18 Common Mistakes Dog Owners Make

  • In this video, we'll talk about the top 18 common mistakes dog owners make.
    Giving Bones to Your Dog
Bones are a good source of nutrients and chewing stimulates saliva enzymes, helps treat plaque buildup on teeth, and prevent gum disease in your dog. However, many vets believe it just isn’t worth the risk of serious injuries to give your dog a bone.
Bones can break and splinter into tiny, sharp pieces that can cut your dog’s mouth, throat or digestive organs.
    Hot summer walks
In hot summer days, the pavement is hot enough to cause burns, tissue damage, and potentially to scar your dog’s sensitive paws after just one minute of contact.
    Ingredients matter
Improper feeding can lead to obesity, malnutrition and many health issues. Always monitor the calories in your chosen pet food and adhere to the suggested serving sizes.
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, over 50% of dogs and cats in the US are obese or overweight.
    Neglecting breed-specific characteristics
Every dog breed has different needs. Climatic conditions, physical exercise, room or space availability, and grooming requirements are some of the things to be considered when caring for your dog.
And remember, before actually getting a dog, one should understand what breed suits your lifestyle best.
    Risking a Lost Dog
Many dogs are lost every day. Make sure to add an identification tag to your dog’s collar. And remember, microchipping makes it even easier to identify lost dogs whose tags or collars may have been cut off.
    Taking puppies to dog parks.
Taking young puppies to dog parks is a bad idea. First of all, young puppies don’t have all the vaccinations, which means they are susceptible to diseases and infections. Secondly, other dogs can be aggressive towards your puppy.
    Toxic Flea Repellents
Many of the pharmaceutical pest repellents are dangerous for animals. Make sure to use pest control sprays that are safe for pets and don’t contain toxic chemicals.
    Not adjusting their collar
Dogs grow and put on weight. It’s important to change the collar size from time to time.
    Early Exposure
Socializing a dog is one of the most important things a dog owner can do, especially with a puppy! The more people and animals that your pooch is exposed to early on in their life, the better. It helps to lessen fears and have a well-adjusted happy dog.
Thinking that all human food is good for dogs
Some pet owners think that dogs' instincts guide them about what food is safe for them. But this is not true. Many human foods, such as vegetables and fruits, can wreak havoc on a dog’s body, causing severe health problems.
Neglecting Their Dental Hygiene and Grooming
Like humans, dogs need regular dental care. Their teeth are often home to hundreds of bacteria and need to be brushed just like yours do.
Grooming helps maintain a healthy coat and prevents matting or skin diseases. And remember, regular nail trims help reinforce healthy posture and foot structure, and reduces the risk of infection.
If your dog gets sick and you don’t have any insurance, the costs are likely to be much higher than you anticipated. Make sure to get your pet insured before it is too late.
Dogs age quickly, sometimes 10 times faster than humans, and yearly exams can help to detect problems that can be treated early.
Not Offering Enough Exercise and Activity
Lack of exercise and activity can lead to behavioral issues and health problems. The more you play and exercise your pup, the less chewing, jumping and barking you will get. But remember, short-nosed breeds like pugs and bulldogs have respiratory issues and are not capable of running long distances.
Leaving dogs alone in the car
It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation. Dogs don’t sweat and have a hard time adjusting to heat than humans.
    Putting flowers on the table
Some plants or flowers are toxic to dogs. The most toxic plants are Ivy, lilies, chrysanthemums, tomato plants, and tulips.
    Using harsh cleaning products
Many cleaning products used in our homes are toxic to dogs.
Dogs lick their paws and ingest those toxins. Any product that contains bleach or ammonia is hazardous to animals.
Thinking they’ll grow out of it
Dogs do not grow out of a bad behavior. If you don’t stop unwanted behaviors, they will get worse.
    Using the Wrong Shampoo
Many dog shampoos that look natural often still contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Using a human shampoo on dogs can disrupt their skin composition, leaving your pup vulnerable to viruses, bacteria and parasites.
Not being on the Same Page
If you live with other people, make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to expectations and training of your dog. If your pup is not allowed on the couch, everyone should discourage him from doing so.
Not cleaning their feet after walks
A quick wipe of dog's paws is important to clean dirt, bacteria, skin irritants or harmful chemicals from the streets.

One summer day, i had my dog in the front car seat of my car for maybe about 7 min. All of the sudden he seemed thirsty, i tried to calm him down by putting my hand on his body, then somehow my hand touched the leather seat, and thats when i realized the seat was super hot and it was burning his little body. Always, check leather seats.

This can be easily overlooked by owners, heat prostration can be fatal to a dog causing organ failure and terrible death. People should never leave dogs in their car for extended period in moderate heat even with window open.

Two mistakes: dogs do sweat (but not as much as humans) and insurance does not save you money (how else would insurances make money). You only need to be willing to risk paying more as your dog gets older, but over its lifetime you are highly likely to save money without an insurance.

And remember, *NEVER* put your dog’s name on their tag. If they got stolen and taken to a dog park, a stranger might see the person with your dog but since the dog responds when someone calls their name, the stranger will think that the dognapper is the owner of your dog.

Chris I think the point is to get people to check the issues he gave. Shampoo; do you know how many different types of them there are? Too Many. But your dog, my dog, couldn't care less about shampoo, Well except to say NO SMELLY STUFF means no scent b/cuz it screws with their full time job of Scent Patrol❗really they don't like it, I'm pretty sure its why (my dog) they run around~if they have the chance to~ after bath then roll in the worst smelling pile of____ they can find. I know you might think this is TOO MUCH but you write down ingredients of foods or products, b/4 you buy, & look them up at the FDA, or a reputable place (a business wants to SELL & $$) I researched people food additives & I'll tell you it was worth my neck ache.
O yeah you may know that words on a label don't mean the same as the exact word in a dictionary❗TRUE. 😒 "Lowfat" "Diet" (anything) Actually it didn't have true definition in marketing 15yr ago when I was educating myself. Considering it can be a verb, a noun, an adjective & a swear in certain situations😊 A game for ✴ peoples that peddle their products to public✴
Sorry to run on so. Its worth the effort to investigate for your Pet & Yourself. {No report is expected
P.S. I used to give my dog "Bully Sticks" about 10 yrs ago. The real ones would last a very long time (now there's toi many imitators & ridiculous CO$T..
MY POINT: L👀K UP WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF... PKG SAYS= BEEF PIZZLE. OR PORK PIZZLE. you may?be surprised.

Same with pet's foods & the commercials, all geared to the money holder, people! My dog does not do vegetables...well unless they're loaded butter🐶. Its worth a look to know what the chemical is in the foods especially. Like by-products, some say its the liver & heart of animal. Well these meat factories don't waste any part of each animal. By-product can include blood, grizzle, etc. They work hard to make the label non offensive to people reading it. You could just google each ingredient.

The one about shampoos has been disproven. Theres so much overlap in shampoos that it makes no difference. Each dog has a different ph level to its skin and even on different parts of its body, theres no way to know which shampoo would suit what parts of your dog. Using human shampoo (higher acidity) is fine for a dog. Using dog shampoo (higher alkalinity) on a human would be fine unless theres skin sensitivity. Show dog handlers regularly use top quality human products on their dogs because they are better. Putting some Pantene on your dog will not harm his skin as long as he is healthy and has no preexisting skin issues.

I've never heard of anyone rubbing a pet's face in its feces - that's pretty disgusting! When I was a child my grandparents thought rubbing a dog's nose in its pee-stains was educational (for the dog, that is); I wouldn't do that either, but rubbing it in poo seems just plain whacko! And begs the question "and then what??"

Edit: yet I don’t really like my dog she isn’t taken care of by my mom that well like I said my mom isn’t a great pet owner. But really all I do to help is feed my dog maybe I should do like what my friend does walk his dog for 30 mins once a week maybe I should ask mom If I can do that for our dog, just to bond with her a bit because she kinda likes mom way more than anyone else she is afraid of my dad and that’s really it. I feel like she may die in the next few years she is 8 and we had here since she was very young. This video may help very well. I feel our dog should be in a different family one that takes care of her better but we could just ask a vet for help. Sorry for saying so much lol.

I'm not going to get into it because people who have no idea what they are talking about will jump in, but do a youtube search about raw bones/raw diet and you will find out. Short answer, NEVER give your dog a COOKED bone.

    • @Koale-Moesite

@@wilsonserv So cooked bones? Like from the bones of a roasted turkey or etc?

    • @wilsonserv
      @wilsonserv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Koale-Moesite Yes, do not give your pet any bones including roasted turkey etc. that have been cooked. Cooking changes a bones consistency to hard, brittle and unable to be digested. This leads to punctures, and expensive surgeries or death. Dogs have short straight digestive systems so they can eat a cooked bone and get away with it a few times, because it goes right through their system, but a cooked splinter turns the wrong way and life threatening trouble starts. don't risk it.

PLEASE, walk your dog every other day for at least 20 minutes out of the every other day. You cant assume dog is living healthy and happy just being stuck inside the house( not all day, but every day). They do have the most boring lives of any animals and not everyone seem to understand the need to take dog out for it gives them a part of purpose as dog go about sniffing, marking, ect all for being part of the pack or family. Just imagine if ya a dog and the owner is much like you of not walking dog . Please, every other day walking ya dog will keep it from dog forming bad habits and possible locked up anger issues.
