    These are the strongest field SUV ever built . I used to drive one while on a United Nations mission in the Sahara desert , North Africa. Oh my u will love how it cruises in sand like it was born there. So powerful..built for work in any condition.

    • @mattvidler1404

      I agree. It performs great in sand.

      Wouldn't call it a SUV.
      Either a Wagon or a Van. (as well as troopy/troop carrier etc, etc.)

    Can't wait to see this custom build completed. I'm a Aussie living in California. What you pay is what you get, it may not have all the trendy bells and whistles like the 4x4 trucks here in the USA (disposable society) but its a fantastic, dependable platform ready to go with the proper driveline and chassis build that will go on forever and rarely let you down. It will hold its resale value and that'll put a smile on your face :). My dad in Sydney bought a 91 GXL Landcruiser (6cyl petrol) with low kms in 92. He sold it in 2011 for about 10K AUD just shy of 400,000 with the original motor, clutch and driveline. The only repairs it had was a new radiator, window regulator, radio antenna and replaced the shocks all round. We used it for camping throughout Oz, the Flinders Ranges, Gammon Ranges and Karting (Go Kart) racing in NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and TAS plus many trips on the beach to Fraser Island and Stockton Beach. Even in its old age the chassis and doors still felt solid and tight. So many great memories for the family thanks to our trusty Landcruiser :) Congrats Andrew all the best!

    Mate, ordered my 2021 78 series last year September. Finally get to pick it up in October. My opinion, they are simply built awesome. They are designed to go off road and last a very long time. Just simply easy to use.

    Ive got a 79 that's 9 months old and went camping in the sand on the weekend. Never got stuck once. Patrols were digging holes everywhere and trenches and getting stuck. I havent been getting rear axle widenings. They really are a great car. First thing I would do is get some decent wheels and wider tyres. That will improve ride and traction but also wont body roll as much. I love my ute

    Andrew congrats with your new car! That's my dream car! Some advise on fuel contamination prevention, I had similar issues with a hilux Double cab 1kd-ftv and what I got was a plastic inline diesel filter a friend of mine gave me from Italy. We fitted the filter just at the exit point of the fuel tank (before fuel gets to primary filter) and it worked wonders. That very light you were warned about hardly came on after that, meaning my primary filter was well protected and every 20,000km I changed the inline filter. Note on the hilux the pipes straight out of the tank are rubber. I am sure land cruiser is the same. Enjoy your car and cannot wait to see the end result!

    I will keep my 2002 defender TD5 thankyou, no flash and pop for me, the landy is still going strong at 15 years and will not be replaced in my lifetime. Maintenance is always ongoing as this year it has cost me $22.00 to replace the injector washers, something I wasn't expecting and of course a couple of oil and filter changes. At least I can do these repairs and service very easily myself, last year was expensive though as I had to replace the second set of original tyres but I could see that coming, next year will be some more oil changes and windscreen wipers I would guess but all well worth it to keep our icon and I enjoying the wide brown land together with my wife and caravan.

    It,s a shame that these are not available in Europe. I have a 78 with 1HZ engine. I bought it new in 2000 and now in 2021 i will get the same price i bought it for. If i would sell it......!!! Never of coarse. It has gone 260.000km now and the only thing i replaced are 2x the batteries, 1x exhaust, 1 pair of front brake pads, and one gasket in rear axle. THAT's IT! I'm aware, if i will sell this "best friend" than NOTHING can replace it.

    Without doubts that this is the best vehicle that can buy new in a stand! I'm sure Andrew will make a great vehicle, BUT, for me, with the money that this vehicle costs, I would buy a Land Rover to defend Perentie's ex-australia army and equip it with comfort, safety, etc. It would then make a small 5-star expedition vehicle.

    Round 2. The V8 is a great motor BUT, if you get fuel contamination and it damages your engine,,,its a $25k exercise, inc fuel pump and turbo!!! I loved the heater controls, back to basics. You want to know where your money went, look underneath., absolutely solid. Good luck with the exhaust,.The DPF only allows you from the DPF back. No gains, just a bit better tone. Not worth the cost. Just sold mine. Nearly got all my money back from new,,,, great re-sale value. Enjoy your build. More suited to your needs.

    Ten to twenty years to come the 79 series is going to be the classic off road symbol like the landrover series I & II..
    So I agree with the land cruiser not to change anything on the look of the car, for me updating only the engine is enough. ..
    If anyone want confortability and luxury go for land cruiser 200 series or prado. .. Just leave the 79 series alone to remain classic...

    I'm tossing up between a 76 wagon or a Disco 4, However each time I look at the interior of the 76 I cant help but think "Hmm, I'm paying $75,000 for this"

    • @Davidrobertwhittaker
      @Davidrobertwhittaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dash Cam Owners Australia Disco 4, I think, will go down as the best vehicle Land Rover ever made. The only vehicle which regularly turns my head away from defender ownership. Just needs some good wheels/tyres and you're good!

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Two entirely different vehicles. One is a comfortable SUV, the other is an off-roader, overlanding truck. Expect 100K in the LR and then huge repair bills to keep it running if you use it for overland touring. LR4 was not even on my radar, and I had one for a year back in 2012. I loved it, but its not an overlander, and can not be converted to be one. IMHO.

    • @DashCamOwnersAustralia
      @DashCamOwnersAustralia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the llams lift kit and decent rubber it will do what I want it to. I would get one with the factory rear locker anyway. I have been happy with the capability of my Disco 2 just want something more modern.

    • @Davidrobertwhittaker
      @Davidrobertwhittaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4xOverland yep it's not an out and out overlander, but as an all-in-one 4x4 to tackle whatever life throws your way it's incredible. Very different target and execution to the 70 series though. The 200 series is probably its closest rival

    • @DashCamOwnersAustralia
      @DashCamOwnersAustralia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I was purchasing to fulfil a single role (Overlanding, 4X4ing) I would pick the 76 but seeing as it also needs to be a daily driver around Sydney I have to make some compromises. It is still proving to be a difficult choice.

  • @NK-dl2nc
    @NK-dl2nc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hugely expensive for what it is agreed. The way I see it is, in this world of over spec'd vehicles, you now have to pay a premium for simplicity. For an overlander build, you do not need all the bells and whistles with chinchilla leather trim as you will chuck most of it away. I wish we could get the Jeep J8 in civvy street. Dana 60 rear axle on leaves. 2 door long wheelbase. Much greater payload. Perfect base for a rugged no frills overlander in my opinion. So, great choice Andrew. Don't worry about what it cost as you know it will pay you back in the long term. Leave the leather clad gin palaces for the school run.

    I loved the green one you built! Great to see you in another Troopy. But holy cow! That thing costs way too much money for what you get. And to have the wheel track problem on top of it! I'm surprised a company like Toyota let that go. A wider diff and some rear fender flares and problem solved!

    Enjoy the build Andrew, I can't wait to see the vids. I have to agree the price is outrageous and the narrow rear axle is shocking from a manufacturer like Toyota, but I'd have to say that they have the concept right, strong, reliable, simple and powerful. My D3/LR3 only has 2 of these and my Defender the other 2 😂.

  • @moabman6803
    @moabman6803 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Narrower rear axle improves change of direction when steering. Not extremely noticeable but that's the reason AFAIK, Some simple wheel spacers in the back would make the front even with the rear if u need the width to be the same.

    And lets not forget it's the favoured gunship of Isis. They are a great truck, but truck being the operative word. I almost bought one very recently but it's just too truck like, particularly driving within the suburbs and impossible to park at shopping centres or underground carparks. I think for my requirements a TD 200 series GX is better value for money and doesn't have the odd wheel track and slightly more powerful to tow my 3.5 tonne boat. Enjoyed the video and looking forward to the transformation.

    4xOverland your comments @3.20 about coil sprung Defenders being driven too fast is exactly what happened when the first Toyota 80 Series wagons came out, fully coil sprung, with the new uprated HZ diesel engine. Our bosses on the DBNGP gas pipeline were the only ones that had them and straight away they had some nasty rollovers on the dirt roads in the west Murchison & west Gascoyne. Inexperienced dirt road drivers, driving too fast, & over she goes.

    Hi Andrew, why weren't you able to import your previous Troopy to Australia?
    As far as I know, residents are allowed to privately import their vehicles provided you can prove you owned it for more than a year and it's right hand drive.
    Any mods to make it ADR compliant wouldn't have been impossible because you could get them retrofitted locally.
    All the best for the build

    Driven the 79 series single cab (yet to drive a troopy tho) with all three diesel options now, and by far my favourite is the factory turbo six...experienced the wheeltrack issue driving the V8 in muddy ruts, but thought it was otherwise pretty decent to drive on unsealed roads...

    Bought a 20 year old troopy, with 600.000k, apart from feeling like your on a trampoline on really rough roads, sold it for what I bought it for 4 years later, now have a 76 series v8 Turbo. Hard to go to anything else after owning one.

    Congratulations on your new travel companion! I wish we could buy those in the US $55,000 is steep but I'm pretty sure they would sell like crazy to guys like me. Looking forward to your build and your adventures. Cheers from Atlanta, Georgia. Hope to see you at adventure overland east some day.

    my 2000 tacoma came with slides for climate control, superbly reliable. my 02 4runner has electronic dials that control a motor. not so reliable. from time to time it feels like blowing hot then I have to re-turn the dial around and back to cold setting. slides for sure.

    I know you're a new car kind of guy Andrew but we bought a 1HZ 78 for AUD $22000 with a lift up roof and 190000k on the clock and it's AWESOME! I wouldn't be as happy if had spent 78 thou just to get 2 airbags and a fussy engine...

      Outback UAV agreed. How ever don't forget that thanks to people (like Andrew) who love their cars and can spend and want to spend their money on a brand new fully loaded car. You and me can buy one after a couple of years for a fraction of the cost and with extra's.

    putting in a larger aftermarket diesel water separator would be a must for me in any diesel truck (UTE).

    I think, here in France, the last year where it was officially possible to get a Troop Carrier was 2001 .... Then came the parallel markets where, for some years, it was still possible to get a 78 or a 105, but prices were insane (say 50K€ + VAT for the 1HZ)
    So, consider yourself very lucky to still be able to get one of these brilliant vehicles -- Indeed I am sure you do :-) ; . They are amazing trucks. Would also be my choice if available down here!
    The only cruiser we can buy here these days is the Prado 150 -- even the 200 is out of the game, not meeting Euro6 specs ; That's what I have ; A Euro5 spec without the AdBlue crap ; Pretty good and confortable machine, but not as tough as the 70 series. Anyway, I guess I love my 150 as much as you do with your 78 :-) It gets me into lots of places out in the wild, never lets me down, and always takes me back home.
    Thanks for your videos and your work ; Been watching all of them ; Inspiration for me.
    Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year and keep up the good work.
    Fred

    The Tahoe/Suburban has 7 Airbags, aluminum wheels, cloth or leather seats, more modern, 20 and 22 inch wheels as options, etc. I have to wait 25 yrs. to get one of these through imports unless converted.

    The good thing about the landcruiser is how bullet proof it is. It doesn't have all the silly gadgets and computers like the navaras and colorados have that fail in harsh conditions. That's why mining put in huge orders for these vehicles because of they're reliability. And regarding engine reliability that's because these things are common rail high pressure injection systems that require a secondary fuel filter to make sure bad diesel fuel or water won't get through.
