Absolutely one of my favourite GnR song. So much wisdom in the lyrics and a rocking riff and tempo!
I love this song but it gives me a sad feeling,like your coming into a new level of life and that your leaving your former happy go lucky kind of life. This song and album was played in the burial march of my eldest brother. We both love gn'r and he introduced and influenced me w/this band and gave me a drive to learn to play guitar.It's sad and happy remembering good memories listening w/him w/ all their songs.

Always thought the song (or parts of it) are about the band.

The whole song is about the band and axl and how he can’t really deal with the pressures he faced at the time causing his breakdowns, at least I think haha
I was at the MSG show in 1991 where they played breakdown..
oh so jealous, i was only 5 then. Did a lot people in the crowd know what song it was?
surprisingly yes... i had opportunity to see them on AFD tour, UYI tour MSG with Soundgarden, and with MEtallica and Faith No More in Giant Stadium. I also saw Slash ft Myles Kennedy little did I know 6 months later they'd be back together. I was damn near front rown for Slash show. They did A LOT of AFD stuff.

They just booked new dates on Europe. I went to the garden and it was outrageous. I went all three nights in 1991 - like no time went by.

I recently heard a short of breakdown, celebrating Axel‘s birthday recently. It caught my attention and brought me back to what I was experiencing at the time 30 years ago. So yes, breakdown was not only underrated at the time, but it brought me back to a place of where everything did in fact, turn out roses, when I held onto the guns. So for me the song. Has some deep, personal memories, both good and bad times, and everything turned out good

I have not listened to "Use your Illusion Vol 1 & 2 yet". I cut it off back when he started paying for B52bombers and dolphins and aircraft carriers. Everything from UziSuicide through Lies was enough for me. And it's an incredible collection. I saw the videos that followed, November rain, live Knocking on Heavens Door, some shit with the Terminator, and dropped off at the audio version of Sympathy for the Devil.
But your video makes me realize that there's a large amount of music that I haven't payed attention to but that I will probably like. So I'm excited, thanks. I'm going into the outer space dolphins era bro. Terminators and aircraft carriers man.
yeah use your illusion era GNR were definitely bloated, but give UYI albums a listen. They are definitely bloated with filler, but there's also some great songs on there. I feel like they could have made a great single album had they removed the filler (i.e. my world, shotgun blues, bad apples, etc.)

Can I also just say that I was twerkin up a storm when I got the buzz for this one, i just wish I could have watched much earlier. Thank you for another great in depth look. Oh one more request if you haven't done it already...Civil War, that one holds a very special place for me.
"some shit with the Terminator"... You mean You Could Be Mine?? One of their best songs that was written well before the UYI albums. I think you've been missing out on some good music man.
Don't bother.
A large chunk of the songs on UYI (especially UYI 1) are actually older than, or just as old, as the songs on Appetite. Back Off Bitch, Don't Cry, November Rain, Yesterdays, The Garden, Bad Obsession, the list goes on. Also, the UYI albums showed just how great of a songwriter Izzy Stradlin was. And West Arkeen, too, for that matter.

So, I'll only make one comment. I'm getting ready to release many books. I've been writing the majority of them 3 years, one of them 12 years, my lifelong project, and you will see them on the big screen someday. I am inspired to death by music, and sometimes listen to a song 40 or 50 times in a row, to gain inspiration into a book or chapter. I do not take drugs, music is enough of a drug for me. I've listened to Breakdown the last 3 days in my car, (on a Flashdrive), in fact, if you steal my car tonight, you will have it playing as you drive away, but also an AR shooting at you, lol. The lyrics and the driving beat, changes in styles and rhythms place it third on my list of GNR songs, behind only November Rain and Sweet Child of Mine....but, how could you possibly leave off so many others? I do agree that Sympathy for the Devil was a failure, all you have to do is listen to Disturbed remakes to know that GNR version just wasn't very good. However in 1991 or 1992, I recall reading comments of the GNR concert in Seattle, and people were calling radio stations calling Axl a God. No doubt the band will never be forgotten

Breakdown is one of the best GNR song and i agree with you that it sits somewere in the top 10. Its more of a obscure song that only real GNR fan knows tho..So its not suprising they rank it so low and that they rank something like Sweet child o mine number 1.

"GUN" is often a HEROIN NEEDLE Metaphor used by addicts, perhaps "funny how everything was ROSES when we held onto the GUN" ...tho' an obvious play on the bands name is actually referencing their early days an how the irony was tho' they were lil more than junkies and barely surviving trying to make it as a band their lives were pretty drama free an "Roses"... comparatively speaking.
