something I personally would have done. For one, Caleb suggesting it technically lead to his own death, if John killed him. For another, if Caleb was indeed another Christian, tearing down a literal Church is not something a Christian normally does. If it isn't required to survive, then it shouldn't have to be torn down. You can always find resources elsewhere, such as in the trees.
Overall, it seems they all are at fault for what happened. Even Caleb is at fault, as he never seemed to ask what the relationship between John and Anne was before getting intimate with Anne.

It was explained in the book that john had wandered for a long time encountering no-one before finding the valley that Ann lived in, shielding her from the deadly radiation.
The whole point of the book being called Z for Zachariah is that it's a biblical reference to the name of the last man. In the book It's just Ann and John. John gradually becomes better after soaking in a radioactive stream and asserts control over the household eventually attempting to rape Ann who injures him and runs away into the hills to hide. He uses her own dog to hunt for her and she steals his special hazmat suit and escapes the valley presumably never to return.
I always assumed the ending was a literal interpretation of John being the last man because ann refused him. They changed the entire plot in this O.o

You have land thats not infected, a house that has power and food, and another human (of the opposite gender). Can you risk losing all that if you leave these 2 and go off on your own? If you are talking about the fuel they got for the tractor that runs on diesel which can sit for very very long periods of time and still be good.
1. Tractors run on diesel. 2. Gas without added ethanol does not run bad too quickly - especially if in a container that is well sealed. 3. With ethanol the problem is water that ethanol attracts - you can just let old gas separate into layers and scoop from top the good stuff.

I've read the book (Z for Zachariah) as a kid. And Caleb was not in the story. John was pretty much the same and just as awkward if not more. John made multiple unwanted sexual advances on the MC making things extremely awkward between the two (even though there was growing attraction between the two, John escalated prematurely though). Margo eventually takes John's radiation suit and abandons him at her farm as she seeks refuge elsewhere.
It's better than wait till he enslave her in the house for sex.
Neither stories come off great for John.

Caleb didn't just sweep in and steal Ann from John. Ann didn't belong to John. Caleb didn't steal her from John because she wasn't John's to steal. Ann chose Caleb because they had things in common. They were more compatible. And because Caleb pursued her. He was proactive while John was passive. Ann literally owed John nothing.
Maybe you think guys who end up with the girl you want deserve to die, but they don't. You need to actually learn how to properly court a woman, instead of hoping a woman sees your value and rewards you by dragging you to bed. That isn't going to happen. Life isn't a coming of age movie.
