I was looking at that preserve on Google Earth. Interestingly when the photo on Google Earth was taken it captured a boat and its gill net set from the shore for a what looks to be a couple of hundred yards. The net was probably set for coho and the size of the net is perfect for capturing large cutthroat, as well as salmon. One of the reason large cutties are rare in the canal.
Thanks for your comment. For me, fish have yet to really show up in the northern part of the Sound/Hood canal. I think the South Sound will be your best bet!
That beach is kind of a long drive for me but I fish it when we stay at cottages in the area. Yes the hike is long but that limits the number of visitors. I noticed you had backpack. Mine has a large mesh back pocket with an integrated chest pack. No need for chest waders on the beach so I roll up my smaller - lighter pant waders and carry them in the mesh pocket. I also carry a featherweight Tyvek changing mat, some waterproof socks and lightweight Korkers KlingOn soles for hiking in-out and studded soles for fishing that makes the hike more comfortable.
The only time I spot them is if they swim right up by my legs or, obviously, if they swirl or jump at the surface. Even though the water is often extremely clear, the bottom usually consists of rocks or rounded stones, and there's generally some sort of ripple on the water - the SRC are just incredibly difficult to see from a low angle in those circumstances.
Nice , Have you ever fish Purdy ? I was there yesterday and lots really big ones are jumping out the water , but are playing hard to get . I would be a great addition to your youtube series
I think it'll take me years to find and enjoy all the great fishing beaches we have! You guys in the south sound definitely seem to have the best action in the early season.

Nice. Glad you finally got to that spot to fish it. It is an amazing place. 9 out of 10 people would never make that walk. See you soon on a beach.

I have fished Hood Canal many times. Sometimes I catch a CT or two. But even when I don',.t the place and experience is worth the effort.
