That's my favorite line... "And she tastes like birthday cake and storytime and fall / but to her, I taste of nothing at all." Basically girls falling for straight girls in a nutshell. And the way she gets so soft and looks heartbroken when she sings that kills me every time.
But it's really similar to the original version, just higher quality. Like I think of all her songs she's remade in studio this one sounds closest to the original
Jake Surname less emotion? This version made me cry ten times harder than the original, if anything this one is more somber and has more longing in it. The original is a bit bubblier as if it’s a small little crush that won’t notice her. This song has matured sooooo much
Dodie is too underrated. Just look at this, no crazy set or over dramatic videos or effect, stripped back, simplified in a beautiful way. This is what pure music is, simplistically beautiful, no auto tune because she doesn’t need it. She’s come so far
I read j great guardian article analysing her music and I mean this is best way possible (cos she is only beginning her career), but they called her bland and said her personality makes up too much for forgettable music - I think the personality "dodie" makes up for suboptimal music
Severely UNDERRATED. I was reading her book in public and people kept asking me who the author was. And NO ONE KNEW WHO I WAS TALKING ABOUT. and i'm just like, "It's DODIE! How do you NOT know who she IS?"
I love this song so much, yet I feel that I like this version even more than the original if that's possible. The original one feels quieter, like a timid confession, as though she didn't know if she was allowed to be saying such things. This version feels more mature, as though she has already confronted her feelings about it, but there is still that desperation, a hint of longing for the girl she once loved. The girl who, in a way, she still loves.
Grace Gustafson it’s cheesy to say but stay strong! it’s disheartening to be within an institution that you’re supposed to believe in but doesn’t approve of who you are. But you’ll see the world is full of great people who will have your back in the most unlikely places - I found out about so many other lgbt classmates once I left catholic school. But of course my best advice is to not come out unless you are safe. :)
I'm so gay and emo this song has gotten me so far in life and accepting my sexuality, and I just want to say that I am incredibly happy to see her here. She deserves all the recognition she gets and I'm so excited to see her getting new fans.
I Love That Dodie doesn't give up on any of her old songs because she's making new ones. she doesn't change this song but Dodie just made it more professional. I love that so much about Dodie and is why she inspires me in life.
LYRICS - Am I allowed to look at her like that? Could it be wrong When she's just so nice to look at? And she smells like lemongrass and sleep She tastes like apple juice and peach Oh you would find her in a Polaroid picture And she means everything to me Oh I'd never tell No, I'd never say a word And oh it aches But it feels oddly good to hurt And she smells like lemongrass and sleep She tastes like apple juice and peach Oh you would find her in a Polaroid picture And she means everything to me Oh, oh Oh, oh And I'll be okay Admiring from afar 'Cause even when she's next to me We could not be more far apart And she tastes like birthday Cake and story time and fall But to her I taste of nothing at all And she smells like lemongrass and sleep She tastes like apple juice and peach Oh you would find her in a Polaroid picture And she means everything to me Yes, she means everything to me She means everything to me
Ok so I literally love the studio version and the live version, but her voice sounds more like wholesome and raw in the live and it’s such a beautiful sound. both versions are so lovely
i'm so ridiculously proud of dodie. i remember the days when she would sing her songs in her bedroom, she didn't even have a manager. and now she's blooming into the star she was always meant to be. shine brighter, love; we'll be here to support you all the way ❤️
I had to watch it twice cuz I spent the whole first time trying to figure out if that was Orla in the background instead of focusing on Dodie 😂. Dodie's vids introduced me to Orla. Quite different vibes in their artistry, but I honestly couldn't love either of them more.
I’ve listened to this song on repeat for months now because it reminds me of my best friend. She passed away in July and this song touches me deeply because in all truth I never admitted my feelings for her, not even to myself until it was too late. I miss her so much.
I just found out today, I hope you're in a better place now. She is really proud of you. Keep your head high, she wanted that for you. Be strong for her as you are her peace when she sees you happy and continuing her stories.
This is song was the air in my lungs when I was 14 and realizing I was in love with a girl... as a girl. This feels like an old friend and a familiar hug. I remember when I found this song, and when I really loved Dodie, she didnt have any way to download her music so I would illegally download all of them to my pc and donate to her patreon every month. I wanted to see her succeed so bad I’m glad she’s found her way!
I can't even... What I love about Dodie is she almost never tries to be loud when singing or use vocal acrobatics like a lot of artists. She's almost always soft spoken when she sings. She's not trying to show off. You can tell by the music she writes, her voice, and her face when singing that she's not really in this for fame or money. She's in it because she's a fan of music. The heartbroken way she looks at the camera... Ugh. I teared up. She's so beautiful, inside and out.
this was the song i discovered dodie with. a long, long time ago, i was a closeted 11 year old girl who felt so connected with this song. i really just feel so grateful for finding dodie. she helped me come out to my friends and evolved me into the girl i am today. the amount of nostalgia im getting from this is absolutely amazing.
I'm forever grateful that dodie wrote such a beautiful song.. two months ago i sang this to my crush. she was sitting so close to me, and listening. it didn't work out but it was such a beautiful night to me, and i'll never forget that.
I remember watching the original version of this with Dodie in her bedroom with those hand drawn notes and I remember Dodie saying this song wasn't good enough for an EP. I'm emotional x
This was my comfort song when I fell for my best friend even though she never thought of me in that way. Now hearing it again feels like I'm reunited with an old friend :)
For some reason this version feels so much deeper. Like she's speaking of a lost soul mate rather than a classmate she once had a crush on. She's sure and humble and I love it.
Many years ago I named my tumblr blog storytimeandfall after a little song I heard on TH-cam by chance. Now it’s on vevo live. I’m so proud of Dodie :’)
Wow, when she looked into the camera at 1:39, she looked into my soul and I just started crying. I love her so much and I’m so proud of how far she’s come
I used to listen to this song so much when I was figuring myself out, and now I come back and listen to it again, but more professionally done and to me all versions always make me melt.
okay so two things: - all of the eye contact when she was singing, ugh i cannot. it really hit me like jesus - the way it got dark at the end was actually beautiful as it seemed like everything was centering in her and i love it so mucb
As someone who doesn’t feel safe coming out yet, this song has meant so much to me for years. Hearing it done professionally brought me close to tears. I love this, and I’m so happy for Dodie. ❤️
2:57 I love this exact moment, it's very well shot & lit. Cause it's so dodie. At the big final of her song, so raw and honest and real and very very human. No crazy make up, perfect hair or allures. Just as humble as the words she's singing. It's such a gold moment.
When she turns and looks into the camera and says “and she means everything to me” it makes me fall more in love with her omg. She’s so perfect and her voice is absolutely lovely live💘
When dodie gives eye contact right at the end you can see the pain and hurt in her eyes. This song gives me goosebumps and every time dodie sings it you can feel and see the pain that she has been through! Love this song so much!
OK! Don't come for me but I did find the chorus of this song on TikTok and I just had to find the whole song and OMG this song is my new favorite it's the best.
the way she looks down when she’s done singing like she’s finally understanding the other girl’s feelings is just AH! damn, dodie is a great artist, and i’m so happy to see her here
How does it feel to know that no one will ever write something so heartbreakingly beautiful OH THAT PICKING PART TWORDS THE END GOOD LORD MY LITTLE GUITAR HEART IS BREAKING INTO A MILLION PIECES
I like the fact that, years later, this song still resonates with the same raw emotion. I went to Dodie's concert last week, and I'm so glad she never got rid of her old songs. She just took them as they were and carved them into something more elaborate, more professional as she grew musically. Yet, the simplicity and authenticity that had touched many of us in all of these songs, and this one in particular, is still there. I think there's actually something even more nostalgic in the new version. I felt really anxious to see "She" had made it to the tracklist for her EP... usually, when artists rework on old songs, it turns bad. But not this time. It's different, but it's a different good. The cello and violin definitely made this song more ethereal... I could rant about "She" for hours, really, but let's just stop on this: Dodie is one of these rare jewels in the musical industry. And I know I'm not the only one to see her like that... I mean, I'd never been to a concert where 100% of the crowd knew and sang along 100% of the lyrics in perfect harmony before :)
'to her, I taste of nothing at all' is still one of my favourite lines & deliveries of dodie's. such a great song still.
