Infact in initial days after independence in every field private players were missing. So, Govt.set up these factories to fill this vacuum.
Once Tata and other private companies started manufacturing watches, Govt.did not encourage HMT to continue in the market.
Same situation is happening in telecom sector.

My Dad gifted me a HMT Ashwin, when i passes by matric exam... it was a beautiful piece as far as design and looks where concerned... later I myself bought HMT Ajanta and Kohinoor... still have one.. the best mechanical wrist watches...
Your analysis on why HMT failed was spot on however in India we failed to appreciate that it was making a reasonably good product a mechanical time piece that can be treasured for a lifetime as against those battery run watches. People spend a fortune to buy swiss watches while a similar watch in India was available for a very affordable price. It still can be revived and a demand for affordable and reliable mechanical watches be created in India.

लगभग चालीस वर्ष पहले hmt sona नामक घड़ी खरीदने का सपना देखा था । उस समय इसकी कीमत लगभग तीन सौ रुपए थी । मेरी मासिक वेतन दो सौ तेहत्तर रुपये के आसपास था । बस यही सोचकर यह घड़ी नहीं खरीद पाया था । आज पेंशनर हो चुका हूँ तथा 40712 / - रुपये प्रति माह मिलता है , मगर hmt sona शायद नहीं मिलती है । घड़ी बाँधने का शौक भी खत्म हो गया है ।
मेरे पास hmt sona yellow dial bran new with bill and box है । 😊
The HMT employees are themselves responsible for this . I have first hand experience of the good services provided by the Jallahalli unit whose golden dial Citizen gents watch I purchased around 1964-65, for less than Rs.100/- used it for almost twenty years until I lost this in 1985. Then I purchased another set of HMT watch and needed to service this in a HMT service centre in Lucknow around 1990. The service centre staff was so crook and casual in its dealing that I restrained myself to visit them any further and discarded the watch . Later on I had to purchase another brand sheer out of frustration. Their is no doubt the employees were bribed by other companies to deeply hurt and destroy the HMT business.

Are you that much elder now to tell your experience as true ? I don't know about hmt. I have worn first watch casio(digital) , titan (quartz) only.
HMT was one of the best companies during its time in machine tools and watch making.
But the sad part is some top officials were corrupt. I heard they were buying cheap jewels for automatic watches( Mechanical watches) so the quality slowly went down.
All most all public sector companies went down from corrupt officials and labour union problems.....

No exactly not the reason. HMT market is taken by mostly Titan, Timex , other international fashion brands like Fossils, Tommy, Casio etc. HMT was great initially but it lacks innovation, design and craftsmanship.

Yes,I got HMT watch e alarm in my wedding and always feel proud but disappointed when It was closed. I had been Bangalore . Its factory was spread from Ganamaa circle to Jalahalli west Bangalore. Very good factory layout it was that time. Now land is purchased by Prrstige construction company and made multistorey building. Very disappointing when I visit that closed HMT area.

I have sold HMT watches for a region. Actually sales stopped in 2006. Key reasons of failure are:
A) Corruption at MD level.
B) No organization structure. Production people were looking after marketing. Zero marketing idea.
C) Location of factories - Bangalore, Ranikhet and Shrinagar. How can you get productivity in such remote places?
D) Low retail margins - Titan used to offer Upto 30% discount in festive season. HmT gross margin was 18% to distributors. Why will the retailer sale your product?

Sir I bought a HMT wrist watch in 1978 used it upto year 2000. It was a really good watch and very accurate in showing time. At that time person feel pride in tieing HMT watch. I feel bad HMT could not compete with other brands and lag behind with the passage of time.

Bhai Government companies always suffer loss or is systematically closed like Air India, BSNL and many others. Its not far away that one day HAL will also go in loss & Govt will go for its privatisation. BSNL - Reliance telecom, HAL - Reliance defence. Air India - Other private players. Govt companies is like apne baap ka kya jata hai attitude. I remember how rude were BSNL staffs now I see most of them have been forced for VRS. Jaisi karni vaisi bharni.

Dear I agree the reason you give but 1 reason I am not agree 1st HMT making mechanical watch so many other companies also make only mechanical watch like Rolex I use last 15 years Rolex watch but with time its value increases. HMT fails in market because government infrared. That's biggest reason of so many companies fail now in market. Not only government companies but private companies also.
Sir this person has not worked in govt office and does not know anything. Only those items which govt intends to improve are improved e.g army vehicles battle tanks and many others are made by govt employees.
One foremost important reason is that Govt officials who control HMT are got packed with the private companies operators I.e. Government Officials are paid by private operators to slow down it works as private companies like Tata's Titan have to be grown
