Living so close to the ocean, this is a fishing opportunity I just haven't taken advantage of yet. Maybe this is the summer. I'd love to see more SRC videos.
There are some amazing ocean opportunities for sure - tough fishery in the PNW (big surf) but can really produce if you can find a sheltered area. Will do on the SRC vids!
Hi FlyFishDan. That beach is a short walk from my house, the train was the giveaway. I wish I had known you were down there! SRC's are a really fun fish to target, but they have been tough this year. I think this is the first video I've seen you get skunked, but in a way, I'm glad to see that even the mighty FlyFishDan is human after all. Fish On!!
Thank you Neil - it is a challenging fishery for sure! I am definitely just that - human. I snag trees in my backcast, break off flies on rocks behind me, snag the bottom and even break rods with the best of them :)) Yesterday I had to re-rig an entire new setup due to a nasty tangle caused by a lazy cast - OY! Thank you for your support Neil!
Thanks Dan, I've fished SRC for roughly the last 20 years. They are an amazing species and it is nice with salmon/steelhead declines having options for fly fishing. They are becoming more popular to fish for, but still a relatively unknown species for most fly anglers.
I have done the same - usually from a boat, but since selling my boat (because salmon declines) I am now targeting from the more challenging beaches. Fun fishery for sure. Cheers!
Nice vid, thanks for sharing. Yep...it's certainly not about catching fish...liked your enthusiasm about managing expectations. Really beautiful out there.
Hey there Dan,… I see you bought into the Lamson Liquid & Remix line …. Great choice for the money…! I got both Remix & Liquid 8/9/10 wt. I’ve seen and used expensive reels … yes,.. they’re very and well made but at the end of the day,… it’s done it’s job to hold an retrieve your line … anyways… cool videos….. 👍😎🤙
I caught my first few sea run cutts in Puget Sound last year. I didn't have any luck casting into the bay like you were, but I found a creek coming into the sound at low tied with some really small sea run cutts rising to dries. I broke out my Sage 1wt and some parachute adams. Caught a couple little 5-6" and then hooked into a 12" sea run! Not a huge sea run, but it was a LOT of fun on that little 1wt!
That is awesome! Great story - salt water dries?? Crazy! It can be a challenging but rewarding fishery for sure. You just have to keep at it and you'll eventually find them. Cheers!
Great scenery along the way. Sounds like Muskie fishing, the fish of 10,000 casts... My arm still hurts thinking about it. Thanks Dan for the Video, Fish On.
I thought I caught all of those when I was a boy :) Glad to hear they are still an active fishery. There were four little streams like the one you were walking beside that held cutt’s close to where I lived: Richmond Beach, Edmonds, Talbot Park and Meadowdale. I caught hundreds of them, probably, both in the streams and at the mouths of those creeks. I had the streams and the beaches to myself, and didn’t know how good I had it. Question: I returned to Meadowdale for the first time in 35+years a while ago, and was dismayed to find it dry. It always held water when I was a kid, even at the driest part of the year. Has pavement and storm water systems dried up many of the feeder creeks that held the cutts and sea-run dollies that I fished for? I would imagine that those trout would not be seeking streams that are intermittent in their flow, and perhaps a bit of research to find out if they are continuous would increase your chances. It was always tough to hook a cutt when they were in the salt. Once in the streams they were terribly aggressive.
That is certainly tough to hear about your childhood fishing spots. Many of mine have suffered the same as we continue to expand as a community. There are still spots out there that consistently hold fish - just takes time to discover those spots. Thanks for commenting and taking the time to watch - cheers!
Great video of course up here in Metro Vancouver lots of places to catch the Sea run Cutties , Also the mouth of the Fraser river right beside the Vancouver Airport Dolly Vardens , I grew up on Vancouver Island in Victoria the Metro Victoria area is a hot spot for them also and any stream going into the ocean on Vancouver island
A lot of times they are right off the shore, I start by casting at a 45-degree angle...then work my way straight out. 50-80-foot casts typically. Thanks for watching Dale!
So the only spot in the World 🌍 to find these fish is the 2000 mile stretch of beach 🏖️ near the state of Washington 😂 Just kidding! Dang! I was waiting for a strike. RIO! Going to have to try it. Been using the cheaper stuff and I noticed others kinda flick their wrist and the line fly's out there while I wrench my whole body to get as close. Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
@FlyFishDan thanks.....do you find a 6 weight a little overgunned for sea run cutthroat or is it because your chucking a poppers.....I use a 5 weight and some guys are using 3 or 4 weight
No problem-I've recently designed a fly rod specifically for SRC fishing. Typically, when dealing with wind, heavier flies, and the opportunity to catch resident Blackmouth or bull, the 6wt is the ideal tool to use. If you'd like to take a look at it, visit my website at fishonrods.com

Cool video! We went deep sea fishing recently. Hoping to start making some more content soon now that the weather is getting nicer.
Thanks and sweet! Cheers!
Nice choice with the setup. I have the 5wt. Sage and i love it.
Thank you Big Ron! The owner of the fly shop set that one aside...he knew that would be my choice :))

Thanks Aaron - been a great reel so far for sure!
Great spirit!

Dan again great video, curious if a Gurgler Fly might work 🤷🏻♂️,beautiful scenery & place, tight lines & bent rods 🤙
Perhaps - I’ll give it a try! Thanks for tuning in!

They can be tough for sure - the new shooting head line will help keep my arm out of trouble for sure. Cheers!
Not really. Because once you find em you hook 50

How far are you casting from shore?

My first Fish on a fly Rod was resident Coho on a Miyawaki Popper that I bought from Leland while he worked at Orvis in Bellevue.
Leland is a legend!!
Looks like you got a chance to fish Delia's Conehead Squid. Easy tie and has brought me several nice fish to hand. Enjoy the salt!
Nice! Let's hope I can cast it in front of a hungry SRC!
Here in the east coast that type of trout is only in MASS and NH VT CONN NY state not in Rhode Island.

Love the content but I think you are being a *little* liberal with the words "one place" lmao
I didn’t want to be too specific and give away my spot. Lol
I am 20 minutes from the ocean in Surrey BC.......2 good rivers run through farmland 5 minutes drive from my house
That sounds pretty awesome!

@FlyFishDan nice rods but with 4 and 8 year old boys my budget is more like a 100 dollar fenwick 4 piece Aetos.....good mid level rod
