I just read the song lyrics at an open mic for poetry and at least three of us cried. It makes me laugh a little how I seem to magnetically find people to share this beautiful fragile humanity with even online.
This song has meant so much to me! As a bi woman who grew up deeply imbedded in the church, It took me so long to step out and into my own truth. And hearing this song, it felt like suddenly I wasn’t alone in that journey anymore. Thank you so much for creating such powerful music and helping me on a healing journey I didn’t realize I needed to go on! ❤
I knew I was bi in 1983. It has been a long time of struggle. Being dismissed by people who misunderstood when I said no because they thought bisexual meant open to all comers. I am bisexual but honestly when I can manage to stand spending an hour with another human being, their genitals don't really matter. What matters is their soul, their impetus, their ideas, their banter, their lips, their joy, and their taste in music.
I just have to say that even as a boring af straight whites girl this song still gets me every time I hear it. It’s just so powerful and beautiful. I think my favorite line is “someday you’ll learn to keep your own secrets” because I myself never could do that. I always felt I had to share every mistake and deep thought I had and would feel guilty otherwise. 😢

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and didn't have the words to describe what I know now that I always was: biromantic asexual. I just thought I was fucking weird and sinful and all the things a Christian teen in the 80s and 90s thought about themselves when they had crushes on people we "weren't supposed to." Thank you for giving voice to a younger generation to speak truth about who they are, and to learn to love who they are. You are a beautiful and precious voice, and I love you and what you're doing.
This made me sad because past me was practicing self hatred by pretending to be homophobic to my closeted self and happy because i always was happy for friends aho felt I was a person to come out to because it meant i was a safe place in a world full of harm and actual hated homophobic ppl
