Doctor Smith was definitely my favorite character in Lost in Space. I was born in 1969 so I got to watch the reruns of Lost in Space when I would get out of school in the 1970's. I just loved watching this show. There was just something incredible about alot of those shows that were made in the 1960's. When tried to be remade later on, it just didn't work. Only on the big screen did some have good success. What a great actor he was. His character would steal scenes away from the other actors. That's how great he was. RIP 🙏

I grew up in same Bronx neighborhood as Harris, and loved Lost in Space from its very first episode. I remember being pissed that my dad had tix for us to see Mickey Mantle and Yankees a few blocks away - during the first airing of "The War of the Robots" episode. This was long before Betamax, VHS, DVD, DVR. So I chose the Yankees. Oh, the pain, the pain.

I love the fact that Jonathan Harris created his own image, and not only acted it, but LIVED it in real life. This incredibly creative actor created his own image from the ground up. I love the fact that he was from Brooklyn or the Bronx, yet forced himself to speak in a very cultured accent by watching only British movies, and emulating their accent until he got it right and felt 100% comfortable doing it...so that it would come naturally to the point where he actually forgot he actually had a NY accent, and the cultured voice was the only one he used, both on camera and off.

ONe thing that stands out about Jonathan Harris was that he embraced Dr. Smith. Even years later. He didn't spend the rest of his life trying to ditch the character, even though that was what he was primarily known for. He was proud of giving the character the personality Smith had. Some people make fun of how stupid and silly Dr. Smith was, but fact is, you remember the character to this day.

      Brian Hey Bri...
This is what I know as fact.
Mr. Harris himself saved the show and was the cause of the ratings to go up, changing his character was all his idea. The show was in competition with the old Batman TV show as a family show for kids even though it started out as serious scifi adventure, sadly it went camp. The show was cancelled because of lower ratings and they wanted to cut back the budget and because Irwin Allen had clashes with the brass and he , Allen also wanted to concentrate on other projects as well like movies.
It wasn't the rags idea of trying to out Harris It was based on what June Lockhart said in three old LIS conventions and at her autograph table about Mr. Harris' sexuality, personality and her views of the Dr. Smith character. She would joke about the Dr. Smith character and "implied" several times that he was an old Pedophile.
If you want to blame anyone, blame her very brassy opinionated mouth however what she said at the conventions she said very nonchalantly very matter of fact as if it was all common knowledge about his sexuality and there was no reaction at all from the audience. Lockhart and Harris did not get along they both had very dominant personalities even on stage at conventions as if they were both the spokesperson for the show.
Harris was sooooo popular at the cons that he eventually sat by himself separate from the cast at his own table, sometimes in a separate room just to accommodate all his fan lines and went on stage separately for his Q&A

Can you blame an actor for wanting to have work in the morning? He changed he Dr. Smith character because he knew that they way it was written, it was clearly not going to last. How the hell do you live on a ship, all the time, no way out, with a guy who legit tried to kill you? Harris did what he felt was needed to give the character more dimension than "standard bad guy".

+Ron Tor Yeah. I said; You are one of the greatest actors in the world and he said: Yes I know and then he shook his head and laughed. He really was a humble man and was the nicest of the whole cast. I met all except of course Guy Williams. This was somewhere around 2002-5. He had a hostile face when he told us that he wouldn't play in that Fking piece of Sht. I agreed. I guess it's not good for an actor who played in the original to downplay a new production.

Dr Smith was a major Eff up on Lost in Space, but he effing up was what made the show a classic.

Jonathan Harris was a first class act. Loved him as a kid and was saddened as an adult when he passed away.
