    • @jmccracken1963

      +djkrushinphx He was, indeed, a great guy - and a much-decorated World War II hero, too (up to and including the Purple Heart, for his heroism as a bomber pilot in the South Pacific). After a "wartime marriage" which lasted only 5 years (1943-1948), he was happily married "till death do us part" twice: the first time for 30 and a half years (July 1949 until his wife Kay's death in January of 1980; two children) and the second time for almost 32 years (May 1982 until his death of kidney failure on 16 January 2014; one stepchild). Check out his IMDB profile.
      His movie and TV career spanned from 1950 to 1997. While he appeared in a lot of movies (both big-screen and made-for-TV) and TV series (mostly dramatic) over those years, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND was the second and last TV series in which he played a regular series character for a number of years. The first had been the Western drama BLACK SADDLE, in which he played Marshal Gib Scott, and which aired 20 episodes on NBC (on Saturday evenings) as a mid-season replacement show from January through May of 1959, and which aired another 24 episodes on ABC (on Friday evenings), running the length of the 1959-1960 TV season. He co-starred with Peter Breck and Anna-Lisa on that series. (Yes, he did have a recurring role as an Assistant District Attorney on OWEN MARSHALL, COUNSELOR AT LAW on ABC in the early 1970s, but that was only 8 episodes over the span of 2 years. And yes, he did appear for a while on DAYS OF OUR LIVES in 1980 and on SANTA BARBARA in 1991, but not long-long-term.)
      I've seen a couple of movies from very early in his career in which he had an uncredited bit part (RANCHO NOTORIOUS (1952), in which he plays a Chuck-A-Luck wheel spinner early in the movie, and THE TURNING POINT (1952), in which he plays one of the heavies (I think); the latter film was, and hopefully still is, floating around somewhere on TH-cam and is well worth the watch). I have also seen him in a substantial credited part in the 1954 Western RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO (which stars Audie Murphy (also a much-decorated World War II hero, serendipitously), Dan Duryea, Susan Cabot, Abbe Lane, Paul Birch, Jack Elam, and Denver Pyle); this movie may also still be floating around TH-cam somewhere, and, if it is, it is WELL worth watching!

      Guy Williams, at the time, like George Reeves' Superman -- will always be the original Zorro for me.
      He was also part of the cast of the classic TV western Bonanza in 1964 as Ben Cartwright's nephew. Cast, for a brief time -- the character was written out after 5 episodes because of production politics and B/S. It's a shame because the episodes I saw Guy in were quite good.
      I never figured out the true politics crap -- he was a name actor, lots of success on his acting resume, handsome and recognizable, probably could've carried the show himself if Lorne Greene wasn't the father. I sometimes wonder if his Argentine good looks would've competed too much with Pernell Roberts (who had hair in 1964) and Michael Landon. Maybe they pressured the producers not to have him join the cast. His 6'3 muscular frame certainly competed with Dan Blocker -- so they could've been Cartwright relatives.

    Funny, I recall reading once where Billy Mumy, I believe, during an interview, said that Lost in Space was always being compared to Star Trek. He went on to say that it should have been compared to Gilligan's Island especially after the 1st season where it went from being a somewhat serious show to comedic farce. Nice to see Guy Williams; RIP to him and all of the other great actors/actresses from both shows there who are no longer with us.

      DALE COOPER There is actually quite a few similarities between LIS and GI
      Both were CBS mid sixties series. Both had pilot episodes weren't used but which contained footage added to the regular series run. Both premises feature 7 stranded people, 4 men 3 women. Both had one married couple. Both ran 3 seasons (1 B&W/2 color). Both were successful publicly but got rather negative reviews. Both featured "visitors" who offered help but ultimately left them still stranded. Each had one character who always fouled things up. Both series were cancelled even though they were still getting decent ratings. Both series originally ended without resolution. And both did well in syndication and have a large fan-base. There's more but that's what I could come up with at the moment.

It was a whole different time then, that's why. The only people who were freaked out by it back then were the blue haired old granny types and the southern racists because yes, Richard kissed ALL the ladies regardless of race or age. There was nothing wrong with it. Sure beats all the backstabbing and bitchy shows that are on nowadays.

      Absolutely correct Suzibird307. It was one of those you had to live in the era things. Prior to the Feud, many of us who were around back then, already knew him as a cast member on Hogans Heroes. • @Suzibird307

      uh, sweetie...you need to get out more often. It's a common phrase referring to the old ladies with white hair who go to salons to get it coloured and end up with blue, sometimes pink or sometimes even purplish unintended highlights because white/grey hair doesn't take colour too well. Google it if you don't believe me. Ask a beautician if you don't believe me. Watch "Are you being served?" if you don't believe me. Mrs. Slocomb on that show played up that stereotype really comically. Don't criticize what you don't know, luv. For the record, NO...I was not high at all during the 70's...I was just a kid. A few "quick hits" on this episode:
    1. "Name an Alfred Hitchcock movie." Notice that Angela Cartwright names THE BIRDS (1962) - which happens to be the Hitchcock film that her older sister, Veronica Cartwright, was one of the principals in the cast. (Veronica played Cathy Brenner, the much-younger sister of Mitch Brenner (played by Rod Taylor). She was 13 years old at the time, just one year after she had played another great movie role - namely, that of Rosalie Wells in the outstanding 1961 United Artists film version of Lillian Hellman's play THE CHILDREN'S HOUR.)
    2. "Name an Alfred Hitchcock movie." I'm pretty sure that Guy Williams had STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951) in mind when he answered LADY ON A TRAIN. But there is a very good 1945 Universal movie titled LADY ON A TRAIN, with Deanna Durbin, Dan Duryea, Ralph Bellamy, Edward Everett Horton, Allen Jenkins, David Bruce, George Coulouris, Patricia Morison, Elizabeth Patterson, and William Frawley among the outstanding ensemble cast. It's well worth watching - and it is available on DVD.
    3. "Name a magazine that gives people advice on how to improve their love lives." I had to laugh out loud to hear the answer "Hustler" given by June Lockhart, of all people. And I was surprised when it wasn't one of the listed answers to the survey!
    4. Russell Johnson is very much in his actor/"Professor" persona in the lightning round - but he's also very good in his choice of answers, as is Dawn Wells, and that persona works!
    5. Does anybody know which five cast members from HAWAIIAN EYE were on their FAMILY FEUD team? (They appear on set at the end, when the amount which each team raised for their designated charity was announced.) I know who was on the GILLIGAN'S ISLAND and LOST IN SPACE teams (obviously) and the BATMAN team (I've seen the FF episode which pits the BATMAN team against the GILLIGAN'S ISLAND team, and which aired the day before this episode), but not HAWAIIAN EYE. I recognize Connie Stevens, and I think Troy Donahue and Poncie Ponce as well, but not the other two or three. Douglas Mossman, perhaps? Anthony Eisley? Mel Prestridge? Robert Conrad (though I doubt it)? Grant Williams? Well, let me know if you know......

    Jim Backus from back in his movie days, in such films as M (the 1951 American remake), HALF ANGEL, DEADLINE - U.S.A, PAT AND MIKE, DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK, THE SQUARE JUNGLE, MEET ME IN LAS VEGAS, JOHNNY COOL, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD, and THE WHEELER DEALERS (all of which are well worth your watching), as well as his many "Mr. Magoo" cartoons - but not, oddly enough, either of the sitcoms in which he starred before GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (I MARRIED JOAN (1952-1955) and THE JIM BACKUS SHOW (1960-1961);
    Natalie Schafer from back in her movie days, in such movies as WONDER MAN, DISHONORED LADY, THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, THE SNAKE PIT, and TAKE CARE OF MY LITTLE GIRL (all of which are well worth watching);
    Russell Johnson from back in his movie days, principally as Jed Ringer in RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO (well worth your watching), but also in an uncredited part in the 1952 film THE TURNING POINT (also well worth your watching). Not being a fan of science-fiction movies, I have not seen THIS ISLAND EARTH or IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, both of which featured him as one of the co-stars in the cast.
    And the others here? I can't really say that I've seen any of them in anything from movies or TV before GILLIGAN'S ISLAND or LOST IN SPACE, though I have seen Dawn Wells as Miss Lorilee Lee in the 1983 made-for-TV movie HIGH SCHOOL, U.S.A. (She was one of quite a number of TV sitcom icons from the 1950s and 1960s who played roles ranging from cameo parts to integral parts of the cast in that very funny film. By all means, watch it if you can find it (heck, it might even be up on TH-cam!); you'll have a great time doing so.
    But I hope that I've pointed some of you in directions that may lead you to some "video treasures" that you might not have known about - or, if you did know about them but haven't thought about them in a while, then maybe prodded your memory and made you think about watching them for a first time (or another time).

      You are forgetting a minor point of tv trivia: 2 of the Gilligan's Island cast members were guests on the same 60s CBS show....Wild, Wild, West, though not the same episode. Alan Hale Jr. actually played a US Secret Service agent and I forget what exactly Dawn Wells did on her episode, perhaps "damsel in distress" ?
      Russell Johnson, in his earliest roles played a heavy of sorts, though I am not able to say where I would have seen him without an assist from Wiki.
      And yes, Jim Backus played the father of James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.
