  • There is a big need for high school football but it I might not be why you think. As a former professional player Angus Reid shares why high school football might be more important that ever.
Angus Reid is somebody who found a way to make his dream a reality. He has just recently retired from professional football after playing 13 years for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. The Richmond Born native played in 200 professional games placing him in the top 5 all time for games played by a BC Lion. Throughout his career Angus has been a 3 time all star, 2 time Grey Cup Champion and 8 time team captain.
Over the years Angus has become much more than simply a football star but has become a true fixture in the community. Along with his new career as a commercial insurance broker with Reliance Insurance, Angus also writes a weekly newspaper column for the Vancouver Province, hosts a radio show on the team 1040 and is also the host of Global TV's "CrimeStoppers" and "The Monday Morning Blitz" show. He is also involved in many youth charities and tours BC schools speaking out on such issues as ‘Violence Against Women’, 'Bullying’, and the importance of health & fitness.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

in high school football i wasnt the strongest the fastest the most athletic but i had the hardest work ethic. the fact that i improved so much in my senior year and became one of the best players on the team made me feel great. the fact that i proved all these people on the team who used to made fun of me showed me the respect that i deserved. god i love football

There's something inherent in the game of football that really seems to develop character in young men a little differently from other sports. At least, that's what we found for our boys. They played soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball and football. But football emphasizes personal committment, perserverence, and selflessness a little differently than most other sports. It's been valuable for our boys.

I started playing football in high school, this message really resonated with me. I grew up playing hockey, and Mr. Reid is right when he says football is the greatest game to give structure. The 6:1 practice to play ratio is important. I met people I never would have met, and learned not to exclude people. Also love the empowerment aspects. Great speech.

Angus gives an excellent message on the benefits of high school football. He is funny, enthusiastic, informative and direct. I believe that every parent who has a son entering high school, and is uncertain about his playing football, should watch this video.

I was just another kid who got cut from the basketball team, labeled as an awkward kid and also hung around the wrong group of friends. After I was targeted by local gangs, I decided to come out for Football. Even though my career has not been as smooth as I thought it would be, I forever have to thank Coach Doty for giving me two years to play at Canby High School. If I would have never been encouraged to play, I would probably be in jail or dead by now..

Academics, of course, comes first. I agree with what he said, and I believe that sports are important for many youths. However, the coaches must have a heart for those players on their team! Winning is important, but showing genuine love, sowing positive affirmations and discerning how you can help those on your team (within your ability and regulation) is paramount!
I know a great coach, R.Warren, who makes a difference in the lives of young men... he's been doing it for years.
I salute all coaches who take an interest in helping kids, who are not their own.

As a high school center right now I agree with all of this. Though I am not very physically talented I have learned a ton from playing. There is nothing like putting in months of work and then finally getting onto the field.

I understand what you are saying and I don't play football right now but I wrestle. I felt like I was somebody after I started wrestling and joined my schools debate team. It's nice to be apart of something great. Right now I throw discus for track and plan to play football next year. GO SALEM ROCKS.

I'm so thankful to Keith Johnston for sharing this video with me. Mr. Reid brings a valuable, insightful argument to all those individuals who see athletics as a means of achieving the most powerful attributes of all: empowerment, confidence, and a sense of belonging. I found his approach engaging and genuine, and I deeply appreciate his insight about the scope of high school football's reach. We often speak of giving praise and rewarding progress, but the giving of an opportunity is far more impactful. Thank you for your insights, Mr. Reid. This made my day!

not exactly, soccer teaches you to fake injury in order to get a step up over someone else. He also says that football teams are very very large, while soccer isn't.
For hockey not everyone can play as paying to learn how to skate can be too costly for many families.
What other sport provides 88 opportunities for kids to get on the field?
Basketball coaches aren't going to go around to random kids and ask them to play for the team when you can only take 12 players total.
It was a great speech and it doesn't apply to every sport on earth. Looks like you might have watched only the first couple of minutes.

As a multi-sport athlete, no sport has changed me like Football has. I've played Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Handball, but none of them ever came close to the life changing qualities of Football. In a sport like Basketball you have select few kids pent up on their own egos that all think their the next Lebron (this is from my experience). In Football, you've got all kinds of people and nobody does it alone. Everybody is helping one another, and everybody had to go through the grind to get their, I would not be the person I am today were it not for Football.

I love football, played in HS, watch college and NFL games etc., but the research regarding the long term effects on the brain from repetitive sub-concussive hits has made me recommend other sports to my kids.

    • @joelshaffer1047
      @joelshaffer1047 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Much of the research on the long-term effects occurred before the huge emphasis on "Heads-Up football" that is being required in youth football and high school football, which is much much safer than football at the amateur level 20 years ago. Also, my son has played RB/LB for several years and never had a concussion or even a headache. My daughter played several years of youth and high school volleyball and got 2 concussions diving for the ball.
