This is not a 1953 Pontiac Chieftain, it is a 1953 Pontiac Catalina in the exclusive to that top of the line model’s Milano Ivory colored roof with Laurel Green body. It is equipped with the optional wire wheel hub caps, but is missing its rear wheel well fender skirts which the optional wire wheels were designed to allow to be kept in place unlike some other manufacturer’s fender skirt equipped models when fitted out with their optional wire wheels. An example of that deficiency which the ‘53 Pontiac models did not have would be the 1962 to 1963 Ford Thunderbird Roadsters.

Interesting! Thank you for the correction! It was presented as a Chieftain at this spring cruise. Thank you for watching!

Here's my understanding of the matter: There were two levels of Catalina Chieftain in 1953 - the Catalina Deluxe Chieftain, (one of which I've had for 43 years, went to church in yesterday, and used for a mundane job today), and the Custom Catalina, available only in the colors of this example, although they could be reversed. The Customs had wider trim at the front of the C pillar, and leather seats as distinctive upgrades. I don't think I'd call the restricted colors an upgrade, but it was exclusive. For the final word, consult Charles Coker.

ironsidefan It actually looks much better WITHOUT those rear skirts! So did those T Birds.

Sorry, you are the one who is wrong. All of the 1953 Pontiac Chieftain, and Catalina models are my absolute first love, lifetime favorite cars. I am as old as they are, and I’ve studied the hell out of everything I can get my hands on regarding them for many years. Your brochure link proves that you are wrong even visually. That car’s color scheme in this video was absolutely exclusive to the Custom Catalina Coupes and no other model produced anywhere. That owner, removed that Custom Catalina Coupe’s fender skirts.

@@ironsidefan ... I haven’t studied the vehicle, per se, but I know what one looks like. I road in my mom’s green four door Chieftain for at least six years in the 50’s. I know this shade of green is wrong, for sure. I know my greens; I used to paint those cars in my dad’s body shop. I even remember paint codes, ie, Ermine White was #4024 from DuPont. A beautiful car and THANK YOU everyone for the comments.

My dad had a '51 back in the day a year before I was born('52). We have pictures of me asleep in the car seat as a baby. His looked a lot like this one but was black. BTW, that clear amber Indian head hood ornament would light up at night. One always knew when meeting one at night because of that tell-tale amber hood ornament glowing between the headlights!

YES! The hood ornament. We had one too.

My grandfather had a near identical car in 1953. He would let me sit on his lap and help drive.

Han Schenk My Uncle Joe had the exact same one as this, but it was a darker green. He passed away on April 17, 2017, and sadly it was sold in auction. I wish I had it.
